Fair enough.

James Hird shouldn't walk out and pay the umpires on the ground, he should do it in a more secret location.

ahhh rivers? was i the only one who thought him along grimes were our best?

Yeah, Rivers, Grimes, Maric and Jurrah were in our best, IMO.

We have some serious liabilities with ball in hand in our backline.

Oops, forgot Strauss in my best. ;)

Well, maybe not best, but I thought he was impressive.

Martin, Warnock, Strauss, Jones and a couple of others are complete dead wood and I hope none of these blokes get seen in the red and blue this year.

Watts must have read his article 5 mins before the game as he was back to his 2009 perform. I can't believe people actually think we'll play finals.

Not having a crack at Grimes, but isn't it typical that as soon as the club mentions the word finals we go to compete water. Happened in 2007, late last year when people were talking us up and again tonight.

Crap effort 2nite and more work ahead than first thought.

Thank god this game will mean nothing come tomorrow morning.

Vent over!

I've given up on Bate. He's just not good enough. Hopefully another team will have a brain fart and trade for him. Warnock is just depth. Won't hear a bad word against Rivers no matter what. :P

My biggest fears about our team were on show tonight.

We don't win enough clean ball from clearances.

We have some serious liabilities with ball in hand in our backline.

We are not as good as what we are pumped up to be.

We dont win enoough clean ball because moloney and Jones arnet quick enough they always get caught even though they can win the ball they lack smarts.

Losing Junior and Bruce has only dropped our skill level.

Untill we get games into Gysberts,Blease,Tapscott Scully, and they take over the midfield ,we wont make the eight with Moloney and Jones in the middle.

Warnock and Macdonald were terrible down back too so we miss Frawley.

Positives were Maric,Trengove, Jurrah.

Most dissapointing were Jamar, Sylvia,Green,Davey.

Thought Dunn, Jurrah, Maric and Grimes were our best. Too many fundamental errors at the back (eg. Bouncing one too many times, ignoring open men etc.) which ultimately cost us. Essendon were simply too good tonight.

Although they weren't the reason for the loss, the standard of umpiring was terrible. The deliberate put of bounds and goal umpire standing on the post the two obvious ones. If that goal umpire was doing his job and standing behind the posts, the ball canons straight into the post for a behind, not a goal.

I thought he was okay - definitely not our worst. Not sure why people are so upset over Bate's game either. We lost the game in the midfield and their forward line put on some really impressive pressure. As per usual when we lose like that our senior players were all junk - Green, Jamar, Davey and Moloney all had poor games.

Very pleased with the game of Maric. His career is on the line this year and he has stepped up so far. Grimes was excellent.

All in all it was disappointing to lose and there were some extremely frustrating moments, especially when we'd just give it away every time we looked like gaining some momentum. When looking at the big picture though, I didn't hate that performance. Can't wait for round 1.

Jones dead wood????? He was one of our best and most consistent performers last year, was promoted to the leadership group on the back of that, was coming back tonight after a very serious back injury in the final round... a bit harsh I would think!! Then again, you have written off our season already, so no surprises there I suppose.

I thought Rivers, Grimes, Maric were all good and Bennell started to show a bit in the second half. There were a lot who were off the boil tonight, but it's hardly worth fretting over.

I'd say these guys are waiting for round 1. It's the only logical reason I have.

And another whinge from me - surely something has to be done about the jumpers. That was a joke how similar they were tonight, honestly. One rule for all AFL, not just some!

The thing for me is that the club came out and said we were serious and wanted to win it.

The bombers had a half strength side in, and we picked our best available.

The beat us comprehensively and we looked like weve gone backwards.

We looked slow, and very poorly skilled in execution and decision making.

Why on earth do we turn back into traffic when we are clear and should just kick the thing, only to get caught and turn it over.

I fear the worst for this year and say we will not make the eight, and that teams like Carlton and Essendon will finish ahead of us easily.

A long long way to go yet.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
