Great article, and this very interesting tidbit.

"Liam has had his situation, but Aussie had just as big a trauma to deal with," says Flack. "And then Aussie had Maurice's [Rioli's] funeral as well. He's Maurice's brother."

I have suspected this for a while but the club wanted to keep it quiet, obviously with the passing of the great man things have changed.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but does this mean his "brother" in the biological sense or in terms of the fact that the families come from a close knit community with a strong feeling of kinship for each other?

Shortly after Aussie was drafted I remember reading an article about Maurice Rioli. I have searched everywhere for the article but can't find it.

The article was talking about the Rioli clan and how there was a player that was recently drafted that had a close connection to Maurice that wasn't Cyril. The article went on to say that the player was a half brother to Maurice and that the club knew of the connection but was trying to keep it quiet. Maurice was quoted talking about how the player had many of the Rioli family traits but the player wasn't named.

I did a bit of investigation and came to my own conclusions.

Fantastic article about a young man on incredible journey. We are so lucky that he plays for Melbourne, and the good fortune clearly cuts both ways.

I firmly believe that the MFC has not only risen from its ashes to become a Football Club and Team of interest but its becoming a Pillar within the sport.

This has everything to do with the personal character and morals of the likes of Stynes, Schwab through Bailey etc. They have created an environment that attracts young men of similar traits ... young men who share not only the passion of football but a code by which to live life.

Liam does seem however to take it to an even loftier height. They'll make a film about this bloke one day.

I can't remember when a player has had quite such an impact. He's piqued the interest of people far beyond the immediate football audience.

certainly no-one who has played just 17 games has had so much press

Mark Stevens on said on MMM last friday night that he's probably the #2 star attraction in the league at the moment, behind franklin - the kind of player everyone wants to watch

can't wait to see him in action this year, definitely the most exciting player we've had at the club since schwarz '94

We have an idea of what brilliance Buddy can bring to the game. As to Jurrah I'm pretty sure 'we ain't seen nuttin' yet' !!! :)

His life borders on the surreal balancing what are two extremes of the Australian existence. To keep your head

not only focussed and in perspective to those such differing pressures and demands but to actually make a fist of not one but both is nothing short of extraordinary !!

They need to clone his blood and bottle it for the rest of us mortals.

Having said that .... Do something with that hair !!! ;)

franklin dates a socialite and comes from perth. hasn't got much of a personality. comes across as arrogant. But he is a bloody good footballer!

LJ has come from nowhere! go google map "Yuendumu"...it's in the middle of Australia. The guy has has a story and can play.

People on here a smart enough to see that the comparisions between franklin and LJ are wrong. only comparision is they are exciting footballers

just saying the comparision is wrong because of the journey/path they have taken to become AFL footballers.

?

That's not the comparison though, so the comparison can't be wrong.

It's purely based on being an exciting player that people want to come and watch, regardless of the reasons why.

[Fair dinkum, articles like this should make us all Proud To Be A Demon.

For me the best line in it is from Brett Badger:"The Demons have been absolutely fantastic for, and with, him."

It speaks to the sincerity of the club in building a relationship with Liam and his people. Wonderful stuff

And Nathan Jones has gone up in my estimation - his piece about the effect on him of attending Matthew Wonaemirri's funeral shows him in a very mature and sensitive light.

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
