THE TOM SCULLY TO GWS THREAD

Featured Replies

I have another slant on this situation. WHAT IF Sheedy, who we overlooked, knew that it was unlikely that he could get Scully, so puts the story around that they are offering Scully $6m over 6 years to cause the Dees grief. We have this uncertainty and a higher contract price to sign Scully. Nice bit of revenge for knocking back Sheeds.

It also draws other managers out to test the waters and hides some of the real targets GWS are after.

Of course I could be wrong.

Strong possibility that GWS are feeding misinformation, though I would expect that revenge would not be so much of a motivation.

That is why as supporters speculation is futile and only serves to meet the motives of the rumour.

So this will be my last post on the matter and wll enjoy watching Scully play this season without any fear tarnishing my view.

This just keeps going and going. Just now Drain Russell announced that David King had said that Tom had signed along with four other players. Gerard Healey did not dismiss it and said that what was looking to be a promising year for the Demons suddenly if Tom had signed, looked likely to be problematic year instead. Did anyone else hear this.

If Drain Russell said that, I feel much better now.  When was the last time the "pipe"got anything right?

<div><br></div><div>edit: the fact that this issue has been raised by the popular media.........AGAIN.........means Melbourne Members should say nothing........doesn't it?</div>

I think Gerard agreed with him that David King did say it. I am not sure how reliable David King is with his information. Maybe he read Wolfmother as well ;)

I have no idea if TS has signed, is about to sign or has not made up his mind.

But one thing is certain whichever way it goes in 2011 there are going to be some people with egg on their faces.

If the above is untrue there goes omlete head King.

If it is true a few around the Dees will look silly if we play him all year only to discover he signed up before 2011 started.

As well as his manager who I believe has said nothing has been discussed.

The History of this will be very interesting.

On topic, logic tells me there is no way Scully would sign a contract with gws after only 1 year of afl. He would know that he's got a decade or more worth of huge contracts, n Melbourne would certainly compensate Scully with a super lucrative long term deal. Melbourne r on the verge of something special, why would he go live in western Sydney?

HOWEVER, what really worries me is the consistent rumours that he's signed with gws. Last year the huge majority of players that were spoken about consistently as leaving turned out to be going to gc. Some say that Where there's smoke there's fire, I'm hoping that is not the case here. Losing scaly would be a stab through the heart n really affect our ability to be the 'team of the decade'.

Some say that Where there's smoke there's fire

Indeed some do - some have even concluded that Scully is gone based solely on this! But it was only six months ago that there was so much smoke around "Petterd to Gold Coast" that every MFCSS suffering supporter on here was choking on it - alas, no fire.

The main thing I'm worried about is that if Scully has a fantastic season this year, I'm not going to have anyone to share it with because so many on Demonland will be too busy pooing their pants about him leaving.

I have 2 issues with this.

The rumours are that he has been OFFERED an obscene contract.

And they are not consistent rumours - just the one being repeated over and over, mostly by those that would never have a chance of knowing.

It makes no sense for GWS to put all their $$$ into the one basket of a player who has not yet hit the bigtime. And it makes no sense for a player so early in his career to jump ship, although Nathan Buckley may be a comparable example. I can only think of the motive of malice by one certain disgruntled would-be coach of our club. What if MFC had a huge breakout year this year, for example - like 1987, like 1998, like 2000 - and Scully was to walk out on this story. I, for one believe that this breakout is just about to happen.

Out of all things Scully/GWS, this is probably the scenario which I would think is completely unacceptable if it eventuated.

aaron davey should have a talk to scully.. didn't he turn down like 2m offer from freo for 3 years.

I don't believe he will go but in the unfortunate situation that he does go and the club knows he is going do you keep playing him?

The club is still about development, if a player has decided to leave the club we are better of developing other players.

What, we will look stupid if we play him all year to discover he he already signed with GWS?

This thread is ridiculous. Did Rischitelli play doggo this year because he had signed this year for GC17?? No, he won their B&F.

Did Gary Ablett play doggo? No, had a great year (didn't win their B&F because their cowardly and hypocritical coach had a personal spat with him)

Scully will wait until the $1Billion TV rights deal is complete before negotiating as it is fait accompi that salaries will be skyrocketing. His worth at the end of this year will be a significant multiple of what he could sign for now.

His management is doing the right thing by Tom. Now, relax. I don't think I can bear 27 more weeks of this thread!!!!!!!!

Or sending passive aggressive letters to the kid 'explaining' what a [censored] he would be if he left.

I've changed my mind on that - please don't send letters if you are older than Tom.

If you are older than Tom; just calm down, leave your hand-wringing tripe on here and don't send a 'please stay or else' letter.

I'd like to see no more comment on this matter- just shows how bored are we. Whatever happens will happen. If he goes, or Grimes goes or whomever goes will just create more opportnities for others and we will gain further quality picks. RIP till end of season-I say.And let the team play on their merits for this season.Mods close the thread.

Posters need to decide for themselves that continually talking about this is pointless and unhelpful - not the mods.

And Tom Scully is a great talent - I don't endorse your extremely opposite view of being so blase about the prospect of him leaving.

It's healthier than the hand-wringing but it's bordering on an enforced delusion to help people 'get over' Tom leaving if he ever does.

Let's be honest though. He looks at this stage to be a generational talent.

maybe you should have transposed the first and second sentences? ;-)

Anyway, if Scully is going to go, I have to admit that I would rather see him go to somewhere like GWS where he will have little impact on the competition for a few years (I believe we have the depth to cover his potential loss)... and that is probably one of the reasons I believe he will not be going anywhere, his chances of footballing success and the opportunity to increase his value are far greater where he is now; in four years time, $6mil will seem like small change.

I don't want to fuel this thread any further but like Bruce (very well documented by WJ in his AGM Report) basically was thought on by Bails and the football department- we want you to stay and I did/do hope Bruce stayed and Scully stays, however if you don't here is the door. Thanks for your effort and all the best for your future.Sometimes the club has to ruthless, to set the parameters for the club. I surely hope Scully stays, but if not, he moves on and so do we.As stated we will be very valuably gain good selections for him.And like Cam (whom I thought highly of and never ever thought he'd go)-the club is much bigger than any individual..and as at the AGM it was stated by many,Jimma, Bails and Cam that it is not a them and us approach ,it is not any individual or section..it is one- The Club..

Bruce is 31.

Tom is 19.

If the club thinks they can get all these top kids and not, at some stage, pay over market for them - they are kidding themselves.

We will pay over market for Tom and that is fine. We will probably pay undermarket for Frawley during the latter years of his 4 year contract...

The club is made up of individuals we have to pay under the cap, and the environment this year is conducive to Tom getting a contract over market.

Let's be ruthless and fight to keep a generational talent.

Precisely!!!

My concern about all the media conjecture is that a 19 year old kid does not need the added pressure. You don't have to be an Oxford Scholar to work out the banter which would go on in the change rooms, between team mates, over such conjecture. The team is bigger than the individual and that is why a team does not need such distractions.

If Sculls player manager truly had his welfare at heart, he would realise the same thing and that TS will have plenty of time to sign new and lucrative deals, as he rises up the ranks.

His manager is trying to get him a good deal. That's fine.

Tom seems to be professional enough to deal with distractions, the club won't talk about it so the fuel will be us and the Hun et al.

It isn't ideal but it is hardly the ruination of the season.

I am not worried about him leaving and I am not worried about the 'distractions' of endless questions from Hutchison, I want to keep him and I would pay over the odds for him, but I am just not interested in trudging around discussing the rumours.

He plays for Melbourne, why would he leave?

A few here could use some confidence as a Melbourne supporter, but I understand the need to to say 'the world is falling apart' - it is a defence mechanism so that they can say 'I saw this coming' or be pleasantly suprised when their vision of apocolypse is only a mere ELE.

Maybe this will add some perspective:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/107423/default.aspx

It's not only the fans who have twigged to this either. The media know such sites are a fertile source of news, so scour them for tasty morsels. This means a rumour on BigFooty can potentially find a large audience very quickly.

Post something on BF and it will be in the media before you know it. The club can't deny it (the Scully rumour) because he hasn't resigned, GWS will be enjoying the confusion and the media will run with it for lack of other news.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
