Spot on Garry. Not every player is expected to throw themselves into dangerous situations; but the captain is. Having a captain who sets an example by fearless attack on the ball is essential. Davey, as important a player as he is, simply does not do this. Nor do I particularly want him to. I remember once against Brisbane at the 'G Davey stuck one arm out going backwards into a marking content, avoided body contact, but controlled the ball in front of him when he landed, swooped on it and kicked a goal. Beauty. We get a goal and he remains uninjured. I'd expect the captain though to go back full bore and take the mark with both hands, getting crunched if necessary. Junior would do this. Nietz would do this. Lyon would do this. Green will do this.

Agree with all G. Lyon said there. The day Brad Broke his jaw in 2009 against Richmond was the day he got the Captaincy for mine.

This was one of the few Games of that Hideous time in History that we HAD to win, and were expected to do so, & Brad put himself on the line for it.

Brad Green will be a Fine Captain. He will teach and back his deputies at the same time.

Don't really see that as interesting. Of course Grimes is no certainty because it's footy and their are 1000 variables. There are so many possibilities that could stop Grimes being captain but overall I'd say the main threat to Grimes being the next captain is Tom Scully, who on training work rate alone would have to be considered for the leadership group in the next couple of years.

Finally. Someone with credibility says it. The "grimes for captain in 2011" movement is completely fan and forum driven. He's certainly a leader and a credit to the team and recruiting staff, but fair go... If they selected him now, it would have been a colossal error. And saying any captaincy is certain is absurd.

I think quite a large percentage in fact went for Green to be Captain. Even in both forums. Hardly a "movement" for Grimes to be Captain in 2011.

Maybe. I think/heard the filth offered him a lucrative deal; if he had gone, he may well be a premiership player now.

That said, I'm very pleased he stayed and that he is now captain.

exactly what I was going to say, plus Trengove and Watts would have to be huge contenders also, all four of these kids were talked up as potential leaders at the time of their drafting. In about 3 years when Green gives up the ghost it will be an extremely interesting appointment.. if I had to bet I would say Scully will be the one

It's just that unlike Scully/Grimes/Trengove he wasn't a leader as a junior, and you never seem to hear him mentioned in that breath by anyone at the club. Some blokes are just guns and aren't meant to be leaders, like Sylvia

I think he could be somewhere in the frame by then. No disrespect to Nathan Jones, he's a tireless worker, but I would have thought (being not from the inner sanctum - but from the outside) someone like Frawley who leads by example - tenfold - and has real presence (ref: 2010 season), might snaffle a position within the leadership group along with Grimes as 'the youngsters'. Granted, there remains a few years to go whilst Green is captain - one would assume - so Chip definitely has enough time to make inroads, if he so desires. But I do agree, he has many good attributes.

With anything these days with leadership groups, the players tend to vote them in, so it's moreso the inner sanctum that really 'knows'.....and help determine the leadership group...as is this case.
