Jordie was given No 13 as a reward for loyalty. I don't think he'll be changing to 7.

Great comment- accept your point of view.

I think this thread is really about Jamie Bennell, rather than the number he may wear next year (or, for that matter, the entire history of number 7s).

Hence, not so much 'sweating the small stuff' as perhaps just completely missing the point ...

This just tweeted by Chunk:

"Smashed weights with my boy JB (Jamie Bennell) he's getting strong the kid!!"

Owen was supposed to be the next Ron Barassi, as a ruck rover and was just a dud.

Spot on durango. He arrived at Melbourne with a great fanfare, and unfortunately, never came close to meeting expectations. I saw him most weeks during his short career, running around in the ressies, and not even setting them alight at that level. Kinda like an early version of 'Diamond Jim' Tillbrook, but without the dollars (sorry pounds back then), and quite the same level of hype.

I wonder if Owen Zinko can be on hand to present Jamie with his upgraded number?

Maybe we should start a campaign (someone can tweet Cam Schwab) to get #getowentopresentJamietheseven. Surely its better than the #gettheashestotheashes

Aah, the mysterious Zinko! I acquired an MFC 1963 Souveneir album in my trails a few months back with a bio on each player going into the 1963 season, and he was one that caught my eye, not only because of historical anonymity but also his great name!

Behold (I hope the link works ok!):

OwenZinko2.jpg

I also remember I looked him up in the demons enyclopaedia of players and he did managed to player at least one game in his time at the club

What is even better, is this bloke is a Gippslander!!!!

I believe the correlation with the #7 and Jamie Bennell might go back a little further than the 1960s.

Only one Indigenous Australian has represented Melbourne in a premiership team and that was the great Eddie Jackson who played in our 1948 premiership. Given that the club is looking to honour it's rich heritage of the past, I couldn't agree more with giving Jamie Bennell Eddie Jackson's #7 guernsey.

Sadly, Eddie has passed on but I think it would be great if one or all of Eddie's daughters were to present Jamie with what would truly be a prize. And perhaps it might not be too fanciful to think that once the number has been given back into Aboriginal hands that a premiership is not too far off for long suffering Demon fans like yours truly. :)

Schwabby mentioning four club legends' numbers, who have been passed on to Jack Watts, Jack Trengove, Tom Scully and another player.

The other player (whoever that may be - Jake?) surely will be wearing Jimmy's #11 after tomorrow.

Yeah, Schwab on twitter has given clues and the number he's hinting at is 21.

But I don't think it's for Bennell, I'd say it's Lucas Cook.

From what I've been told, Benny is locked in at number 7, just as this thread suggests.

Don Cordner's number and worn by Febey S in 88 and 00.

If we don't hand out the #11 tomorrow would that suggest we're thinking of picking up PJ in the RD?

Confirmed.

Jamie Bennell for # 7 and Lucas Cook will wear # 21.

Not sure if this makes any difference, but Schwab tweeted this morning: "The enigmatic player I was referring to was the former owner of #24".

I hadn't appreciated that connection with our great heritage. I love it!

Thanks for that WJ. I was unaware of that. I love the whole story of 1948's flag. We should never have won it, but we did in the end easily.

The Eddie Jackson Family need to be remembered...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
