cam bruce or green will be the next melbourne captain.

bruce has the game structure to be the next melbourne captain...he reads the play well and uses the football well. He has played many games. already vc.

Green is my next choice...he's doing a lot of media these days and having a cracking season. except his kicking has been down on previous years or is he just having more shots at goal?

I must say i was wrong about junior being a good captain...he did a great job. he has def got the fire started at melb!

i reckon Beemer or Davey will get it.

The next skipper they appoint will be a more long term one i thing, so that would rule out Green and Bruce who probably have 2-3 years left before they get shafted like the rest of the guys fron the Daniher era!?

Not sure if this has been explained elsewhere, but how does the captaincy selection process actually work?

Transparent player vote.

They elect a leadership group and then vote again on a captain from within that group.

No input from Board, Coach or Executive and rightfully so. The Captain isn't leading any of those people, he is leading the players.

It is for this reason that I would suggest Cam Bruce is a very good chance considering he's been voted as Vice Captain the last several years.

Personally, I'd like it to be Green or Moloney.

There's been no indication at any time whatsoever that Frawley is a leader around the Club. I can't imagine that someone who the playing group didn't consider to be part of their leadership group this year would suddenly be considered their captain next year.

Fans are often too easily convinced that a good player is the same as a good leader.

I think it's more a result of fans' desperation to stake their claim on the new "Carey" type who captains their club from a young age and is a champion.

This is caused by confusion of causality.

Carey wasn't a champion because he was made captain at a young age.

Carey was made captain at a young age because he was already a champion and clearly his club's best leader at that stage.

I think some delude themselves into thinking that forcing a promising kid into the captaincy will somehow springboard them onto a new level of excellence.

I agree.

Thought the same about Neita myself, with him being stuck at FF.

Ideally the captain would be a mid so he can get around the ground.

That's my take.

This thinking definitely has merit, although BG generally moves around more than Neita did during his captaincy. Whether it will stay that way probably opens up a forward line discussion.

Edit: wouldn't it be nice to have 3 greens!

How's Jonathan Brown as a captain?

Craig Bolton?

Having a leadership group allows for there to be leaders all over the ground at any given time, making this point redundant.

I think Aaron Davey would be a good captain and would enhance his position as a role model for indigenous Australians.

IMO, Davey will continue to be the main media 'face' of the club (see the 2010 season preview magazine, the emblem video, etc.), with (Green, Moloney, Rivers......) as captain.

Yes, it is a hunch I have, nothing more. I have stated before that I think Green should get the captaincy, but that might not necessarily be the case. I've heard Bailey and Connolly now talk of the leadership (captaincy) may go to someone around the 24-25 year age mark. Davey also fits this criteria.

I think many underestimate Rivers.

A bit of nostalgia

Darrel Baldock played 3 seasons with East Devonport in the NWFU (senior footy in TAS) and then accepted the position of Captain/Coach at Latrobe (another NWFU side). He was still a teenager!
