I'll happily go on record and say this has been a welcome return to great form for Bruce. I still have issue with his disposals but by and large a very good contributing year. Now speaking of contributing the club has lined his pockets rather handsomely for a few years now, even dare I suggest when it wasn't overly earnt . With Junior goingit might be wise to retain him for a year or two (2nd year no guaranteed starts ... Maybe not even first ) but he needs to understand a little bit of payback is needed via a salary cut. That seems fair enough; otherwise enjoy the Sun by all means!

1Yr, 'belzebub59', or I'll buy him some Suntan lotion.

I wouldve thought, with Bruce able to be slotted onto the veterans list this year in place of McDonald, that a pay cut wouldnt be necessary, as we could simply continue to pay him the same amount, but half of it is now exempt from the salary cap.

Of his B&F finishes, these are the ones I can find:

2001 - 9th

2002 - 2nd

2003 - 6th

2006 - 2nd

2008 - 1st

2009 - 3rd

Not bad!

Cam has probably been paid a sight better than Gary Ablett, due to the dearth of deserving players on our list in the last few years.

He's good, but not good enough to warrant top earning in a team where we suddenly need to be careful with our allocation of cap space.

The veteran's list helps his cause, but the club still has to pay him the money, whether it's included in the cap or not.

I think he has been paid over the odds in recent years and probably deserves a pay cut.

Return to form??

Have you checked his finish in the B&F over the past 10 years? That says the club ranks him very highly.

Ok ...I'll bring you up to speed... Im one of those that hadnt been particularly carried away with Bruces performances of some past seasons...so YES a return to some form for mine. Couldnt care less about finishes in B and Fs etc. that can get all very incestuous and clouds some otherwise impartial observations.

But in the spirit of your view...hes been a bit closer to maybe 7-8 years back...rather than 2-3 !!

Spot on.

Earned upwards of $600k this year.

With half outside the cap of course.

He should be looking at half that now. Probably why his manager might be stoking a few rumours.

If he does go, bring Macca back.

I'm not sure it would work out, but if Bruce does go, it would make us look amateurish.

Id agree that hes probably really worth a one year deal only...however if he was offerd two years elsewhere buyt happy to stay on less boxes of cornflakes then its a consideration of some worth. Otherwise.. yep.. buy him lots of Coppertone

It might makes us look like amateurs. But we would given another year to someone who could contribute for only the price of the last rookie chosen - if indeed Bruce goes go.

I don't think it will eventuate but appearances matter little to me.

Could always point to blind sided external circumstances or sudden change of landscape. ie. Gold Coast

Hardly amateurish. But understandable.

Can't see it happening.

You can have your opinions but I'm happy to go with the Footy Dept. They know what instructions CB gets week in week out and how he performs against those instructions. With due respect you wouldn't have the foggiest about that. The B&F is one true way of seeing how the club views its players.

Of course there will be some blinkers now and then like Daniher had with respect to certain players but not over a 10 year period.

That's quite right, the more I've learn, the less I realise I know.

He was paid his worth to the MFC - not the AFL. You can't place comparative standards on Cam except for the fact that each club has 'gotta pay somebody.'

I would have preferred them give some of it to fatten Juniors & Greenies pay packets. Share it a little to our long term boys rather than so much for so little.

If you look at his B&F results over the past 6 years, he thoroughly deserves, and has earned his $600k package. These days half his salary doesn't even count towards the cap bc he's a veteran, so none of us should have any qualms that he's ripped off the club.

Has consistently performed in the best 5 players at the club over a very long time. His experience and leadership will be important next year.

You got to be joking,,, $600 K x 3 years is $1.8Mill... Prob' not far off Pavlich... throw in another $300k & you've got a marquee player.. Not bruce. Brian lake would be cheaper than that.

No way.

This year only 300k of his salary went towards the cap.

That's exactly the same as what Q Lynch was offered at WCE, a guy who doesn't even make their team.

Bruce will come top 5 in our B&F this season. If that's not value i don't know what is

years ago when he was worth more , was paid less because Neitz ,White , Yze and the likes took home the big dollars. was offered more money by the pies and the bombers. he stayed loyal. so its been a bit of catch up. the footy department knew this and have timed it nicely. plus we have to pay 90 odd% of the cap. its all coming together .

Interesting on how everyone is an expert on Cam Bruce's salary package

Its all conjecture

You wouldn't know his salary package i.e. what/if component is performance based, whether it has a front or backloading component, whether he has a promotional component etc etc

Someone here just quotes a figure and everyone just goes along with it - what a joke

Where did you pluck that figure from?

I had a chat with a few folks from the old admin after they signed him up the last time, at the start of the 2007 season I believe. I don't wish to use hyperbole but I believe the mindset of the club as a whole and towards older players was different in March 2007 than it was in September 2007...

As I said before you have 'gotta pay someone.' The minimum to pay everyone this year for example is $7.3m, and the max is only $600k more. The best players at all clubs earn roughly the same amount.

He's on around a $500k base with payments and incentives that can get it up to $600k.

I would say he has got it up that high this season. He's been very good.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
