Agree on the best available- however if this is a tall -PLEASE do not expect him to be a star in 2011.Talls need time...

Furthermore,it is my opinion that we have to have 3 picks.however with the rookie changes now- I do not know if indeed we upgrade ,say Jordie that would qualify for a pick..ditto- Jake Spencer

THE DIFFERENT DRAFT - SELECTION 12, MELBOURNE by Whispering Jack

Unfortunately, Melbourne has hardly produced any star players in this category over the years although paradoxically, the greatest goal kicking effort in AFL/VFL history has been the 18 goal bag of Fred Fanning in the final round of the 1947 season.

In the Norm Smith Book (Red Fox) it is said that Fred Fanning turned to Don Cordner as he ran onto the field that day and said he was going to kick 18 goals.

True or not, that's awesome.

After that game he left to go play country footy, aged 24. Footy has changed.

I still think the most pressing need is to improve our delivery out of defence. I think Smedts or Heppell would provide this at 12, without sacrificing the kind of defensive abilities you'd expect of a quality backman...

More and more I think that a quality mid sized back man is the no 1 priority. Our forwards score pretty well when it gets there, and the mids are going to only get better, but if we want to be a powerhouse we need a player like a young "Stiffy" Johncock in the backline. Having said that I don't know enough about the magoos to know if Strauss can do that job or even if somebody like Maric might be able to fit the bill.

The delivery out of the backline is what is hurting us. When it works we look bloody good but when it doesn't... well, the less said the better.

I also wouldn't mind trading a later draft pick and/or fringe player for a ruckman that would serve us for two or so years to give Jamar some rest as the marking strong body up forward. He doesn't need to be good as long as he is capable for 25 minutes a game.

I’m torn between strong forward and elite kicking halfback. Really like the look of Dyson Heppell, so would be stoked if we got him. Brodie Smith and Billie Smedts are the other half backs I like. If we do go with a HBF at 12, then perhaps someone like Luke Mitchell may slip to our second rounder. Would be a KPP steal if we could pick him up there. If we go for a forward at 12, Tom Lynch is the one I like. Possible that none of these get through to 12, but I’m confident that we’ll get a very good player at this pick.

You have to delist at least three players but you could upgrade three rookies and you wouldn't need to enter the draft, if that was your desire. I believe you are also allowed to play short, that is you don't have a full list if you want to go that way.

Thanks for informing me. I thought this was so- however was not sure.It will be very interesting what the FD does. They will upgrade Jordie McKenzie. Don't know about Spencer..do they either have to upgrade him or delist him or can they retain him as a rookie?. please advise. thanks in anticipation.

I understand the AFL has temporarily reduced the minimum number of draftees per club and will count rookie upgrades as drafts

This is due to the reduced number of cattle available due to the Jan-Apr 17 YOs snaffled up by GC17 last year, and to lack of high draft picks available due to GC17's high number of first round picks.

Someone here hopefully will respond with the exact numbers

On ustream Schwabby mentioned that they are looking at elevating him to the senior list. He said that they definitely aren't delisting him (which I think only gives them 1 option anyway as he can't stay on the RL I don't think.

In Bailey's interview on SEN today he again highlighted the clubs desire for a tall, strong, stay at home forward.

This is a fair indication of what they are looking for through the draft i would have thought (or by trade).

That was my understanding had you had to rotate minimum 3 players off your senior list.

However, they brought in a sneaky little beauty this year. You dont have to finalise your last spot on your "Rookie" list until after the NAB Cup Grand Final and prior to the start of the premiership season. Think you can have like a nominated 3 extra players in a "training squad" type arrangement. Now thats a little cracker!!!

Will have to look seriously at young Mitchell who played in the U/18 Grand Final at the weekend. He is a late comer to the game is a natural forward and a very good kick for goal. Has great agility and is very good below his knees. Will go from a late draft pick rookie to a possible first rounder. May be exactly what we need?

There are two issues intertwining here:

1) What do we need

2) What of our needs should we be going for in the draft, and what in trade/rookie pickups.

The Ruck position is that we need an AFL ready backup for Jamar to serve for the next 2 years. After that, Gawn, Spencer and Fitzpatrick may take up the slack. Unless we are happy with PJ for this role, we should trade for a mature ruck. Probably wont be available in the draft. Can be quite old as he only needs to last 2 years. Would be nice if he could stand in the forward line, kick one goals a game, and knock a few dowm to our smalls.

The need of a KPF is for insurance in case Watts/Fitzpatrick don't make it. Choice between one who is ready to go at AFL level now (through trade) or a youngster in the draft who may not be really firing by 2013. Dealers choice.

The skilled defender with the deadly foot will most likely need pick 12 in the draft. I'd like at least 190cm.

So I would trade whoever we need to outside our core or whatever picks we need to except for pick 12 for a big hard ruck. If you accept a 28 yo, there shoulkd be someone available. If we can't get an AFL experienced guy, go for Orren Stephenson from North Ballarat by whatever means.

Then work out where to look for the tall KPF insurance.

But keep pick 12 for the skilled defender.

A DIFFERENT DRAFT - THE DRAFT COMBINE by Whispering Jack

We are all now painfully aware that with the impending introduction of two new AFL franchises, the coming trade period and drafts will be dominated by the new club, the Gold Coast Suns. The concessions made available to the new club from the Sunshine State have been well documented.

The Suns have already dominated the news in so far as player transfers are concerned. Five players have already announced they are leaving their clubs to play for the AFL 's new boys - Nathan Bock (Adelaide), Campbell Brown (Hawthorn), Jarrod Harbrow (Western Bulldogs), Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide) and Michael Rischitelli (Brisbane) - and we know there's at least another big scalp waiting in the wings for the AFL to give it's nod to the final announcement.

We're a little over a week from the start of trade week but only a couple of days from this year's draft camp which has attracted a new name - the AFL Draft Combine. The AFL has increased the number of players included in the group to be looked at by scouts from 18 clubs to 100 from all states and territories.

That's the number of invitees to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft National Combine including a dozen 17 year olds who will come under the scrutiny of the AFL's 18th club Greater Western Sydney.

According to the AFL, the term "combine" describes "the search for talent as the AFL seeks the combination of the football skills, athletic capabilities and mental toughness needed to play at the elite level."

A further 112 players have been invited to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft State Combine which takes place next week in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The clubs will be straight down to business in the week after Saturday's grand final replay with the exchange period. Once again, the Gold Coast Suns are expected to dominate proceedings with a treasure trove of money, extra salary cap room and a welter of top picks and players from outside the system to trade.

A month later on November 18, 2010 the NAB AFL Draft will be held with the Gold Coast Suns holding the majority of the early draft picks.

The venue?

The Gold Coast Convention Centre of course!

I thought Gorringe and Day were supposed to be athletic freaks in the Naitanui mould..?

Surely the jump tests would be an indicator of this.

(although I understand Day is playing SANFL finals and will attend the state combine.)

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried.
