INS - Sylvia

OUTS - Gysberts (omitted).

1) No McDonald you ask? Just a gut feel that they'll rest him one more week. If he did a proper hammy injury, they say it's 21 days on the sidelines and he's only missed 2 weeks. Secondly, my conspiracy theory (which our friend Rhino Richards rejects) is that they'll rest him this week to ensure he plays his 250th at the G rather in Perth in round 16.

2) WHy the hell drop Gysberts after 2 fantastic games to start his career??? Well I could've thrown the omission blanket over Gysberts, Jetta, Watts, McKenzie and Dunn as they had the least impact of all players last week. However, unfortunetly I feel Gysberts might be the unlucky one this week.

Dunn no impact in the QB game??? Not only was he our most likely to kick goals, but he also stopped their most damaging running defender in Shaw. You might need another look at our last game BBP

Agreed. Dunn could have kicked another 2 goals that game as well, he was all over Shaw like a cheap suit.

Was at the Casey game and can't see anyone coming in from there.

Gysberts? Wouldn't have thought he will go out just yet but if or when Junior is back it would seem likely to be one of Gys or McKenzie that makes way....not that they particularly deserve it?

Sylvia is likely to be ok to resume, who makes way for him assuming that he is straight back in which he should be, IMO he has struggled for consistency after his first couple of games but maybe the toe had been affecting him.

I guess it would be one of Dunn, Miller or Watts to make way for Sylvia. Matt Bate could possibly do with a bit more match sharpness also. I love Matty Bate but he really seems to be wanting for some match fitness this year, I believe he had a limited pre-season which took him 3-4 weeks of the season to get up and running, got injured and came straight back in again. I've no problem with him staying in the side but can see reasoning behind him having a spell....not likely though especially as Casey have a bye.

Watts - I would continue to play him, yes he is making some mistakes but he is also doing some good things and does an extra nice thing each week IMO and I really think he should be left to play out the season unless he really drops off

Miller - I thought he was terrific against the pies and competed sometimes 3 or 4 against 1, he works hard and it's unfortunate for him that the results are not always there. So easy to stick it to this guy and agree his limitations have been well exposed but the hate he gets is not warranted for the effort he gives in the red & blue.

Dunn - super defensive effort against the pies and should've probably kicked another couple.

It might just come down to match ups between Dunn and Miller.

Nev Jetta needs to get a bit more consistent, which can be hard from HFF and couldn't see him being replaced to leave a forward line of Bate, Miller, Watts, Sylvia, Dunn & Green as there is not much in the way of crumbing players.

They could make a swap for one of Wonna or Jimmy Bennell for Jetta but it wouldn't be on form for Casey last week as both were quiet.

If Col and Junior are fit, I agree with the changes. Tempted to drop Jetta rather than McKenzie.

Why the hell drop Gysberts after 2 fantastic games to start his career???

Indeed. You should have have stopped at the 3rd question mark.

Never said he had no impact on the game, but because he had only 7 touches I'm not sure if that will save him from the chop...even though he did a job on Shaw. And lets face it Dunn is always first on the chopping block.

Disposals have very little relevance in modern footy. His role was to simply shut down Shaw as a defensive forward, which he did a fantastic job at. Played a very team-orientated role and will not be dropped.

Indeed. You should have have stopped at the 3rd question mark.

We'll have to drop 1 or 2 players this week and IMO Gysberts was the least effective player last week. Hence that's why I think he'll be omitted. It seems harsh to drop players after a performance like that, but we likely have 2 senior players returning so 2 have to make way.

Fair enough. Although It would not surprise me if Dunn gets dropped simply because he gets dropped every 2nd or 3rd game.

Very tough week at selections this week which is healthy.

Over the past three weeks he has done more than McKenzie. In his 3rd game of AFL, Gysberts was given a fair bit of attention by the Pies. What does that tell you about how oppositions rate him so early in his career?

Sound logic.

What makes everyone think there will be changes!

Sylvia was not in great form before he had the toe problem, does he deserve to go straight back in?

I agree with a few posters Junior may well be rested another week, he is not a spring chicken any longer.

If one of Sylvia or junior is in I think the drop out will be Jetta, thought he was average.

If two back then outs are Jetta and either one of Scully or Trengove, I feel their form has dropped off since Perth.

A run with Casey will do them no harm.

Whoever it is will be stiff IMO!

Gysberts has played three games and was arguably our best player in two of them, and in the third was given a hard time by mature bodies because of this. I highly doubt dropping him is on the radar at all. If McDonald and Sylvia are both fit then the omissions will come from one of Watts and Miller, and one of McKenzie and Jetta IMO. I can't see anyone else being in contention from being left out.

the number of times a player touches the ball is irrelevant, he played his role perfectly, and for that he is no chance of being dropped.

If players stats were what the ins and outs were based on, Watts and Miller would have been dropped weeks ago

The only players not playing at senior level atm who deserve to play at senior level in the near future are Sylvia, McDonald, Jurrah, Bennel and Wona.

Gysberts, Dunn and Miller are probably the 3 players who will find themselves first out in the coming weeks. Dunn and Miller are only depth players and I think Gysberts will benefit from dominating VFL level.

Our depth actually isn't very good at all

I think i read that Casey has a bye this week? Pity, as it means whoever gets dropped wont be able to find touch in the VFL. That means two weeks without footy for whoever it is, which seems pointless. For that reason i hope Watts and Gys keep their spots.

Sylvia and McDonald will play if fit.

The two ommissions will come from Miller, Jetta, Watts, Dunn, Gysberts and McKenzie. I'm tipping McKenzie and Jetta, but I wouldn't be surprised if Gysberts is 'rested'.

i personally think it would be a good experience for Gysberts to go on an interstate trip, but i guess that does not come into calculation at the selection table

I agree. I maintain that it's not possible to have good depth until you've got zero NQRs in your team on a regular basis. We've got at least two in our side, possibly more depending on your definition.

In: Sylvia & McDonald

Out: McKenzie & Miller

I saw some things I liked from Watts last week and I'd like to persevere with him in the 1s for now.

Same goes for Gysberts.

McKenzie is a bit stiff, but that's what you get when you have a team half-full of developing kids.

Someone ends up drawing the short straw.

Re: selection being tough now - this isn't tough.

Tough is when you have 24 accomplished players seriously deserving of a spot and the player you choose will have a direct effect on the outcome.

I really don't get all this talk of dropping Jetta, I thought he was very good on QB. Especially in the 2nd & 3rd quarters so can't see him getting dropped.

Assuming McDonald & Sylvia come in then I'd say drop McKenzie & Watts.

McKenzie: Hasn't been the same since he missed the North game in round 6, him being out will allow Scull and Treners a bigger run in the middle.

Watts: Hasn't done a lot wrong, but with Miller & Dunn's impressive efforts the other week their form needs to be rewarded. Giving Watts another 2 games with Casey wont hurt him get some more confidence, will also help him qualify for VFL finals.

Hmmmm, my first reaction to the part about qualifying for VFL finals was, "how ridiculous", but upon further consideration I wonder if there might be something in this...

I don't know how many games the qualifying criteria calls for, but if it was few enough that rotating a player like Watts just a couple of times through Casey might be worthwhile in giving him exposure to finals games once the MFC season is over. Obviously you'd only do this if his (lack of) form warranted it and there was a player deserving of promotion, but it's not entirely without merit.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
