Talia?? Is he the one your thinking of? Time will tell.

Some Adelaide player who apparently is struggling in the SANFL

Great Job Gysberts! Must Admit i was pretty suprised when we took him with pick 11 as there hadn't been much mention of him. Does anyone know were the "experts" rated him to be picked up in the draft, just as a matter of interest?

I think you will find that when we were interested in Blease, Gysberts has played all his school and junior footy with him, so Prendergast got to see him, then we got him in as part of the AIS scheme and he really impressed, don't think the MFC even listened to the 'experts' but most had him top 20, because of Scully, Trengove, Bastinac and Martin he flew under the radar a bit as being a 'gun' midfielder........another victory for BP

Matt Burgan had him going to Essendon at 24.

Emma Quayle had him ranked at 20.

I believe the general consensus was that he would be an early-to-mid second round pick, so it was a bit of a surprise when the Dees took him at 11. Having said that he was among Shifter Sheehan's top 5 prospects to look out for in the TAC Cup Future Stars show early in 2009, and was apparently on the radar of Sydney at 14 and Geelong at 17.

Definitely happy with him so far.

MFC's drafting in 2009 was next to flawless imo.

Pick 1 & 2- Scully & Trengove--- spot on picks. 2 players that will be superstars and core members of our future midfield

pick 11- Gysberts---- grabbed the opportunity to take a 'different type' of midfielder. 190cm tall midfielder who is good at clearances and feeding the ball to outside players. Will complement our midfield nicely.

Pick 18- Tapscott---- absolute steal.... could add another dimension to half forward/ midfield with his ability to kick the ball 65m

All these picks strengthen our midfield greatly.

Pick 35- Gawn----- for a relatively low pick, we need another ruckman and this guy could be a goer. time will tell

Pick 50- Fitzy---- in last year's draft this pick was relatively speculative. 200cm ruck/forward worth a shot

These two in particular were daylight robbery. Thinking back to the people who went to the draft function, didn't they say that these two were slated for picks 18 and 35 before Tapscott became available at 18? Unbelieveably that they both fell so far down the order that we still got them.

Excellent effort, congratulations Jordan.

His idol growing up was James Hird. He has the same tall, skinny frame - am I allowed to dream?

Good signs for the future at the Dees. 3 nominations in 11 rounds so far - with potentially many more to come.

Great work Berts.

Now if only Watts can break out a big game and McKenzie can get back in for some votes, we can get a monopoly on this rising star award. Does anyone know what is the most amount of nominees from one team in one year?

I know Essendon had 5 in 1993....Hird, Fletcher, Mercuri, Misiti, Olarenshaw....this would have to be close to the record.

This is a fantastic result for both him and the club. He's been fantastic over the past two weeks, especially in two losses. However we have to remember he will not be able to do this every week. The longer he performs like this there is a greater chance he shall be picked up by an opposition player. On the flipside, imagine the prospect of Gysberts, Scully and Trengove all in the midfield in years to come! Terrifying for the opposing sides hehe=D

Just had a quick look and the winner seems to be.......FITZROY!!!

They had 6 noms in 1994....Barker, Molloy, Scott, Hawking, Clarke, Johnson.......a pity that none ever got to carry that club forward! (yes, some did at Brisbane.)

And we know too well how far that team went. Maybe a good sign. ;) Not so much on the Roys team though. doh..

I think Carlise was another highly rated tall who went to Essendon in the mid 20's (a guess) but I heard on the radio a bomber voice saying how pleased they were with the way he was coming on at CHF.

A bigger question was the year we took Maric at 22 when we were crying out for talls and Roughhead went to the doggies early 30's

Ball magnet, thought he deserved the nomination last week but glad to see another top notch effort in his second game got the job done. Might be a big call, but I can see glimpses of a young Goddard in the Gys.

I'm thrilled for the kid!

Is this the first nomination this year from a losing side? Seems them who make the decisions have pretty much always chosen the nominations from winning teams. So, makes this nomination that much more special.

Now, just need to get Watts, McKenzie and Strauss's names added to the list of nominations! (And, is Bail eligible? If so, him, too! That would make a new record of seven for the year!)

Go Dees!!

I'm pretty sure it was 4 for Fitzroy and 2 for the Bears.

Chris Scott and Matthew Clarke were the Bears IIRQ.

Gys is definitely looking the goods, will be good to see where he settles in the side!

My money would be on Sammy Blease being the next cab off the rank.

so what odds would you give me for a melbourne player winning the rising star award vs...nick nat winning?

this is fantastic result for the young fella...

Well done to Gys!

I'm glad he got it, and love that once again our kids are right up there in the award...

But how stiff must Tom Rockliff (and Lions supporters) be feeling? He's had 30 and 29 disposals in the last two weeks, surely he would have to be next?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
