I was listening to SEN on the drive home today - for those who didn't hear it Brent Moloney was interviewed via phone...

Nothing new that we already know from the weekend but it was very positive and you can tell he loves the club - made Schwarters day when Brent told him he was his favoutite player growing up.

Anyway,

I'm sure Matt Granland when telling everyone to sign up - said that 7000 members from last year hadn't signed up yet. Did anyone else hear this correctly? Hoping I didn't mis hear 700 as 7000!

While it could be seen as disappointing - I see it as a real positive.

That would mean 7000 new members have joined the club from last year despite the bottom placed finish.

Previous members would have to be easier to get back to the club rather than attracting entirely new people whom may not go to the football each week.

And, hopefully with a few wins on the board hopefully these old members will resign with the MFC in 2010.

If we can get these people back on board - our membership can push well into mid 30k! which we all know would be fantastic for the club.

I know that this is the wrong place to rant about this, because I'm sure 99% of Demonland members are also paid up members, but if you are one of those unsigned members from last year, for the love of god please get off your fat behind and renew!

I understand that for some people there are extenuating circumstances which are stopping them from renewing, but I bet about 6980 of those unsigned members are just weak fans who are waiting for us to climb up the ladder before they bother handing over their cash.

If you fall into that category, please grow a set and go get a membership and help fund our meteoric rise. Because you'll want to tell your friends/kids/neighbours that you were there when Scullgove, Frawley, Grimes, Watts and so forth became AFL superstars.

Hopefully now that Jimmy is on the mend from his recent operation, the club will go ahead with the ring around of each of the 7000 unsigned "members" and get them back on board.

I don't think I could post here if I wasn't a member. I'd feel dirty or something.

You have a way with words Jaded. Very intimidating, love your work. Good post.

We should each aim to sign up one other member within the next few weeks!

I intend to buy a membership for my nephew - do you think my brother-in-law (mad Saint) will be filthy ?...

I have a feeling that a certain percentage of those might actually be a slight admin quirk. Last year I was considered an un-renewed member because I bought a new membership through a different system instead of renewing my old membership, they must have called me 5 times to re-sign me even though I told them otherwise.

3 years ago I was overseas, I didn't buy a membership, I donated the money, and bought raffle tickets.

2 years ago my brother and I bought my dad a membership, but last year we decided to spend that money on better memberships/ some other MFC things for ourselves (I couldn't get dad to come along).

In each case these memberships resulted in un-renewed memberships. But the money input to the club remained the same. The point is that the 7000 number doesn't mean that there are 7000 members who have jumped ship, it is far more complicated than that.

Don't forget that we have an ageing membership list heavily skewed towards baby boomers. Every year some of our members are going to retire from going to the footy. This might soak up a few of the 7000.

I'm sure we'll get past 30,000 in the end - but we might struggle to beat the budget of 31000. You'd think that most members would have signed up by the end of the 3rd home game - which is against Brisbane on Saturday week.

Jaded, you are a keyboard hero in the absolute best definition of the term. Get off your arses if you haven't already, for the fire has started and there's fuel to burn.

I bought MFC/MCC memberships for my father, brother and sister last year.

This year I can't afford it & I'm having trouble talking them into it, but they'll crack eventually.

Also got 2 mates who are soft supporters & decided not to sign up again this year after the hawthorn match, but now have changed their tune & will sign up so they can watch us [censored] the tiges.

But i still think that Freo NAB Cup match was "critical" :P

  • 2 weeks later...

Just saw a quote on the MFC website - having just reached over 30,000 members.

"Last year’s record tally of 31,500 is now in our sight, and we are calling on all of the 6,000 members from last year who are yet to renew to sign up now and help us smash this record"

So it was true about so many not signed up...

Cmon guys get back on board!! you won't regret it!

This also happened to me. Last year all 6 in our family moved from Redleg to Trident. This resulted in 6 unrenewed Redleg memberships.

Yeah, I'm sure those people that signed up for 2009, on the back of the horror year that was 2008, are just weak fans waiting for us to climb up the ladder before bother handing over their cash.

They only bothered to hand over their cash in 2009 because they were inspired by our 2008 performances, right?

Honestly, the whole keyboard hero act is somewhat understandable, but I don't see how demeaning any Melbourne fan - let alone those that assisted in us breaking our membership record after a pathetic year - is helpful.

Red bull has a good point i am paid up and i have even gone as far as buying a presidents membership at neally $800 and i have an AFL membership with a mfc support.

I have been to the 4 games so far and not even used my presidents membership and will probbably not even use it for the whole year, i call it a donation.

My point if you are on here and do not have a membership join up or f@#k off

I thought I would add my two bob..

No every member has the financial ability to become a member when they wish or join as early as they wish. I'm a gold members but there has been years where money is tight and i haven't joined till after the season has begun but its been continuous through one of the worst periods since the early eighties. That is not because I wait to see if we are winning games, but that xx amount of money becoming spare. For example this year it was delayed as we now have four members in our house up from two last year, so i had to find double the amount of money.

So no one should never hang their head in shame if they can't afford it.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
