Demons cut Valenti and Buckley

Valenti offers far more than just "endeavour", his football smarts, awareness, quick hands, good footskills and leadership have been much underrated by many.

Clint, what do you perceive as being Valenti's weaknesses?

He's not the quickest, but that is often over-exaggerated here.

He's short, but like I have said many times he is often at the bottom of the pack where height is not much of an issue.

He's not the longest kick, but his short kicking is often good.

I was never surprised by his delisting, partly because he is the same mold as a Moloney, Jones, McDonald and I think that is his biggest weakness.

So he has weaknesses, but not really...?

I have a higher opinion than RR of the bloke and I will go out on a limb and say that he will be on a list or RL somewhere in 2010.

Difficult to see a spot for him as is, even harder if we get Ball.

Plus the possible additions of Scully and Trengove in this year's draft. It is a massive weakness.

An enormous weakness for Valenti.

Some would say gigantic.

There are some players who's value around the club outweigh their football ability and skill, I reckon that Valenti is one of them.

The last one like that was Simon Godfrey. You cant carry players like that on AFL list of 40. You must move them on.

Not every player on the list is talented enough to get a game every week.

That's a worry, Valenti is not even on the main list.

We already have 4 or 5 on the main list who have their contract's expire in 2010 and will be gone because they are not good enough.

Why don't we take Dave Hughes with pick one in the draft, might not get a game but god he would be good to have round the club

Pffft. He'd request a trade to Carlton first chance he got.

I think Valenti has a better football brain than Godfrey and is more skilled. Valenti is capable of playing good AFL football I don't think Godfrey was.

I always liked Godfrey as a kid, reminded me of vacuum cleaners... and everyone knows what vacuums do...

Bit harsh. I always thought he gave 100%. He may not have been the best kick or disposal going around, but he did his job most of the time.

The day he kicked two on the full in first few minutes of QB '03 (?) I could've killed Godders.

The moment he kicked a right foot goal from 45 on the run in QB '06 (?) I could've kissed him.

Good battler

I Seen Godders at the London tavern, and asked him about that goal, the smile on the mans face was priceless, his remark was "I always a natural kick for goal" lol

QB '07? I remember it well. Godfrey got the ball about 45m out and had a snap on goal. At that point, I buried my face in my hands and thought Godders WTF are you doing?! But when I heard the crowd roar, I jumped about 10 feet in the air when it went through

haha

Couldn't stand him when he had the ball in his hands but always loved his toughness.

Are we expecting 1 maybe 2 more delistings in the next few days ?

Are we waiting on the outcome with Luke Ball before making an announcement ?

I would be very surprised if we dont

I have to admit Im more than half expecting an announcement of anoter delisitng(s) tomorrow. Part of my thinking is to do with forward planning and no, not forward line planning. With GC and WS lurking we need tobuild stocks, some will be all but warehoused over next year or so but it might give us some more ( or better )options regardig our lists going forward than we might have at present.

We pretty well know as a club what some players' currency is or could be. The FD might roll the dice and think its better to excise a couple more in order to take on new blod that might provide more options for the club as it enters the twilight-zone of sanctioned 'poaching' etc

i.e it could be a simple gamble.. replace a lacklustre player(s) with one or two who might have more upside..might !!

I'm hoping for another delisting - but I'm not holding my breath.

Its possible to list players ( in lodgement one) who have not signed a new contract - so tomorrow is not the end of the line.

I'm also hoping that Hughes comes off the rookie list to free up more space there

i reckon theyll cut Newton and then put him on the rookie list (if no other club takes him) so they dont waste the money for paying him out totally.

I'm even going to start with what's impossible about this desire of yours...

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
