2009 Player Review - # 11 Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson – Paul played most of the year and carried the ruck for much of it, because we had injuries to Jamar, Spencer and Meesen. He played some good games, but his standout performances were on the competition's best ruckmen – Dean Cox and Aaron Sandilands. What he has to work on is his consistency because he can play well one week and not have much impact the next - Sean Wellman - Melbournefc.com.au

If another club wants to trade for him I say we take it.

built like a tank. Wish he realised that and used it.

agreed, when he tackles ferociously the opposition feel it. but he doesn't put in enough, id give him another year. Just incase we get another Jolly situation

Needs to improve his second/third/fourth efforts increase his tank and his ball handling and contested marks.

The guys the size of a panza tank plays give him 1 more year if he shows no improvment trade him.

Too many games he's getting mid teen possessions with half a dozen clangers turning over the ball too much.

With the Mclean news, I'm thinking we only have 2 more players to move on.

In my mind, I have been leaning towards Bartram and Miller.

That would leave us with Meesen, Johnson and Jamar with the option to promote Spencer. I'd rather keep Barts over PJ.

Despite a couple of good games when flying solo he hasn't shown that he'll be a #1 ruck candidate IMO.

He also doesn't have another string to his bow, which you'd want from your second ruck.

Was not a great season. I'm not writing him off though. Could have a good year next year, he will only ever be a 2nd ruck though.

...and what is he doing when he's not relieving the main ruckman?

He's been given time up forward and hasn't proved the goods.

After showing a lot of promise in 2008, I thought he would be our #1 ruckman in 2009. Unfortunately he failed to progress despite being given every opportunity. Played a couple of good games, but the rest were terrible. I very much doubt that he will command a regular spot in our best 22 in 2010 (if he remains on our list).

Always haven't minded PJ. Hasn't set the world alight, but is solid when he actually performs. The review is very accurate, his consistency a problem. Still don't know if going with Jamar, Meesen and Spenser in ruck would be strong enough though. I guess we can put Martin there if need be.

My thoughts exactly, really thought he would take the opportunities this year and step up and cement that position. He didnt. I dont htink he can. Happy to trade

I am still not sold on Meesen, and until the day Meesen or Jamar can lock down the ruck spot with consistence, Pj stays on the list as some insurance.

Spencer is going to take years to get to the level required, that said I think he will get there and be solid. In the mean time we need to make the call as to who will ruck until Spencer (or other potential gun draftee) is ready. 2010 is the final year for all 3 if they cannot lock it down, so I say go around one more year with all 3 (Jamar/meesen/PJ) and see who can win the ruck spot!

Such as pushing forward and kicking goals....

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
