Brian Lake?

Melbourne have taken their chance.

The Bulldogs Campbell Rose came out in the papers and said that "we have given Brian our price and we will NOT be trading Lake under any circumstance", many footballing pundits beleive this to mean: "we wont be trading him to rival clubs who we are in direct competition with", ie. they are prepared to do a Port Adelaide/Nick Stevens and let him walk to a "lesser" club for nothing.

It's silly as in the end - they lose out.

Yeah, but its a bluff - if they don't give him what he wants, then hopefully Lake will choose the next best thing for him, which they think is to stay with the dogs.

They're probably right too.

I heard that, and the question is, why would we need him?

We've got much bigger holes than our defence.

Salary cap.

You can't overpay young players. You have to have room for future incentive pay rises as the kids improve.

Use the whole cap on kids prematurely, where do you go from there?

i think this is a great sign for the melbourne fc. but we should send the big $ towards a forward ie,roughie. although i dont think he will come but if he was to come hopefully this will help us get bigger name players in the future. if we were to pick him up i reckon we might use him forwward.

if we can use psd 1 on him. :)

I can't believe some of the crap coming out of guys on this forum... you don't get the chance to add a top ten player in the AFL to your list very often. Alot of people on here are calling to draft the best available but because our defence is okay (its going good but nothing like Geelongs) we say we shouldn't take him in PSD. We wouldn't have to give up any picks and could still target a foward or midfielder in the trade period.

(for mousey) The club has to pay a minimum of 92.5% of the salary cap. which for 2009 is 7.11. The max is 7,693,750. MFC has paid 92.5 the last couple of years and like you stated we will have three senior players retire this year. If the Bulldogs are offering 450K and stated take it or leave it why wouldn't the MFC ask how much he wants... If he wanted 700K (which I think he would be worth) we have the extra in the cap from the retired players and only paying 92.5%. We would front load his contract over three years and tell him if he went into the PSD with that contract we would agree... It would now be up to the Bulldogs, they could raise his contract or let him go or trade him... This is what being ruthless with the PSD1 is all about and we would be getting a gun player.

The football club has stated (I think it was in the Herald sun article) that the club has the cash to get a big name... this is nothing like Warnock who hasn't proved a thing but an AA player (how many has the MFC had in the past decade). I think his age is a disadvantage but not enough to stop you taking someone like that for free when all be have to give is cash (we will pay market value, the Bulldogs can't afford that) and we have that.

For those that think the age is a major problem he is only 2 years older than warnock and played 110 more games....

[/standing Applause On]

Spot on Wolf, great summary. If we got Lake he would be a huge bonus to a devloping team, whether at full back for full forward.

I just would like to keep Warnock, Garland and Chip.

Rivers can go if need be

Hardly similar circumstances though

If true, this seems a somewhat surprising move by us.

To me, the biggest thing is Lake's age.

To me this suggests, along with the Sandilands rumour, that the club believes we're a lot further advanced than the outside world perceives us to be.

Perhaps we think our window will start in 2 years time, in which case a Lake or a Sandilands is certainly going to move things along quicker. Maybe we're trying to do a Hawthorn, grab a flag ahead of our time and then remain in contention for numerous seasons with a very young list?

Of course this may all be [censored].

On a side note, I'd never say no to a quality, experienced tall who comes to us for FREE via the PSD. We have money in the cap and could use some experience/leadership. I assume that if we get Lake, Garland will move up forward permanently.

A few points about possibly recruiting Lake.

Could we do with him?

Look at Geelong's defence. Their best defender, Scarlett, doesn't play on the opposition's best forward but rather Harry Taylor does that. Scarlett plays as a defensive playmaker with his strength, run, disposal and marking ability being far more valuable. Tom Harley plays as a mid sized defender that is like a defensive organiser. We can very easily play with Warnock = Taylor, Lake = Scarlett and Frawley = Harley.

What is the cost?

Considering we are having to front load contracts now simply to get up to the minimum 92.5%, I don't think that money is too much of an issue. This is especially so considering the retirements of 3 senior players from a team that has won 7 games in 2 years. In terms of trading/draft, if we use PSD 1 then we effectively get him for nothing.

What if we don't get him?

Then the Bulldogs have had to overpay their players when they are close going over the salary cap. This is good for us as it means that it may push another player out the back and weaken an opponent. We should be doing this to several players.

Besides, it is sweet payback for screwing us on the Mission deal.

Age was my first thought. Is there exceptional circumstances where the 'goal posts' could move despite our apparent youth policy?

Is Brian Lake, nominee for AA in 2009, 28 next season, an exceptional circumstance..?

I don't think Melbourne are confident of getting him. More so, they are giving him this massive contract as to push up his price at the Dogs, ensuring they pay more than they wanted, to keep him. It all goes back to the Mission Foods sponsorship.

<_< Do you think Cameron Schwab is taking another swipe at Campbell Rose?...

Keep Picks one and two. No trading of prospects for a 28 year old.

If Lake is the best OOC player in December then of course we take him.

On what salary rpfc - 600K?

This thread is a total waste of.........um... well..... internet space and time!

Why would our FD pick anyone up (no matter how good) that is not going to be around for our next tilt? Realistically this 2012 -2015 and I think 2012 is optimistic.

Melbourne will not be picking up any players that can’t play a minimum of 100 games. End of story.

If you’re going to waste your time talking rumours at least talk ones that are plausible. Just because someone said it on TV does not mean it’s real or plausible.

i assume because you think WE are getting ripped. Hodge ain't worth that.

He would be a good pickup if he had a great work ethic and helps build a strong defensive culture in the team. At 28 he has a lot of years left in him as a backman and could be a good role model for our developing defending. Hopefully whne he retires we'll be left with 6+ top line defenders who have learnt from one of the best available at this time. Being a backman I think you'll get at least 4/5 years out of his body assuming there is nothing already breaking down.

The salary cap is not an issue as we are front loading our contracts so we can meet the 92.5% requirement so we have lots of room.

You are right. He is worth more than that and the Hawks know it. I think Jacey has a reasonable but overracted point on this.

The Hawks would demand pick 1 and Grimes for Hodge. The whole Hodge deal aint happening.

Hodge is nigh on untouchable... Hawks woudn't trade him unless we paid way over the odds...

Here's an interesting thought, Is it possible for us to trade the rights to our PSD pick #1 to Hawthorn (who are desperate for Lake) for either player or draft pick(s)? If Hawthorn were prepared to give up pick #9 for Lake, but the Bulldogs refused to trade him, we could weasel in and be the perfect conduit to make the deal happen, and in return effectively trade PSD #1 for National draft #9...

The only thing I don't know is if you are allowed to trade PSD Picks for players?? Does anyone else know?

they might think he's worth pick 1 and grimes but i certainly don't, thats Judd territory. i think i would rather keep an accountable creative half-backer and take the best midfield prospect in a while, than trade for a half backer who has questionable accountability, and a lethal left foot.

you're right though.......no way the hodge deal will happen. that works for me.

If we had the choice between an AA forward an AA backman then sure go for the forward. But the choice of a probable AA backman an unproven over looked 18 year old. Some people still want the unproven 18 year old?

You'd hope there's some other player willing to come to us with the PSD (although the direct value of the #1 PSD pick is often over-rated).

The only thing I don't know is if you are allowed to trade PSD Picks for players?? Does anyone else know?

I'm not sure.

Interesting idea though.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
