Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Momentum may ultimately create a snowballing success of victories , which MAY still get us into the lower echelons of the 8 this year , such is the evenness of the competition , however the alternative of many honourable losses will obviously lead to frustration but the sought after draft picks .

I don't think the answer is as obvious as first thought , bearing in mind that if we somehow gain the momentum that leads us to the finals , we will obviously have been good enough to be deservedly there , and thereby not without a chance .

What do you desire ?

We're not making finals. That's nigh-on impossible from here. The only thing we stand to lose is draft position from here on out. I would prefer to see us miss a wooden spoon, AND get picks 1 + 3... But in the end that's a bit much to hope for.

Will we win the flag this year.... Still a no for my mind, as honourable as yesterday was

Picks 1 and 2 before the Gold Coast and West Sydney concessions are worth 10 times their weight in gold.

Last 2 weeks have been fantastic, periods of great development with no chocolates to rue at years end.

We will create a winning culture NEXT year and beyond

Im not really fussed about picks 1 and 2. Ive said it before we have had a few good years of drafting which is already starting to show signs of coming together nicely as yesterday showed us. Lets not forget Watts, Blease and Strauss havent even been in the team yet. Im not saying we will make the finals or anything stupid like that but it wont be a complete disaster to not finish on 4 wins. We will still get a top 3 pick regardless.

We are no chance of finals this year but we have found the perfect time to find some form. Hawthorn and St Kilda in the next 2 weeks and credible performances will see our respect gaining. Finish that off with a win on QB and even the uneducated fan will be starting to take notice. By rd 14-15 we could be looking to send anyone with niggles off for surgery

I watched the second half at a pub full of bulldog fans in the Western suburbs after work. The doggies around me were surprised at how good we were and I heard it said more than once that our young list had a good future. A group of old ladies pulled me aside to let me know how impressed they were with our kids and to offer their luck for our future. We're starting to shake the laughing stock tag, the long journey back to respect has begun.

Right now our season is progressing beautifully. The improvement is there for everyone to see, the gameplan is emerging and it looks fantastic when its clicking. I'm gaining confidence in our handball. Some of the handball and run out of defence in the last few weeks has been bold and breathtaking. They are playing very attractive football but blowing it with turnovers, something that will improve in time.

If we can continue like this and win only 4 I for one will be ecstatic. If we win more than 4 so be it, keep improving at this rate and it may take some supreme list management to keep us below 5 wins. No matter what happens the only way from here is up, go dee's!

I still want us to get picks 1 & 2. Will be worth it's weight in gold considering GC and WS to come in with their draft concessions.

At most we'll win 8 games this year but hope we wont, I think Scully and Butcher will be very important players for us over the next few years.

As for developing a winning culture we can do that next year before pushing for finals in 2011.

I wish that we win the flag this year.................. but thats not going to happen.

So given that id rather get picks 1 and 2, especially given what we all know is coming with Gc and possibly and 18th team.

This could be the biggest chance MFC has to gain an advantage over the compition for the next ten years.

Its clear that this year we are building a game plan and an attitude at our club that will hold us in good stead for the future,

were also finding out who on the list is up to the task for the years to come.

Ifn the interest of the years to come i can handle 1 more spoon

I also want flags, but the reality is that we would need to be touched by angels to have the run on we would need for that. The unique situation of the compromised drafts leave me in a position where like many have said before, having the pick of the best choccies in the pack will keep us sweet tooths happy when we're lucky-dipping with more boiled lollies than chocolates. I can handle people laughing at team 16, but not laughing at our diabolical performance or game plan. I'll be there every week wanting a win, then after the siren being happy with a loss. It goes against the grain, but there you go. Only when there is a lottery for draft picks between the bottom 4 teams, and no gold coast and west sydney, will the system right itself again.

My wish is for A bumper snow season, For a 2009 land rover and my house in Toorak to be one story higher.

But really I want us to get the best for the club, which at this stage is picks 1 and 2.

Another wish would be for the AFL to change the stupid priority pick system, I hate feeling like its a win if we lose this year.

I do want Picks 1 & 2. We can win 3 more games to keep pick 1. Need Richmond to string a few together for us to keep pick 2. So our rematch with them is vital in what picks will will recieve. I say tank!

We can still stay competitve! Bailey just needs to rotate the side and try players in unamiliar positions. We can go hell for leather next season. But lets look beyond this season now!

I wish "supporters" would stop talking about wanting to loose games.

Winning more than 4 game would just be plan Stupid. I can see why you would want to win and fair enough but getting these daft picks will be fantastic for future depth.

I know how you feel, and I was as disappointed as anyone when we lost yesterday. But Hannabal was right when he posted it was the perfect result.

It is just the way the rules mould our actions; I believe we are a 5 and 17 team or a 4 and 18 team. The consequences of winning five games as opposed to four hurt more than losing close ones to top eight teams.

Only 14 more weeks to put up with it...

Unfortunately due to the AFL's system of drafting and who gets the priority picks, we are all bound to start wanting to lose games if we are around that bottom four area, (which we are).

It's completely the AFL's fault for introducing the stupid rule.

I hate the idea of wanting to lose to gain draft picks but what else can a supporter do if their club is struggling and need some young talent for the future?

It's a tough one. The AFL definitely need to change this one.

I agree with the competition so even getting a priority pick will be so important that extra pick could turn us into a future Geelong or St.Kilda without that pick we will have no advantage hence we at best could end up being like the other 14 sides dangerous but very beatable as well. We need all the advantages we can get we stuffed up against Calton 2 years ago we can't do it again.

My wish is for the club (read: NOT the players), to do whatever they possibly can in order to ensure that we don't win more than 4 games this season.

I don't want players to stop trying, and I don't go to games and barrack for a loss, but the importance of grabbing the best two kids in the draft this year, cannot be underestimated. Not only will it make us a better team, it will prevent another club from improving their list by grabbing a top kid.

We must must must take advantage of this draft. Scully + Butcher *or insert any other two top players* are my wish for 2009.

If given the choice between winning 6-7 games this year, or winning the next Judd AND Roughead, I think most supporters would go for option B.

Very true, I think bailey is smart enough to get the picks yet keep our boys playing competative football.

I totally agree Jaded. Problem is, our young team are far exceeding most of our dreams this year and we may well finish with more than 5 wins this year. We probably should have won the last 2 games and we would be knocking on the door of the 8. I am incredibly thrilled with the way they played yesterday with so much talent in the stands watching and as much as I would be stoked to get picks 1 and 2, I have a feeling we are going to be knocking off quite a few teams this year, starting with Collingwood on Queens B and who would be unhappy about that!!

I just wish supporting your team didn't have to be so complicated. I hate that every win has to be overshadowed by this priority picks debate. It's going to be such a relief next year when we can focus on winning and nothing else.

Even after we beat Brisbane in that thriller last year, there was a guy who came on here, shattered that we'd put the priority pick at risk. There has to be a better system than this.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
