This is why, despite everyone knowing that getting the priority picks is best for MFC in the future, no one at the club will come out and condone losing.

Its about losing without it being acceptable, i.e. competitiveness, but shrewd list management.

The "We need to develop a winning culture" argument is utter cr@p.

In no circumstances should losing be acceptable, but have a look at Geelong's record before they went on a 45-2 tear. Or look at Hawthorn the years it got its priority picks and built its list.

Didn't seem to hurt them.

In fact, I think losing and losing badly plays an integral role in fostering a killer instinct.

Having been through the experience of having other teams step on your throat is what will teach our young players to cherish the chance to inflict pain in the future.

There's few things better than hearing one of your players say:

".. I remember them doing it to us just a few years ago, so I have no sympathy; I take great pleasure in comprehensively flogging the <insert team name here>..."

(preferably the filth)

I'm not saying we need to develop a winning culture- I don't like that argument either.

Winning games is what you do in Footy- to get up the ladder and try and make the finals.

Why can't we win games instead of talking about us being 3-19 or 4-18 when we have only played 5 games?

At the moment carlton have developed a strong team but because they've spent so long tanking they struggle to win those close games due to a lack of a winning culture.

Geelong didn't spend years tanking to build a premier team and yet they are the best team in the competition. What i want from the demons this year is to play competitive football and challenge some teams in the top 8 and possibly even win one or two games.

WE MUST REDEVELOPE PROPERLY.

the last thing i want is do what freo did and start going up the ladder and fall starit back down over n over due to lack of of talent thatthey could of got by blooding young kids and getting talent draft pics rather tyhan recruiting older players thinking there a chance of finals.

I dont want to go through this again.

weve coped so much already winning one or two extra games does us no good.

It wasn't the Carlton game that cost us... they were never going to let that get away. It was the win against the Western Bulldogs at the Dome that year. We were ranked outsiders and got up by 40+ from memory, it wasn't long after Riley was appointed caretaker coach. I don't think we need to worry too much, despite the fact that I love this club, and like most of us - it consumes and it's all we think about... I can't see us winning 5 games this year... so lets try and win four.

We have a poor run coming up - Geelong, WCE away, Hawthorn, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood. Really, I would love to see us knock the Pies off on Queens Birthday, but I can't see us winning too many of those games. We could be 1-10 at the halfway.

Four competitive quarters of football. Thats Watt I want...

The future comes first.

After reading the Article in the Hun this morning i wouldn't mind Butcher & Scully in the "new Side" But at the same time if the Boys win more than 4 games playing good football i will be yelling hard for them. After Round 14 i would consider "List management" if we are down the bottom.

I agree with WYL, it's far too early to be talking about not winning on account of draft picks. After all, we might get pick no.1 only to have him break his leg or turn out a dud for dozens of reasons.

If there's one game i'd love them to win, it's tomorrow... that's Watt i'll be cheering about!

I'd be happier with 5 wins than 4 wins at the end of the season.

I think you'd be the only Melbourne supporter who would prefer that outcome.

What would you rather? A late season meaningless (5th) win that would be forgotten in a hurry, or a potential 200 gamer for the club?

There is no way the club intends to win more than 4 games. The lure of the top 2 picks in the last untainted draft would be at the forefront of future planning. Butcher and Watts could well be the the saviour of our club from both a winning games perspective and also marketing and attracting a better draw. Without Franklin Hawthorn would be minus a premeirship and 10,000 members less. You do the math!

IMHO you are 100% right, some people around here dont understand how we can grow a strong long-term relationship with Casey.

Lets develop a strong "winning culture" lets build a strong team bond under Peter German.

Once our kids are FULLY ready then they can take the next step, when they have the bodies and mental attitude to handle the pressure cooker environment of AFL football.

Too many people are short term thinkers with zero patience.

PS ... Everybody is raving about Watts, in fact I've not read one supporter bag him (yet) now how do you think we got him ... ahhhh ... we finished last!

Bang.

Top up at the top end with 2 of the best u18 youngsters. We've got a lot of supporting casts atm so let's get some star power.

No doubt, then people will start to swoon about our supporting cast and argue how great they are.

Fortunately we'll also have pick 2 if we win only a few more games.

Footy Forecaster currently has us finishing bottom with.............5 WINS.

http://footyforecaster.com/AFL/SeasonForecast

Oh dear.

If you look at the predictions round by round, they dont predict us having another win all season.

Some forecaster!?

Does Footy Forecaster take into account injuries and list management??

don't worry guys. the forecast thing has an error in it. I went through each round to check the forecast and it had us finishing on only 1 win yet on the ladder it suggested we won 5. Doesnn't make sense

Saw the same thing.

I hope no-one uses that rubbish for betting.

Bet on winners, who are in form, with their best players playing well, otherwise forget it.

we play west coast twice(Subi, MCG), richmond(MCG), port(MCG), essendon(MCG) and fremantle(MCG). These are the only games we are capable of winning. Of these games Port and Essendon should beast us, but an upset isnt out of the question. Hopefully, by the time we play fremantle and richmond again we put the cue in the rack and Watts, Cheney, Maric, Strauss, Bennell, Jetta are all playing in the same team

I'd like to beat Carlton in rd 21 -- they should by then have (as Tommy Hafey would say) heads as big as boarding house puddin's -- & cost them a spot in the top 4.

actually id like to lose...in so much as returning the favour ;) let them get there under false steam and get blown away

Yeah I noticed the same thing. Wrote an email to the guy who runs it. His explaination is that the total predicted number of wins for the season is an accumulation of the percentage chances for a win in each game. So for example, 33% predicted chance to win on week plus 33% for the next plus say 34% for the next all adds up to 100% or in other words, one win.

So Melbourne have five wins predicted because all the percetage chance of us winning over the next 16 rounds adds up to about 5 wins.

If that makes sense.

And yeah, I wouldn't use that website for betting.

yeh thats just flawed logic because you don't add the percentages/ for example if we are 25% of winning against team A, and 25% chance of winning against team B the next round, that doesnt mean we are 50% chance of winning one of these games. is my logic right mathematicians out there?

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
