Lay off Jones!!!

...

My gut feeling is that in a few years time, Jones will mature both physically and mentally, making him much harder to tag out of a game.  He will also hopefully be our third or fourth best midfielder instead of our #1, meaning the opposition wont be able to afford him the same kind of attention they did last year.  He'll be a fearsome player as a result, and alot of the people criticizing him now will be singing his praises.

Fantastic, insightful post.

We could just about close this thread now.

jones gets alot of the ball, they need to teach him how to flick the handpass quickly like greg williams, but obviously he needs players running past him to receive it,he to slow to take them on, when he masters that he will be more than a handy player.

Is that a joke occo?

Can the expletives be edited off????

And I'm with those wondering where this came from. Haven't heard any Jones bashing in ages.

I reckon that Jones could be a pretty handy AFL player especially if he stays inside and doesn't try to be the reciever where oppositions players that are faster than he is just run around him (at under 18 level he had a huge amount of handball recieves) . He's still got improvement in him because he only just turned 21 and I think he will have a pretty good year this year (though I havn't seen any of the preseason so far).

For me the question is if Melbourne can have Moloney, Jones, Mclean and possibly Valenti all in the same team. The first 3 were recruited at a time when we were considered skilled but too soft in the midfield. So first effectively first round draft choices in 2003, 2004 and 2005 were used to draft these types of players so it was obviously a priority. Perhaps the balance has gone the other way now..

I'm pretty keen on the idea of getting players that have a good all round game if possible.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the season and watching Jones and the other younger guys running around.

Hopefully we'll belt the swans and Jetta, Grimes, Jones, Morton, Bartram, Dunn, Bate, Strause, Petterd, Frawley, Cheney and Spencer all give use a bit of hope for the future.

Bump.

I was trawling through some old posts about Jones and came across the above - it's a small snippet of a post by a poster named two sheds jackson.

I didn't know the guy but he was great value on here and had 299 posts that many of us wished could be more. He wrote eloquently about his cancer here: http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/16543-cancer/

But the eternity of the internet allows us to know a little bit of a great person and you should read that OP in the above link.

Incredibly heart-wrenching. I can't believe I haven't seen that thread before. He was spot on about Jones. RIP mate.

I've been reminded of two things from this thread and have one question:

- two sheds was an excellent poster who had a way with words. RIP

- occo was an horrendous poster. Definitely don't miss him.

- what ever happened to Rojik of the Arctic? Definitely one of the more curious usernames I've ever seen. Edit: oh, he was banned for something. Never mind.

Thanks for bringing this up rpfc. Two sheds was certainly a valuable contributor to the site and his words about Nathan Jones so prophetic.

I also didn't realise what an idiot occo was. A few weeks after he posted that garbage about Jones, occo was banned from the site for 12 months for a totally unrelated indiscretion. I thought at the time that 12 months was a tough stretch but as I recall, no remorse was shown at the time. Now, 3½ years on, I think it was the right decision.

In any event, this thread highlights the good, the bad and the ugly of the Internet and two sheds Jackson was definitely a good one.

People on these sites are so fickle. Yes, Jones had a mediocre year in '08. He was recognised by the opposition as our main midfield ball winner and tagged mercilessly. Think back to that game against Freo where we came back from 51 points down (I have this recorded and watch every few weeks). Crowley was almost carnal in his close attention. The fact is that Jones had a cr*p year in '08 and this year he will be back. He is one of our most desperate hard at it ball winners and you can't teach this instinct. There'll come a time when you are all singing his praises again. Mark my words!

who's critical of Jones? did you have a bad dream?

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
