An article in the sunday paper said that the Dees are considering naming our pick 1 a few days earlier than draft day. It is an interesting idea that will generate a lot of publicity. It certainly won't change draft day for any more than 60 seconds.

What do Demonlanders think of the idea?

I think they should keep it low key myself. Keep the other clubs guessing and a little anxious. What or how could they benefit from naming the pick, 72 hours earlier?

If they've seriously done their homework on all the kids to be drafted, they should sit back and watch the other recruiters sweat it out on draft day.

It's a great idea. Create as much hype as possible. Watts has a level head and will thrive on the challenges that come with no. 1.

This club needs all the positive exposure it can get. Give him the no. 4 jumper as part of the event.

It certainly is a way to get as much publicity as possible out of the number 1 pick.

After draft day, there'll be 80 kids paraded round as the messiahs of our club, why shouldn't we have ours on our own?

I just heard on SEN that Melbourne has asked the AFL to allow us to announce our number 1 draft pick at a sponsor's function on Thursday. I'm not sure what's more important, the number 1 pick being named, or the possibility that this might be the naming of our new sponsor.

By the way, I'm guessing the AFL won't allow us to name our number 1 pick early. NAB has sponsorship rights to the draft on Saturday, and they won't want the hype and excitement of the number 1 pick being removed from draft day. Plus I reckon the AFL will say something like 'it will hurt the integrity of the drafting process'. I'd rather we waited until Saturday.

Going by a post over at demonology it looks like we are having a draft preview night Thursday night from a Volvo dealership and the foundation hero's have been invited.

If this is when we intend to announce the decision then i'm all for it. It's good for Volvo from a sponsors point of view and it gives those people who pitched in significant money in the debt demolition campaign a little something extra for their money.

Could Volvo be a chance to step up to major sponsor next year?

It's a Mates of Melbourne function.

Anyone around here going?

I dont see why we would have to request the AFLs permission to say who we are taking. And if that person just so happens to be at the event as well what a coincidence. It wont make any difference if we announce early I would think as the top 2 will be the same regardless just in reverse order.

I am all for it but in saying that Vlad and his croneys will find some reason to stop us once again.

You may be right with your assertions about the AFL, but why do YOU want us to wait til saturday ?

Do you work at the NAB ?

Ha! I wish...

No, I just feel as though it can wait until draft day. I don't really have any specific reasons. I don't think it matters either. But if it was up to me I think it can wait.

I think its a brilliant idea & really would appeal to a major sponsor, giving them maximum possible exposure on the announcement, rather than just a footnote article.

Its really using our resources to their full potential.

If the AFL have a problem with it, too bad. We would only be announcing our 'intention' to take Watts (or someone else).

FWIW i think the AFL would gladly go along with it because its a positive step for our club & it is in their best interests for us to return to prominence.

But besides that, can you imagine Eddie getting worried about what the AFL would think if the scum had the first pick?

No. And neither should we.

They do allow clubs to announce who they will take in the PSD starting with the first pick as those players are then allowed to begin training with the club that nominated them. The club is then bound to take that player.

As you said Shaft, it would only be the announcement of "an intention". It would not be the actual pick.

I note that journos are continually probing clubs to find out who they may select. This could be used as a major publicity exercise especially if it was combined with an announcement of a major sponsor or even an additional second tier sponsor.

Now there's the starting point for a very interesting thread.

I think its been discussed ad nauseum in the past anyway.

I remember writing a long winded post to that effect... might have been in conjunction with the whole West Sydney plan, but it was a few months ago

How? Massive positive publicity and exposure for our Club before the draft wraps, when the public are inundated with draft news and views on each Club (with positive hype for all).

Other recruiters will have a ranking of all players in the draft and will choose their highest-ranking player that's still available so I don't see that it'd make much difference.

I certainly don't see that we'd lose much competitive advantage in naming the pick a little early.

What if he was hit by a tram between the announcement and the draft process?

This'd be the tricky bit.

I am sure that if we are told it would be published immediately.

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but i was the one that started the thread on Demonology on Friday.

I am not sure how to post a link, but it is at http://demonology.midnight.net.au/ titled "MFC Draft Preview Night - Inside Word".

In it i stated:

The Mates of Melbourne group are having a National Draft Preview Night next Thursday night with Barry Prendergast speaking about what our club needs in the upcoming draft, which the invite promotes as the "Inside Word on the Draft".

All Foundation Hero members have been invited and they have been told they can bring guests.

Guess who got a guernsey?

BOOYAR!!!

The night is to be held at one of the Volvo dealerships to promote one of their new cars.

I have a feeling that the MFC might do a first and name the number 1 draft pick that night.

It would be a great promotion for one of our sponsors and it would certainly generate a lot of much needed positive press for the club.

I just pray it is Jack Watts they name, whether it is Thursday night or Saturday at 10.01am.

I now can't wait for Thursday night.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
