Leadership Group for '09

I think Brock McLean is ready for the role we've been grooming him for since 2006. He shows leadership on and off the field, He's a dominant player when out there, he seems to have a really tight connection with most of our playing group and most importantly I think Brock McLean loves the Melbourne Football Club (His $10,000 donation really shows this).

Vice Captain: Matthew Whelan, James McDonald.

Extended Leaders: Brent Moloney, Cameron Bruce & Brad Miller.

You thinking that Green has/will be traded? And Whelan and Moloney are yet to sign new (if any) contracts.

You're a touch early.

Precisely, Mono.

Let's revist later when we know the final list.

I think in many ways its all bets off regarding leadership at present. I think Bailey is more intent on simply gettig a bunch of blokes who supposedly can play football..to do exactly that, but properly...and all the time !!

I have no doubt the tasks and efforts that Bailey has in mind for the list once it starts back will naturally elevate the leaders. No sense prejudging and/or limiting the potential of the group by prematurely annointing anyone.

A welcome distraction IMO, and leaders and potential leaders are so irrespective of what club they're at in 2009.

Health Warning: Opinion may contain adult themes, predictions of the future.

C:McLean VC: Whelan, Green EL: Moloney, McDonald, Miller (edit: and the best off-season trainer aged under 21)

:)

OK, lets speculate anyway;

C: McLean - tough club and on-field leader who knows how to play the game. Players and supporters respect him.

VC: from Green, McDonald - guts.

EL: Miller, Moloney, Whelan, Bell, Bruce - and determination.

Based on what? Hope? ;)

Pretty much.

I dont see why the club would let three very important players go. Maybe 1 of the 3. Green if anyone will leave.

I prefer

I'm with ya on this one. With the players nominating the leadership group, it becomes a popularity contest, especially when a quarter of the list are new to the club, and wouldn't have the faintest idea about the leadership qualities of their teammates.

The coaching department should select the captain, VC and DVC, and be done with it.

I like this method too, but its not the way it works sadly.

I too want 1 captain and one VC

Captain for 2009 and beyond is Brock Mclean

Vice Captain for 2009 is- Brad Miller

Agreed. Voting for leadership group encourages factions I think. These guys are young and often not particularly mature. Leaders will naturally stand up, and will be looked up to

Who says the players will be voting for a leadership group again? Given that the coaching staff changed the leadership group by the end of the year (Moloney, Rivers, Davey, Green in, Robertson, Yze, Neitz out), I reckon that this year's leadership group will just carry through.

Green

Bruce

McDonald

Moloney

Rivers

Davey

McLean

Miller

To follow the herd, my C/VC/DVC model:

C: Green

VC: McLean

DVC: Miller

Posted

Captain: Mclean (would be just as happy with Green)

Vice Captain: Green

Deputy Vice Captain: Miller

Leadership group (because there will be one)

Mclean, Green, Miller, Jmac, Bruce, Rivers.... Robbo will probably sneak in too.

Also would probably expect Davey and Moloney to get in.

I'm kinda of sick of these leadership groups...and that overrated company Leading teams?.

Make Brock Captain. Don't go the soft option and do Bruce/Jmac.

I agree we must make our youth lead. Green, Bruce and Junior have missed the leadership boat if Bailey chooses 1 of those 3 then it will just be another gutless decision and I won't be too happy.

I agree with the youth policy, time is up for the older boys. The leadership group should be made up of youngsters with BROCK MCLEAN leading the way. He has shown this season why he deserves it and he has learnt from his mistakes at the beginning of the season.

For all those who think green should be captain, you are wrong. Green is not a capable leader and isn't the one who will stand up in a fightback. I reckon he has tried to play for the captaincy this year and this has resulted in a good year, we should not give him the captaincy over one good year.

BROCK FOR CAPTAIN IN 09' , but i reckon bruce and macca will keep the captaincy in 09' and then brock will get his chance in 10'

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
