  3. I have been really impressed with his game in the last 4 or so weeks since he has gone to the half back position. His kicking and decision making has been excellent. He is quote attacking on often takes on the diagonal kick across the center lane that creates goal scoring options. He also is quite calm with the ball in hand and prepared to hold onto it rather than just dish off which often just creates problems (hibbo does it a bit). Neat side step too.

  4. The article didn’t suggest the Dees should trade Oliver, but rather the Gold Coast should target him... there’s a big difference. If I were in charge of an horrendously underperforming side, I’d make overtures to ANY talented player also

  5. Now they can write the same article on the Pies and suggest clearing DeGoey and Stevenson to the Suns.

  7. TRAINING Tuesday 9 July Mood was subdued. Out in three squads, VFL , AFL and the rehab. Braydon Preuss unseen, Jake Melksham running laps, Max Gawn getting time tested (running freely), Jack Viney on light duties, Tim Smith and Billy Stretch running laps. The younger players in the VFL squad are all matched with experienced players, Brendan McCartney directing traffic. Toby Bedford and James Jordan looking good as was Corey Wagner. Jake Lever vocal, Oscar Baker moving well as was Oscar Mcdonald. The AFL squad drill with a soccer game, then move to some serious goal kicking of 35 meters out then some bananas. Kyle Dunkley looks ready to go again. Kade Kolodjashnij working with the AFL squad or it could have been Michael Hibberd wearing his number. The run lasted less than an hour, on a beautiful Melbourne morning.

  8. See, you say you can separate out long-term disappointment from enjoying the moment, then go on to list all the long-term disappointments that sour short term enjoyment for you. And your last two paragraphs are just a laugh really. You seem to think I’m unaware that this hasn’t been a good year. I’m aware. I can’t wait for it to be over. I look to each coming game with a trepidation that was pleasantly absent last year. I can only bloody hope we will be able to turn it around. Still enjoyed Sunday’s game.

  9. All good points Bin. There was a critical intercept contested play in the match against the Dockers back of the square also where Jones found a side step through traffic and busted the game open through the middle. Pretty sure it resulted in a goal and a slight cushion at the time for some breathing space. Weighted averages from the last 3 rounds also confirm your observation about recent form...up 3% on last season's average score. Might have found a bit of a niche at HB (allows Fritsch to go forward also?)... *Number in parenthesis denotes number of matches played in this block.

  11. Jordon's put up some high disposal games since shifting from the backline to the midfeld/forward rotation at Casey, but I'm not sure that means he's anywhere near a debut. With a late December birth date, skinny frame and limited TAC exposure he'll probably be better off just playing the year out at Casey. He's not going to get midfield time in the AFL team and we might have enough backline options for the rest of the year. Maybe if they give Dunkley a couple more games and if he then goes back to the VFL you could give Jordon a go but too many young guys at once if they haven't really bashed the door down at VFL level is a recipe for failure.

  12. I respectfully disagree. Nathan Jones deserves at least 1 or even 2 more AFL seasons. He should retire when he is ready to do so. It is important for club culture that we look after our veterans and treat them with the respect they deserve. Nathan Jones was the small glimmer of light during the dark days from 2008 until 2013. We have a history of mistreating veterans. Such as James McDonald, Adem Yze, Cameron Bruce and even Brad Green. James McDonald could of played over 300 games for the Demons and certainly Adem Yze could of too. Cameron Bruce could of played well over 250 games for us and Brad Green could of played another season or two. I genuinely hope Nathan James plays over 300 games and beats David Neitz's games record. I also hope Nathan Jones get a chance to play in a winning Melbourne Demons Premiership in either 2020 or 2021. Nathan Jones truly deserves it. He is a legend of our club and deserves to be treated like one.

  13. We were 3 short on the bench. With a game that has so many rotations I was not suprised Carlton came back. They did the same to Freo the previous week. Fortunantly we were able to muster up what was required in the end. A bit of luck doesn't hurt either. I took a lad from Spain to see his first game ever. He knew nothing about the game. Going home he didn't want to stop talking about what he just witnessed.

  15. Sigh... Hasn't it been "put to bed" that Smith's OP was unrelated to being put back on the ground? If that's correct, your shortlist might be of the candidates who are not knowledgeable enough to do the job.

  16. Yeah right. The one guy who kept his job in the FD under 3 different regimes (Neeld, Roos, Goodwin), and is leaving under his own volition to go overseas. Worth noting that while Misson has been head-hunted a couple of times over a career in the AFL that goes back to 2001, he has never been sacked or "moved on".

  17. His best kick of the day was a lovely change of direction and hit up to Tommy Mc early in the 2nd who spilt a soda. I worry his legs aren't always getting him out of trouble, he doesn't spoil with any real technique and the lack of confidence to kick the penetrating kick to May on the switch just before half time was a worry. Overall though he looks capable enough to get another year as back flanker who might fall out of the side. He also had a crappy preseason, no reason with a better preseason with the team healthy around him he can't get better next year.

  19. Agreed on the +2.5 match score in soccer ... reckon we'll do alright once the round-ball game starts up. The value is when it's good team vs good team ... and the dominant teams at home are often free scoring teams so it's not that risky a bet. And there are a number of baseball games not listed by Laddies and those games not listed quite often involve a dominant home team with a pitching advantage. Happens a lot. Barty is still no.1 despite going out in the 4th round and the US Open will now be her next big target. Good player.

  20. Yes we have total different views on what we expect. I have no idea of your age DJ but I suspect you a lot less than me if on that basis I am correct I used to have the same view as yourself but the MFC after 5 decades has battered me into submission. The MFC has been irrelevant for the best part of two decades and from my view only a couple of premierships over the next decade will change that but sadly I don't see that happening. I still enjoy watching my teams and go to as many Casey matches as I can. That is my enjoyment these days. So when we win I enjoy it and I really enjoyed last year however that is probably it for this decade however who knows what the next holds.

  21. Frankly I thought our first half was worse than our second, and I said so many times. I fully respect the rotation situation and the injuries, but I witnessed a first half with a full team riddled with horrible ball use, poor decision making and atrocious goal kicking against a terrible side. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a win, and I have no issue with the players or supporters celebrating. I just don't seem to enjoy wins at this stage of the season, against poor sides, when finals are out of the question. I rather concentrate on the things that need improving, which yes, are negatives, and see where our improvement is going to come from. To me beating Carlton by under a goal is not where the improvement or hope for next year lies. Just as I don't ever have a go at anyone celebrating wins, I expect others to do the same when the reverse is true. We all look at things from different perspectives, and mine is firm. I only care about playing and winning finals, and premierships. Small incremental wins do not thrill me. This is not 2016. We should be a long way away from talking about whether a 5 point victory against Carlton should be a point of celebration as we stare down a bottom 4 finish. As Nasher said, some people can enjoy the small wins along the way. I did too until finals were no longer on the cards. Now all I see is a team broken by injuries, lacking skills and a relevant game plan, and struggling against bottom feeders, which is sadly now also where we find ourselves. Again.
