These comments suck guys. I understand why you might be skeptical and sure theres a chance he might not pull it off. But he's asked us, the supporters to back him in. He is a contracted player that has been through a hell of a lot and he bleeds red and blue. Look how much faith geelong has put into menzel. He had so much time out of the game. Whether the menzel gamble pays off I don't know, but my morals tell me to back jack.8 points

This is less surprising than recruiting him in the first place was. Best of luck to the guy - I think it takes guts to move away from an established career to the uncertainty and risk of pro footy. Don't reckon he will be too sore about it - can now say he gave it his best shot.7 points

Laverde is a chance to go high because gws have 3 picks and the pies have pick 5. The obvious ones are petracca and Brayshaw. It's been interesting to read people's opinions on Brayshaw on highlights packages alone. I haven't looked at them. I think he will be a very good player. Has all the necessary skills to be a decent player in the beames type mould. No nonsense, kicks well on both feet, good tackler, gets his own ball in contests, takes 1v1marks and kicks goals from set shots and general play. He is the pure mid type I'm talking about. Plays mostly on the ball in all the contests. I really like ahern. He is also a pure mid. Has a bit of breakaway speed and uses it pretty well. Can rack up some good numbers very quickly. It's no surprise his team fell away in the granny after he copped a big head knock. He was probably best on until that stage. I don't think he will go top 3. I think Carlton might have picked him if they had kept pick 7. Duggan and Ellis play mostly mid for the same team as laverde. I've seen a fair bit of those 2. They are both skilled players. Ellis played more half back for metro. Heeney looks like a gun. I prefer mids that are on the move at a bounce, ball-up or throwin. Heeney is constantly moving. A good example of the is jones when he was younger as compared to viney. Viney is always moving. Jones was stationary a lot in the early years. He got in the right position but was stationary and easy to tackle. He got tackled heaps in his early years inside the contest. Fyfe is another example of someone on the move in the contest. Heeney moves like this. Not surprised we bid pick 2 on him. I've only seen weller play a couple of times. It's hard to rate the non-big footy states now because they don't play the best teams. He seems to be a pretty good package. The draft this year is a little different to some years because there are heaps of taller guys that should go early. The best picks imo will be mostly talls with some utilities and petracca and Brayshaw. Just on a side note. I believe gws will continue to be raidable. If we pick mids, it's possible we may be able to get another key forward from them over the next 2 years. If they end up with McCartin or wright they may end up options in 2 years anyway. Just my opinion.7 points

i don't see how a one year rookie list player could possibly described as a list clogger i know the english language gets mangled a lot but that is a bridge too far7 points
-
Really? We needed him while Garland was out injured and we would have needed him again if one of the defenders went down injured. I thought he did his job pretty well. List clogger? I hate this term. What harm or "clogging" was he doing sitting on the rookie list. Will trust Roos and co's judgments on all these things of course and this decision is small fry in the scheme of things... but I think Alex deserves a bit more credit than that!7 points

I've seen you draw long bows before WYL, but this one takes the cake. Keeping him will cement us at the bottom. Letting him leave and picking up someone at pick 53 will move us up into the 8.. Absolute horseshit. The good AFL clubs carry good football people because not only do they know that when they're back, they'll play good footy, but because they build the culture. The part of our club that's pathetic. Menzel, Max Bailey & LRT are all examples of players in the last 3 years.. From teams in the top 4... Insane.6 points

I've spoken about melbourne not taking pure midfielders whilst drafting for a number of years. The ones we did take are trengove, scully (at the time, but probably too small as he hasn't really put on any weight), gysberts (was just too lazy). We have taken some wingers such as Morton and blease, halfbacks and half forwards such as bennell, tappscott and Strauss. The rest have been players like watts, cook, McDonald and other talls not really around anymore. Plus a couple of rucks. I would debate that we have completely neglected our midfield. I mean guys that go and get the footy. The last 2 drafts and trade period they have attempted to rectify this. Some not as profitable as others and some of the younger ones we will see. For years we forgot that you are suppose to have the football before the flashy players can use it. We need to address our midfield in a big way because imo players like Evans and m jones aren't contributing to winning. Geelong won their early flags with an average to ok forward line but had a brilliant midfield and backline. We have the makings of an ok forward line at the minute but its hard to judge when the ball goes in there 20 to 30 times a game and was very slow ball movement last year. I've commented on laverde already and I don't believe he is a player we have the luxury of picking at the minute. He could be a very good player but he could be a fail as well. His u/18s side has some very good mids who can get the ball and he seems a bit of icing. I have seen him play about 10 games live. I wouldn't pick him in the first 3. It's too risky imo and we really need to get high draft picks right. I would pick ahern before him for us in our current position. Not that I think ahern will be top 3.6 points

You might find this surprising, but when you delist someone, you have to replace them, and you can't just take players from opposing team's playing lists. We clearly don't have the best list right now, but chopping everyone and replacing them with VFL players and kids isn't going to help either. List management is a long game.5 points

Thanks Alex for your efforts at MFC. Far from the worst at Melbourne in 2014. He will be welcomed back with open arms at Norwood. Very good SANFL defender. Our captain, Kieran Mc Guiness (ex-Bulldogs), retired after two premierships. So there is a spot in the backline for a "cool head". From the NFC website GEORGIOU TO RETURN TO THE PARADE 23/10/2014 2:26:42 PM In some exiting news for the Redlegs, former Norwood Football club vice-captain and state team representative Alex Georgiou has today agreed to terms on a two year deal pending another offer of an AFL contract in the National or pre-season drafts. Alex made the following statement today. “I really look forward to returning home to Norwood if I am not given the opportunity at another AFL club. I have missed the NFC environment both on & off the ground and I am keen to play my role whilst we strive for further success”. The club is fortunate to have a dual premiership player coming back into the club and looks forward to everything Alex brings to the table.4 points

I am surprised at how many want us to deviate from the "best available" philosophy. We need midfielders but we cannot pass up the chance to draft a great player just because he hasn't played as a mid at u18 level. Best available is relative, but I want our recruiters to draft the players that in their educated opinion are most likely to become champions. We have positions available all over the park. NB: Nathan Fyfe was drafted as a forward.4 points

Was a fairly limited player really and with Lumumba and Frost coming in, plus T McDonald another year older and Howe acquitting himself capably in defence, I'm not surprised. But as you say, terrific 1 year experience for the fella, and I'm sure he wouldn't regret a thing. Worth asking, could his delisting point to interest in the PSD or DFA markets?4 points

What a sad lot we are. Here we are getting all warm and moist over Brayshaw which I suppose is fair enough, yet his highlights reel is no better than JT's , or his credentials better , yet on the other hand many here are ready to burn him at the stake 'finished' they say. Finished, trade him, get him out of the joint is the implication. I find it disappointing we aren't prepared to give this kid more than a fair go because that's what he tried to do for us, more than likely when he was battling his own issues. Hasn't run off for 20 pieces of silver , took on the captaincy, thrust into the headlights and never waivered at a time was in real trouble. Love him, love his spirit and I really hope that he shoves it up a few backsides on here.4 points

Not finished. He's had surgery again to fix the problem. It will see him likely miss all of 2014, but theoretically if we were challenging for finals he'd be back around August/September. I doubt that will be the case though. For those saying he's finished, I spoke with a player last night and asked how devastated Jack was etc etc. He said he was most devastated that previous to reinjuring it, he ran his fastest 3k & repeat sprints since draft camp. He felt like he regained a lot of speed that he didn't have in the years gone by. To me it suggested these foot problems were the reasoning behind his lack of speed, and hopefully when he's back in the red and blue he will show that on the field. He know he has the football ability, his first year proved that... He just need his body right.4 points

GREAT NEWS! Looks like we will get the ANZAC Eve game vs Richmond: "Richmond and Melbourne also appear to have been successful in their joint push to play each other on the eve of Anzac Day, with the Tigers hosting what both clubs hope will become a regular fixture on the night of April 24. Next year that game falls on a Friday night". http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/tigers-to-play-14-home-and-away-games-at-mcg-in-2015-20141023-11at1h.html Would love to see Eddie's face as he vigourously fought this suggestion!! Would expect us to host in alternate years. Really excited for our club on getting this fixture going!3 points

ASADA rejects AFL players requests Wow... I think they are digging a deeper and deeper hole for themselves at Essendon: While all claim to represent the interest of the players and/or Australian sport, the advice as to remedial actions varies dramatically. In my role as protector of clean athletes in Australia, my advice to them is that if they want to act in the best interest of the players they should review the 12,000 pages of evidence and follow the due process. I only wish that such interest in player welfare had been present in 2012.3 points

Did you know that draftees who are in their first draft get an automatic 2 year contract? So there's a spanner in your plan. A simpler spanner would be the issue of never knowing exactly who your 'bottom 6' players are for certain, and that sometimes humans surprise you and Neville Jetta says 'hi'... Our forward line is fairly average and I don't like stats for stats sake but geez - what a horrible set of numbers they are We were last for inside 50's in the league by a fair margin. Swans got the ball into their forward half on average 24 times more a game than we did !! We were last for marks inside 50 by a fair margin. PA took on average 7 more marks inside their forward 50 per game than we did. We were last for shots on goal by a fair margin. The Hawks average 10 more goals than us a match. I believe we need everything but it is fairly hard to take a mark or kick a goal in our forward half if it is not getting in there. I'm a believer in pick 2&3 being a mid and a mid. Don't ask me who they should be as I will leave it those more knowledgeable than me.3 points

Arrow, I liked your post because it was full of positivity and excellent news which indicated the issue of JT's drop in pace and overall performance was directly attributed to the navicular injury. However, it raises a couple of questions I'd like answered if possible. From news report; It was only reported a fortnight ago after the failed trade to Richmond that Jack was only out running for about two weeks prior. "This is obviously devastating news for Jack and we will seek further advice from surgeons for a plan moving forward so he can return to playing football," Demons football manager Josh Mahoney told the club website. "Jack had been progressing well ... and (eight weeks ago) was given the all-clear from the surgeon to progress to the next phase of his program. I struggle to comprehend how after only two weeks off the de-load treadmill and running outside that Trengove is given license to run his backside off and pull PB 3km's and repeat sprints. I cannot see how any rehab program would allow that! Also, if this was in fact the case, why would the MFC put him up for trade knowing that they've cured he foot issues of a very good player and former Captain that when up and about would add value to the team. The story of JT being the missing piece of an A grader puzzle is plausible but still purely based on rumour to the best of my knowledge. Do I have the time line mixed up here? According to my calculations, Trengove was only fully off the de-load treadmill a fortnight before trade period. Hope that made sense. Cheers3 points

From a personal view I thought Georgiou gave up a lot and had a good crack at it and was important in making the team competitive early in the year. From a critical list management view: 187cm key defender with poor skills. Came in and did a job for us whilst Garland was injured and Frawley/Dunn were forward but the reality was he was only ever going to be depth. Why carry depth with limited potential when you are a bottom 4 side? Tall defenders: McDonald, Frost Medium defenders: Dunn, Garland, Howe Swingman: Pedersen There's enough coverage there for 3, maybe 4 spots in the team. If we could get Mitch Brown from Geelong on the rookie list he has more ability than Georgiou, has the probably physical tools and can cover either end of the ground. Plus there's always a chance you can get his head switched on and he can actually make it as a long term player. He's just an example.3 points

He escapes immediate scrutiny on this thread (although he hasn't really 'escaped') because his contract runs for two more years. And BB - Nasher is saying, and I agree, that if we think he is 1% chance of playing again and we don't want him - simply delist him and help him with his recovery outside of football. No need to keep up appearances by promising anything more. If we, as a club, want to keep him and/or feel like the cultural hit of delisting him while under contract will be severe - then this decision is bloody tough. It isn't as simple as cozy sentiment, or whatever. Culture in footy clubs turn on a dime and we have seen toxic examples of bad culture at this club over the past few years, and even instances of poor list management bringing it on. It wasn't 'cozy sentiment' that led many to believe Junior should have been given another year or two - it was shrewd knowledge of the power of particular people in your locker room and how football clubs are made up of people and all the emotions that come with us.3 points

What jackaub and I want to know is, why weren't Clark and Hogan rookie-listed in 2014? Jeez, this club! soft-headed, soft-hearted, I dunno.3 points

That's all lovely Bub, but if I were St. Kilda I'd happily burn a spot on the rookie list for Jack Trengove if he nominated for the rookie draft. Even if you ignore all the so called "nicey nicey" stuff, the risk is by going down this path, you lose the player.3 points

Those who are concerned about the impact of the proposed Tiger Deal need only recall that O'Keefee was desperate to get to the Hawks, but the trade didn't eventuate then went on to win a Norm Smith.3 points

Horrible coaching, horrible culture, inept administration ( infighting and schisms), zero development, no ethos in the club that hard work is required for success - and we wonder why so many picks have failed. There is something to be said about the characters of some of these footballers as the likes of Nathan Jones has improved despite the obstacles thrown at him (the major one being the way our club was run in every facet) because of his character and determination to succeed. If we could only bottle what Jones has inside him and distribute it to all at the club.3 points

The "blackest day(s) in sport" were those days when 34 Essendon players were getting shot full of performance enhancing drugs!!!! It may be hard to comprehend because of the sheer size of the crime: 34 players from the one team have doped! This is crazy serious, we are not talking sport drinks or a "one off" jab to mend some injury, this was hard core world first team doping! Time we stopped with the namby pampy attitude, when one player dopes we want him hung when the whole team dopes we look for excuses and want to send them off for counselling! Not good enough! Time to harden-up chaps we are already the laughing stock of world sport!!!2 points
