Announcements are about ensuring you have maximum media exposure, I respect Roos for the position on the B&F, it is the absolute closure for 2013 and to thank Neil Craig for his efforts in what has been hell. You then enter into the first week of the finals, the media is all over this from Friday to Monday, 11am Tuesday Roos with his Wife and Family enter the long room for the press conference. The MFC then dominates the media all afternoon Tuesday, Wednesday and if we play the media right announce Ling as his assistant on Wednesday afternoon so we get Thursday as well. Roos and Ling then continue their media for Friday till the following Monday and all of the sudden the MFC has hijacked the media for the second week of the finals. Or the other side he comes out on Friday and closes the door stating he will not coach us. There are two things that we have to applaud the club for firstly, chasing the man they want and hopefully getting him and secondly until Roos went on the TV last Friday no one outside Roos and the Club had any idea that we were still talking, considering he had met our leadership group last week this is a great effort to keep it all under wraps. The old administration would have had it all through the media.10 points

I find this all very interesting. My understanding from within the club (those who really care who can stroll through 177 pages and read my previous posts) is that Paul Roos has indicated to the club that he will be our coach next season. It is also my understanding that he has not yet signed. I know as a fact the Roos has been in communications with MFC since R2 and that despite what he has said publically has remained in communications with the club during this time. That's almost 6 months! I believe Paul Roos is a man of outstanding character, but it is clear from the charade that he is not speaking as absolutely and out-right honestly as he claims. For example it is a fact that he publically said he had no interest in coaching Melbourne whilst in discussions with PJ................. but knowing this he always left the door just a little open. As I have said before PJ and the board has always maintained confidence they would get their man. The reason for the final delay is interesting. It could be Roos waiting for final confirmation of AFL assistance, it could be fine details on the structure of the club and his ultimate power, it could be family as stated (however I don't believe so), it could be a respect thing with Craig and the season that has been, it could be details on his contract. Nevertheless, I don't believe for one second that this master of the press would have knowingly rehashed this story if he was not intending to take the role. All I am saying is don't take his words on face value, with Roos you need to read between the lines and the writing between the lines reads positively.10 points

As anxious as I am about this I know he will sign - this 'charade' just seems to me to be more about Roos' desire to use whatever (probably legitimate sticking point he has) to push the decision out and make it look like he didn't just 'do a Hird' and lie about not wanting to coach for a year then have a presser out of nowhere. And I also think he wants to avoid the Bluey. I would too, in fact, if I was Jackson I would not announce anything. Have whispers to all the tables but don't have a 'reveal.' It would be cringeworthy as the masses act as if we won the flag and start singing the song as Roos stands there awkwardly and makes a speech about getting better next year with a quarter of the players in the room knowing they won't be there. If Roos wasnt taking the job he would have simply said No by now. He would appreciate the position we are in and that things need to move on etc. If he wasnt part of the picture of Melbourne going forward , then we'd be doing just that , moving on with things. Strangely thats not the case, Logic suggests the reason8 points

LOL I didn't look here for 5.5 hours and there was about 240 new posts to read like most, I think this is the case at hand: deal is done. Perhaps not on paper but done. PJ stage management decrees that official announcement occurs at the exact right moment that moment is not right now therefore some time has to be bought with some excuse therefore the 'family discussion' line is trotted out. It makes no sense that he would not have already established the family situation by now, that would have been the first box ticked (after how many dumptrucks full of cash do I get, of course). As if he would have made all this gather steam without having it ticked first, that would be moronic. Also having 40,000 ppl mad at your family is not the wisest thing to do. He may have needed some other assurances to do with our finances, staff, draft picks etc assumedly PJ and the AFL have given him this and it's done with now. The amount of media ppl and others on this forum with their 'sources' is just overwhelming now... even with our collective MFCSS there are only about 2 posters even holding out. The discussion around assistants doesn't interest me for 2 reasons: a) Roos will know exactly what he's doing and b) just the fact he is who he is should mean we can get whoever we want unlike having to pick scraps off like the floor like we have had to the last 7 years. His price as many have pointed out is a moot point becuase he will pay it all back in spades My friends we may get to the point again where we are proud of our club and attend games optimistically. We may even like some of our players. We may even be able to heap carp on our Essendon/Collingwood/Carlton mates after a win. The players at this moment would be hammered at a bar somewhere, on this strength of this news just getting pumped for next year already. No more unknown assistants to guide them, we have the real McCoy - the guys like Frawley and Jones that have been around a while must be thinking geeeez it's about time! EFFING excited PS: Round 1 2014 at the MCG please7 points

The football media are doing what they usually do - making it up as they go along and hoping they're right. As per Ross Lon to Freo, the majority of time they have no idea what's going on.6 points

Unless you know this for sure, please don't make these types of accusations. Trust this club to blow up a Roos deal because somebody set a dwarf on fire.6 points

In the Twitter era its all about being first, not right. The world moves so quickly now that no one remembers when false truths are uttered. This is precisely the reason semi literate knobs like Jon Ralph have managed to eek out a career.5 points

If Roos does sign why oh why didnt PJ come into our lives years ago. It could have saved us years of heartache. This man is a genius and has done so much positive stuff for this club. He goes and gets an awesome coach and makes hard decisions while our last CEO was focused on blazers and bugulars.4 points

Whoa, is that you Jon Ralph? This is what Roos actually said: "To be fair to the Melbourne Football Club, to the players and the members, you've got to be fully committed to doing it. It's now time for me to put up or shut up. You've got to say, 'Look, I definitely want to do it,' but clearly the family is first."4 points

My favourite stat: the "every game" player. Jumper numbers 2 and 45 were our only two for the year. Matt Jones proved the worth of ready made midfielders; he slotted right in and looked at home from minute one without needing the "grounding" time the young guys do. There's a lot to be said for having a body that is ready from minute one. If he can add some polish to his game he'll prove to be a real bargain. As for Nathan Jones - I wouldn't expect any less from him now. Not only is he our best midfielder, but he's also easily our most durable player. He's barely missed a game since his debut. While obviously nature plays a part, it's also a testimony to his professionalism and rigorous recovery practice. Well done lads.4 points

I love Demonland. I know when my family is overseas without me, I hate making huge life changing decisions when the possibility exists they may get caught up in a completely unpredictable extreme weather event. This is my nomination for post of the year.4 points

To think that Richmond has got to 5th by drafting Deledio, Cotchin, Martin and Conca ... all midfielders with first-round picks ... then topped up with Grigg and Houli, while we fiddle-faddled around with Morton, Gysberts, Scully, Watts and Cook, then topped up with Sellar, Meesen and Joel Macdonald. We didn't even pick the other Grimes. Shall I light the fuse?4 points

In I suppose typical MFC fashion, I'm ready for Roos to turn around and tell us to get stuffed. However my hopes are soaring, but I'm doing the best I can to stay grounded. It's like I'm 5 again and it's Christmas eve, except this time I won't be sleeping for the next week.3 points

I am still finding it hard to be totally excited about it cause of our past fart ups. When I see Roos in the presser with PJ I will be excited and at the same time relieved.3 points

Omg i wanna get excited but until i see him in a melbourne tie announcing he will be coach for the next five years then i remain um...3 points

I think a lot of people may misconstrue the value of any AFL money.. It's in effect totally irrelevant as to any condition on its use. Any dollar spent on the footy dept frees up a dollar elsewhere.. Its fiscal semantics made to appease the numnuts out there3 points

Though I think Jetta's position in the team is in jeopardy, he seems to have been winning more of the ball recently (particularly in Casey) and we saw how good he could be in a couple of situations on the weekend. That run he took through the middle, using some good evasive skills, was just great to watch. He may also have a better chance of being retained with Davey and Rodan retiring as he becomes the only real small forward/defender who can go through the midfield with skills that in some small way replicate what those two provided. Not to mention that he has had a lot of injuries over the years and has struggled to get a consistent run in the firsts thanks to those. I can't see Gillies being retained, nor Couch and Magner (as they have to be promoted to the senior list this year, or released I believe), with Tynan and Davis being the other two I think could be at risk. I think Sellar has showed enough to be a depth player and I would have him ahead of Davis and Gillies. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but regardless, I'm happy to wait until after a head coach is appointed.3 points

I am delusional? I am talking about hurt here - pain? Put Moloney, Rivers, and Petterd into our side and we will lose to people by 2 goals less than we would have and did. Again, those three into our 2013 side = our 2012 side. And they only have a few years left. This isn't defence of Neeld if some are going on the tangent of thinking that - I am simply saying that the loss of these three players, plus Morton, Gysberts, Martin, and Bennell, did not hurt the long term, or medium term outlook for the playing list.3 points

It makes me laugh how Channel 7 and others have talked about what is being proposed and how there are sources or sauces and the one thing PJ and others have brought to the club is the ability to do business negotiations in private. this is so unlike previous years. This shows a level of professionalism that gives me great hope for the club. It makes it harder for us supporter mind you but the saying is so true that lose lips sinks ships. Fremantle's poaching of Ross Lyons is a perfect example of getting the business done without having running commentary or it being played out in the media. The outrage many felt over the way it was done was from the media and i reckon the outrage was more in that Ross and Fremantle did it quietly with out any one working it out before they wanted. That's what makes it interesting that Paul Roos was the one to break the news and not MFC which to me speaks volumes about his intent. Loved the reaction of Eddie and Jason on the panel. Can't wait to hear the official news if and when it arrives.3 points

Lets see. $1.6m in 2014 Less $400k for Craig who may get Lions job. That's $1.2m balance. Conservatively lets say an extra 6000 members x$200 =$1.2m. He is now at zero having paid for himself. Hang on I forgot, extra sponsors, more foundation members and old ones topping up, more donors, that could be considerable amounts of money coming into the club. Makes sense on a purely commercial basis anyway you look at it. Hang on I forgot that maybe the team improves under him and then all those income streams keep increasing. Seems pretty sound to me.3 points

I'd like to also give Mark Neeld some credit for the players that have been brought into the club under his watch. For every Tom Gillies or Cameron Pederson, there's a Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes, Matt Jones, Dean Terlich, Dean Kent or Jesse Hogan. It's always the done thing to take a dump on everything a sacked coach has done, but I think history will show that Mark Neeld actually did lay some pretty good foundations for the club's future.3 points
