Best Current Player (Been the best)

Toss up between Neitz, White and Junior

Best player on our list

Again a toss up.... Rivers, McLean and Flash

Most potential

This category is tough.... In the few games we've seen of him, Cale Morton looks pretty bloody good!

Bate is another (with a few more lessons from Barry Dawson on the "Art of Speediness") who could amount to something special...

McLean once he gets his head screwed on straight will be an amazing hard-nut midfielder!

Honourable mentions to "Dunny", Jones and Petterd.

Best player I've seen

Robbie Flower is the obvious one!

But I would also like to add G.Lyon, Stynes and Viney

David Schwarz could've been anything if not for phucked up knees!

Most exciting player I've seen

Allen Jakovich!

David Schwarz, Jeff Farmer and Flash are a close second!

Players who are etched in my childhood memories

Rod Grinter!

Allen Jakovich...

And for some strange reason.... Ricky Jackson!

Great to have a positive thread!!

IMHO

1. Neitz: a true champion who bleeds for the the Club every week.

2. Rivers: undersized for a KPP, but reads the play so well and is rarely beaten. A 'general' down back and can only assume that he's not part of the current leadership group because he missed most of 2007.

3. Morton: oozes class. Also like what I read about Grimes ... sad that we won't be seeing him for a while.

4. R.D. Barassi: the premierships speak for themselves. Apologies to Alves, Wells, H.Mann, Flower, Lyon & Shwarz (before he did his knee).

Did you ever see Hart play? Its a big call

I agree with you about Flower.

I did. My dad was a Richmond supporter so i used to go with him every week when i was a young boy.

Fair enough.

Schwartz had one stellar year. Hart had many and had it not been for Carey and possibly Brereton would have been the best CHF I have seen.

Yeah, Dermie was pretty good. Had heaps more success than Carey. Just ask him about his 5 day and 5 night premierships. Bumped into Dean Jones in Red Rooster North Geelong after the Ashes Boxing Day Test and he started going thru the 200 he made in Madras!!! lol Peas in a pod.

1. Neitz

2. Wheatly (surprisingly), Rivers, Bruce.

3. Morton has the obvious potential. Very hopeful with Dunn, Bate, Jones and Brock.

4. Can only really comment on players from the late 80's therefore Jakovich, Stynes, Lyon and Schwarz (who unfortunately seems to be turning into a enourmous tool)

In light of Jeff White being named Melbourne's only representative in the Victoria/All-Stars game, and to counteract all the negativity going around in these forums, I'd like to ask who on our list:

A. Has been Melbourne's best player.

B. Is currently our best.

C. Has the potential to be our best.

David Neitz, Jared Rivers and Cale Morton, for mine. Thoughts?

BARASSI

BRUCE

JONES

These won't be popular:

1. Neitz (slightly ahead of Yze then White or Bruce)

2. Rivers (ahead of Bruce) - the only two I would be confident of getting games at other clubs at the moment

3. Morton (ahead of Dunn and McLean)

4. Flower - although I unfortunately only saw his latter years from memory(86 & 87)

I agree with all of that. I'd probably have McLean as my second choice for #2 with Bruce third.

Darren Kowal is etched in my childhood memory, but that's not what this thread is about hey?

Defintitely Schwarz and Jako during the positive formative years

3. Cale Morton (ahead of McNamara and Petterd)

4. Jim Stynes (ahead of Neitz and Schwarz)

1) David Neitz

2) Wheatly on current form

3) Morton or Jones but hopefully there is a large contest here

4) Flower but with special mentions to Stynes, Barrasi, Lyon and Schwarz (was watching a game from 94 before was massive and known as the 'Ox' the commentors called him "Rodoulph" because he called move so freely and quick, i found this amusing because of the contrast of names)

1. Neitz. He has giving us some awesome memories of the past, well, 15 or so years.

2. This is a pretty tough one.. I think that it's between Brock and Jones. When on song these two ooze leadership and hunger.

3. Morton by a mile. This kid is going to be something special.

4. I loved watching Lyon growing up, ditto with Stynes, but the Ox gave me the best memories.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
