"""KEEN to improve their standards of behaviour and professionalism, Melbourne's players have imposed a 1am curfew on themselves for attending bars and nightclubs.

Good to see :)

I would have thought it was just common sense for an AFL footballer to adopt that without having to make a public policy.

Then again common sense has been in short supply with some of the players.

To me all the policies in the world are useless unless they translate into professionalism and performance on the field.

I'd prefer the Club said nothing in this area, players avoid public minor misdemeanours and focus on playing top quality football when the season starts.

Meh. Instead of doing a 7pm-3am session, they'll probably make it a 5pm-1am session and still come away with the same result.

The story would've been more senstational if they were banning themselves from nightclubs during the season. Adelaide have sworn off grog - I think?

As Rhino says, there has been a hell of a lot of talk from the boys but not much action on the field to back it up so far.

*Cue for the apologists to remind us that its only practice matches*

Typically, they haven't quoted Neitz in full. They left out his last sentence:

Melbourne skipper David Neitz said yesterday that the curfew meant that the players must leave any nightclub or bar by 1am. "Basically, you need to be on your way home, looking for a taxi line but you're not to be in a nightclub or a bar at one o'clock," Neitz said. "You need to be out the front looking for a taxi and getting yourself home." "But if some b#stard tries to get in the taxi before you, you won't be punished if you snot them."

I think it's good, it leaves the club no wiggle room. Doesn't matter if its player 1 or player 38, if somebody is out late then they get done. The players have driven it in the wake of their own problems last year it says in the Age article, so its a pretty good response.

Puts it back on the players to do the right thing.

I have to admit thingking further on this. Given that they are supposedly elite athletes. Given they often have early morning requirements ( not everyday granted ) I would have thought 1 am a tad late. This means your often not back tucked up in beddy-byes til near 2 at this rate.

Call me an old fuddy duddy ( or whatever you prefer ..lol ) but I was always under the impression sportsfolk were a bit earlier to bed.

But as Hards puts it..its putting the onus back on the players. This is good.

I cannot believe grown men need a curfew. It doesn't wreak of professionalism, it wreaks of immaturity.

If you think 18-23 yr olds are grown men it's been awhile since you were that age. "Grown men" who have no responsibilites and bucket loads of cash = curfew needed to stay focused.

Will be interesting to see if Nieta is bouncing down Ackland st during the season at 1am after beers in St Kilda

I'm 21. They are grown men. They have a responsibility, and that's to be the face of an organisation that is struggling to develop a strong eye in the public. If they were determined enough for success, the curfew wouldn't be needed. Granted, successful clubs in the past have needed it, but we're in a different position. We are struggling, and this curfew shows that obviously plays weren't focused enough on their responsibilities

All clubs have an unofficial curfew whether they admit it or not

As soon as a player is involved in anything after around midnight he is hauled over hot coals for being out that late anyway and suspended more often than not.

Ok..i'll say it.. and draw the fire !!

you're 21..you think youre a grown man ?? Good for you.. I hope you enjoy your delusion

You ( one or collectively ) may well have on board much that will carry you on and through life. You will no doubt think your capable of taking upon yourself the responsibilities that we al lassociate with grown up. I have no doubt you think this, even think it with reasonable cause. I did once. I have no doubt many older amongst us here did too, but its a false dawn Im afraid to tell you.

You have grown up, but thats a distant cry from a grown man. What you have done is enter the real world ..in the big league.. Youre now a player....but a fledgling. At 21 you'll think youre as stret smart and canny as they come.. youve ridden some hard bumps and even picked yourslef of the ground a few times.

At 21 ... ...youre an apprentice grown up ;) some dont ever really qualify from that point !! :D

Ahh Grasshopper....at 21 youve only just begun !! :)

 Ha ha you made my night.

I think he means he's a grown man because he can legally do anything he wants, has done, and so is now experienced.

What you lack at 21 is REAL dedication, self control and persistance for a start. I won't go on, you can work the rest out as you go along like the rest of us, not because I have all the answers but, at your age your eyes have already glazed over and you are thinking. "What do you know"?

Anyway,

Is Brock McLean a grown man?

And another question. Is Wayne Carey grown man?

Back to the curfew thing. I like what clubs used to do in the old days. Set the 'good' players up with steady girls to keep them out of late night drinking holes. ;) It worked well for some but in reality that won't work for everyone anyway. The extroverts will always want to go where people are.

The coaches can play a role in getting players to bed on time by just scheduling a heavy training session the afternoon before the players have their day off and an early morning one the day after. <_<

is Wayne carey a grown man ? hmm .....the flaw is in the question !!

eyes are far from glazed over...strangely they become more aware as time go one...funny that.

Steady girls...and my outlook is dated?? lol

Along with doing what you apparently want..is the responsilblity for doing said same. There's no free lunch.

Dont confuse a grown body...with a developed mind !!

Toad 33, it seems like a good idea to set the good players up with steady girlfriends but this in itself could lead to serious intra-club friction.

The problem lies in the homogenous look of the majority of "footy girlfriend's". Blonde hair, shiny orange complexion, breast augmentations etc, compounded by the fashion to don wildly oversized sunglasses that hide their faces.

My god how confusing for our young tyro's. One could easily take his teamates girlfriend home and not cotton onto his error for weeks! :o

So, if we are going to set players up with steady girlfriends then we better be very very careful to mix in the odd brunette or redhead, or else it could be Arden St all over again!

Sorry B..bub my comments are questions were aimed at the 'C'boy not you.

I noticed he hasn't replied again since our comments. I wonder if his eyes are still glazed over?

Perhaps the Wayne Carey question was too mych? Perhaps I should re-phrase and ask a more apt question.

Is Wayne Carey a responsible adult?

Oh, now look what I have done. His eyes have glazed over again.

Keep up the good cheer.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
