Sampi Will Not Get Picked Up

i like the sound of grimes...has anyone else been hearing that we would have taken grimes at pick 4 had morton not been available then

One person posted that on this forum.

I asked them for the source, but alas I don't think there was a reply.

What Rhino means is that if Morton had been taken in one of the first 3 picks, obviously one of either Kreuzer, Cotchin or Masten wouldn't have been, and thus leaving them available to be selected at pick 4.

I agree with him that Melbourne would have taken who ever of those three was available at pick 4, not Grimes.

I was all for giving Sampi a crack as soon as I heard he left the Eagles. I'm glad we gave him a crack, but unfortunately for him it looks like it's not meant to be.

Thats fine, but I'll be annoyed if another club picks him up and he ends up transforming his career - after we were the club to trial him. Unlike Pickett, Sampi has age on his side and this should be heavily factored into MFC's decision.

The Dees are doing their due dillegence with Sampi. Doesnt seem to be much excitement eminating from the Junction oval !! They ( MFC footy dept ) seem to be implementing better thinking at the moment and in that frame of thought i'll accept t what they decide on him. Cant say im terribly impressed so much. Fitness and body soundness seems the issue, not whether he can play, as he can.

Taking Sampi is an absolute no brainer. We had enough frustration with injured players this year. We don't need to draft a player who is not only unfit but also injured.

You can't find a less risky way of getting a former top 6 ND player onto a list.

There is no money risk but there is the risk of waisting that pick on an overweight player. Sampi said he had no passion for afl at WCE. The passion was gone from the game, not the club. So you can see there is a large risk. We pick up sampi my concirns are that:

* He is a byron pickett all over again. Yes age is on his side but he looks incredibly overweight. The side shot pic of him looks decieving but dont forget he has been carrying extra weight and perhaps doesent have the speed he had and his mussles and bones not to the standard they were

* The passion for the game has been lost before. Whos to say it wont happen again

I pray melbourne dont recruit sampi. Hes fitness is not even at VFL level and passion for the game a serious questionmark

Yep, you are probably right then.

It's been said before, but it just seems to be the new game on draft day, the old "we couldn't believe he was still available at that pick" thing.

Not just Melbourne, but just about every club does it. Almost saying that every one else got it wrong and we are the beneficaries.

If Craig Cameron is right, and Grimes was the 4th best player in the draft, there will be alot of clubs with egg on their face. Richmond may well have picked up the best recruit this year, and I'm not talking about Cotchin or Rance.

I agree with you in part Rhino. There are some big risks with recruiting Sampi. But sometimes you just have to give a guy the benefit of the doubt. If he can prove to the club that he does want to play for the Melbourne footy club, and he is able to get his fitness to a reasonable level then we should seriously consider recruiting him. Even if it means he has to start the home and away season a few weeks later.

What is not in doubt is his talent - he is capable of causing opposition teams a lot of headaches. And he is only 23-24 years old.

"we are happy with the draft and our early picks.. if morton wasn't there (and you assume Cruzer and Cochin we would have taken grimes and if grimes wasn't available there at 14 we would have taken Maric" etc etc I'm too lazy to find a link.

I don't know why everyone wants Kanga or Gourdis, 16 AFL passed on them including Melbourne with pick 73. If we really wanted them we could of had them.

We need to take Sampi, as he can not be rookie drafted. Put Kanga on the rookie list and if Sampi fails promote Kanga that way we get the best of both worlds.

Agree with you Paddo. We obviously recognise his talent otherwise we wouldn't have asked him to train with us. His problem has always been attitude. He's had 4 weeks or so to show us how serious he is and the club will have been monitoring him closely.

The club is in a very good position to make a call on him. If he misses it will be because he has not convinced us he's serious about playing AFL footy.
