POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs Fremantle

Featured Replies

I think everyone (including supporters) got ahead of themselves last week, we are a young team with a new coach, it wont happen overnight, patience required.

After QT it was 10.9 to 9.9 (6 points), not bad for a WA trip, kept them to 1 goal in last.

Definite room for improvement though.

After 1/4 time it was 10 goal to our 9.

We will rue that first quarter.

At 1/4 time if you said we'll lose by 8 goals I'd definitely would have taken it.

Unfortunately we got nothing out of van rooyen and brody up forward & nothing picketts were useless

Looked every bit like the 24/25 Goodwin slop.

Slow, fumbly, handball to nowhere, can’t chain effective possessions together, punished on the turnover with little to no resistance…

BUT, I’m willing to cut them a lot of slack. Last we played extremely high tempo in 30 degree heat and again playing in Perth heat a week later.

Must come out with better intent against Carlton next week. They are a team we can and probably should beat if round 1 is anything to go by.

This is only a reality check if you got ahead of yourself.

This was a totally unsurprising result. Honestly, winning two quarters after that nightmare start, and fighting back in the last, is to our credit.

Losing Turner ruined our defence, highlighting that we were too short for Fremantle at selection.

Ridiculous to see posters already piling on Langford, Lindsay and Windsor. In what world are they going to compete on a 6 day break, on a hot evening, against a midfield like Fremantle’s? Clearly work to do for them but FFS just bear in mind how much more experienced and talented the opposition were.

Tholstrup’s job on Serong was fantastic, Gawn is ridiculous (Darcy’s a fail of a ruckman though), Langdon played his best game in ages, Chandler fought it out and Rivers looked a lot better this week IMO.

We are going to be thrashed by a few sides this year. Next week should be a better showing.

I'm going to forgive a fair bit this year, but hard to forgive that third quarter. Game had settled. Had an OK second quarter. Had a chance to reset and show a bit. Folded.

Apart from anything, the lack of dare and enjoyable footy on the rebound was startling. The goals we kicked were very Goodwin era because the forward entries were very Goodwin era. Maybe the wave running and handball chains are what we do against Richmond, North and St Kilda but not yet against the better teams.

Tell you what - Xavier Taylor can't come on quick enough.

I’d rather we let them learn.

Viney will help later , we have a bit of depth at Casey.

Have Faith

I had my doubts last week on CJ, I now realise why Hawthorn let him go.

He wasn't alone tonight though.

Steele tried really hard all day, not the best day for us but it’s clear we’re gonna get 110% from him every week. We’re lucky to have him.

This game style concerns me. Its why last week didn't give me that much hope. Feels like playing Russian roulette with 5 bullets in the chamber. I just don't believe that building a game around offence first vs. Defence first will have much success in this league. Especially not here where the willingness to scrap factor historically is very low.

I'm not convinced that the new regime really understood what we have been lacking and it might see us cop some real pain. Hope I'm wrong.

The lack of midfield depth was scary. Windsor looks a mile off it, and Langford further behind than him.
And some question why we still need JV.

Viney would have been as useless as an ashtray on a motor bike he is to slow aginst teams that run and move the ball quick.

Nar it was worse than that!

U are kidding, piling on ?? They are young and should be full of run. Lindsay worries me the most. Looked like a deer in headlights tonight

He'll get another gig somewhere else and that club will be making a spectacularly bad mistake.

He could not go with max.

It's not unfair to suggest that Langford and Lindsay may not be as ready as we thought for week in week out football so I don't accept this criticism.

Of course most of us expected to lose convincingly today but it doesn't mean we can't critique where things went wrong and see what we need to learn. Freo were excellent but 80+ points from turnover suggests we have plenty of work to do and shouldn't just chalk these up as nothing to worry about.

Did Voss pick up langdon? Not sure fox have shown it enough😐

Are you actually alllowed to do that. I mean what the 🤷‍♀️

Whilst the form of langford and Lindsay is concerning, we need to remind ourselves that they've played 20 games. 2nd yr blues are real and against a primed peak age midfield of Brayshaw serong Bolton, it's not surprising they would struggle. They'll struggle against Cripps next week too.

Same goes for Windsor, albeit less excused as he's played more games, but I do find myself wondering if he's a centre bounce midfielder at all. He looks like a straight line outside receiver, and I think he is one. Yeah he'll get on the end of a tap or an out the front clearance maybe once a game, but I just don't think he has the tackling, contested, ability or body for the contest that you need in there. He's not a player you want down on your knees foraging for the footy and trying to body it to advantage.

Tbh a lot of the players in this team are a bit NQR.

Certainly missing a few critical ingredients.
