Farewell Steven May

Sorry to see the big Fella go, great player.

Just out of interest does him retiring free up his salary?

Rumour is that he paid his last year out. I would imagine itโ€™s true as well. Club had to free the spot for a new player. Better than having someone on personal leave holding onto a spot.

I know. thatโ€™s what I was commenting on

Maybe just stick to the โ€˜no commentโ€™

Make it 11 with Spargo, 50% of team in 4 seasons

An absolute warrior who was essential during war-time defensive grit under Goody.

Hopefully his situations can be resolved so he can do a lap around the G and get some recognition from the fans. (Same goes for Harmes as well)

Have a career, Maysie, so pivotal to our premiership

Still remember sitting in the stands in early 21 and never really stressing about a loss because, even if we had no momentum, that backline could survive an entire half with the footy in the D50

One thing I always appreciated from the man was his media interviews, always genuine and no nonsense

Hope he enjoys his retirement with his partner and child

Sad to see an outstanding player's career fizzle out in this manner.

I'm far from convinced that this was entirely a voluntary decision on May's part.

Itโ€™s been labelled a retirement, but as Willie S. said, โ€œwhatโ€™s in a name?โ€

There would have been some settlement, he won't have got 100% of what was owing to him.

ย

The settlement was confidential but no doubt, he'll get most of what he was contracted to be paid and remember, he's entitled to remuneration from East Ringwood so he'll end up as well off financially had he played out the year.

Probably the best tall defender Iโ€™ve ever seen in red and blue. For a few years there he was the best full back in the whole league.

That 2022 final against the Swans playing on Buddy was the best defensive game Iโ€™ve ever seen by any player ever. It was super human watching it live.

Congrats on a brilliant career Maysie. Weโ€™ll miss you!

How many people can say;

"Won a premiership where the whole team strategy relied on what I could do, which I did better than anyone else in the league."

Whatever you think about Maysie's more colourful moments, the truth is we don't have a flag without him. Simple. One of the best full backs in many, many years. Watching him and Lever hold teams to peanuts week in, week out, was a joy. A ruthless warrior on the field, he often led the way - I will never forget him almost winning that '23 semi-final against the blues, by himself.

Go well, Maysie. Thank you.

Whatโ€™s the running total on payouts.. itโ€™s sad end as retiring premiership players should have a final game send off, all self inflected. Hope he finds peace and returns to the 1st reunion of 21 as past premiership hero

HI Demonlanders,

A sad way for such a great of our club to fade out the back door. Hope he gets some sought of sendoff by the club.

Here is my tribute to a fullback without who the 57-year drought would probably now be a 64 year drought and counting.

Thank you, Stephen, May ==> https://soundcloud.com/ritmo-virtuale/thank-you-stephen-may/s-IkpoNLMCOeC?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing&si=9a0f461280a34e17964236c467e84313

Such a massive player for us for a decade, both defensively and with ball in hand, thankyou for '21 mayzy, always part of the red and blue family

Thanks for the ride Maysie. One of Melbourne's great defenders if not the best. No premiership without you. You're now free to accept the Life Membership. Congratulations.

what a weird turn of phrase... "but players nonetheless"

well, they weren't the accountants, were they? perhaps mick is alluding to them as 'playas'

The reporting was that he was paid his base salary and some of the incentives. So not everything, but not surprising a player of his age would have a heavily incentives based contract

Thought this was pretty good acknowledgement by Simpson.

May was also excellent in the media as well (despite his "Smoked them" gaffe at the B&F). Some of his insight when interviewed was excellent and he always gave more than most players.

Geelong are lauded for turning over a third of their flag team in 3 years, whereas we are painting as failures

Yes the not so subtle inferences from the Carlton acolyte.

The Media maggots can't help themselves.

And it all started from the Media intruding into players and officials private lives and we told them to "Fuschias off limits"

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourneโ€™s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last yearโ€™s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although itโ€™s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sundayโ€™s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to foolโ€™s gold.
