Farewell Steven May

Was an amazing defender at his peak!

Will always be remembered as a Demons Premiership player.

All the best for the next stage of your life 👍

Thanks for everything he did for us, a key player in our premiership and success while at the club. Will miss his innocent what did i do act...
Not unexpected given recent decisions. Wish him al the best, and I assume we'll see him running around in a team below AFL level.

Thank you, Steven, for providing the reason and material that has enabled this filling of these three pages (so far).

👏 on your career.

👏👏 on your career with us.

Easily the best full back we've had in my time watching the Dees (from the mid 90s).

Him and Lever could not be beaten in 2021 and for most of 2022 leading to coaches finding new game plans to go around them

The 2023 SF will always be remembered for the Acres goal, but if that Viney kick had got past Weitering, then that game would have forever been remembered by Dees fans as one of the greatest defensive masterclasses by a full back. May was unbelievable that night

This departure hurts compared to other departures recently.

If there was anyone you could visually tell was 100% giving his all as well as leading the backline purely from competitiveness it was Steven.

Absolute pillar of our success.

Fantastic reader of flight and mark of the ball.

Well never forget you mate.

That is a truly classy farewell message. He was a fantastic player, giving up height against his opponents week after week and beating them with superior bodywork and judgement.

First of all i thought the statement from Paul Guerra was pretty poor actually. Zero acknowledgement of his contribution as a premiership player.

Definitely the best full back i have seen in my team supporting the MFC. He now goes down as a life member of the footy club who was an absolute beast in defence.

Forwards around the competition have now breathed a huge sigh of relief upon hearing this news because at his best he was simply unstoppable.

All the best Maysie.

Bowey aside, May has been my favourite across this decade thus far. Trading him to maximise the Hogan deal was a risky masterstroke and everything about him was so very UnMelbourne. In my mind he was more important to us winning a flag than any other one player, both in getting us there (maybe aside from Max) and on the day on one leg. Hoping getting away from the club is good for him to get his life right and good for us to focus on the season with one less distraction.

Built like a brick outhouse, fantastic speed, genuine class, excellent contested mark, penetrating left foot, hugely demanding on his team-mates and off the field he was prone to uncommon candour. A genuine favourite of mine and easily the best key defender I've seen in over 50 years.

I hope he always feels welcome at the MFC.

An MFC legend, without him I doubt our much vaunted defence during the early 2020's gets us that drought breaking flag.

Had an unmatched desire to win/hatred of defeat and that bit of agro that is necessary for successful clubs.

Disappointing the way it ended but was the most important cog in our premiership run. Good luck!

Geelong are lauded for turning over a third of their flag team in 3 years, whereas we are painting as failures

Thanks for everything Maysie.

Always a #1 in my book.

Good luck with the next chapter.... but dont venture too far from the G ..

Cheers ❤️💙

We have lost premiership coach & 10 premiership players l, retirements are part of the game Hibbered, Brown, May, Brayshaw medically, Traded Jackson, ANB, Harmes, Jordon, Oliver, Trac considering the demographic the cats were older, consider what we have to pay out… enough said

When multiple teams change their game style purely to negate you, that is a fair compliment. Unbelievable player.

I know. that’s what I was commenting on

Maybe just stick to the ‘no comment’

Agreed mate. Very poor the words from Guerra. Maysie deserved significantly more than that.

Let’s be real, it Goodie made some changes of game style we probably could have gone back to back and Maysie would have been a massive part of it.

Guerra transcript was an AFL article? Is there a MFC one in full? If this is all said I agree

Because we have been failures..

Since the grand final we have sacked our premiership coach and lost a dozen premiership players and havent wont a single final in 4 years.

At least Geelong have still being able to win preliminary final recentlyand play off in a grand final.

The reset under King has come exactly at the perfect time.

yeah that’s make sense

Agree

(not being sarcastic)

Maysie was instrumental in bringing a hard edge ruthlessness to our team that had been missing for an eternity. He demanded excellence from his teammates.

Was a sight to behold in his prime and I lived watching him play. Was a huge part of our premiership and I'll be forever grateful he became a Dee.

I hope he has a healthy, happy life beyond footy .

Speaking of Geelong, May had a bit of Matthew Scarlett about him. He didn't just negate forwards; he could completely dominate the backline. Some of his one-on-one stuff over many years was nothing short of miraculous.

Great player.
