The AGE - a farce

Featured Replies

Like most of us here, I’m voracious in pursuit of all things Dees in the media, so it was with great anticipation I purchased the Age this morning, a paper I’d generally avoid like the plague for personal reasons, to bask in the glow of a rapturous analysis of our sparkling efforts.

But

Crickets.. not a single word!

However there was room to feature a 1/2 page interview with some unknown Roos’ player who didn’t even play .

I understand time constraints restrict what’s published, however the game finished well before publication deadlines, so go figure.

The club’s efforts to raise the profile of the organization for membership growth was done no favours!

He is right, I watched the nine news and zero on our game, I switched to 7 and they gave the score and a comment about North players who were injured.

The Age is the only subscription i have to legacy media. IT's not too bad on local and state news (hence why i subscribe)

i don't pay any attention to the AFL journalists that write for the paper

Legacy media is dying in the [censored]. I wouldn't be too fussed what the age, or any other media outlet have to say, or not say about the Dees.

There was certainly an article , particularly extolling the brilliance of the Pickets in my copy of the Age this morning.

Perhaps not as extensive as the matches involving “important teams’, but there nonetheless

They have gone "sooky bubs"

And so it begins 2026...

The Age and its sister paper, the Sydney Morning Herald have been in steady decline for years. However, since being taken over by Nine News they’ve been doing even further downhill and soon it will go out of business altogether.

Yes, it's actually very sad what has happened to The Age, going back to the 1960's-1980's The Age was one of the Great Newspapers of the world. It was respected and revered, but once the Syne Family relinquished power, it has become a piece of trash...

This is absurd. First, there is a perfectly good coverage of last night’s Match in my copy of The Age. Secondly, their team of footy writers is first rate

Shhhh, Farmer; don't let them know about Kane Cornes's in-season Friday opinion pieces.

Or that Libby 'I've never tipped Melbourne in my life' Birch is one of their tipsters, albeit notably shaky.

When I worked at The Herald as a copy boy in the 1970’s we used to put out 3 updated newspaper editions in one Saturday afternoon including progressive footy commentary and in game photos of matches that had not finished yet. The final edition would start rolling of the press about 2 minutes after the last footy final score came in. That was all done with no modern technology. We worked wonders within very tight time constraints

Your response to my comment is ‘absurd’ . Obviously MY copy of the Age had NO reference or I wouldn’t have mentioned it🤦‍♂️

Go back maybe 20 years ago and if you wanted to read about a practice match you'd have to wait for the papers to come out the next day. But now obviously everyone just goes and looks on the internet - nearly everyone can just pick up their phone and do it without lifting a finger. Is anyone buying today's paper particularly for a quick write-up for a match simulation? I reckon many Melbourne supporters are a little more excited about this year now . But at the same time a couple of paragraphs about Melbourne beating a long-term basket Case isn't really going to increase our memberships or attendances this year , is it?

BTW how much did the Herald Scum say about the game?

The herald gave a paragraph review of every player who took the field..

Actually that's pretty good. Same as some others I used to love the Age . And while I've always hated their rival I've always thought their football coverage has been very good

I paid for the Age because they've been doing some brave journalism reporting truth against the wishes and might of Billionaire Kerry Stokes and the bikies ruining Victoria.

It's a pity that so much of their other content in the past few years is just republished from overseas papers like the telegraph and the new york times etc.

their opinion section is garbage

Too much opinion these days. Not much real news. Newspapers once relied on advertising, direct sales and subscriptions and were mostly neutral and balanced in reporting with stables of experienced journalists doing honest reporting. Now they just employ stenographers. Advertising and direct sales have dried up and subscriptions are relatively modest compared to the past. To keep subscriptions MSM has to pander to certain classes, demographics and their biases and eschew any semblance of neutrality. Most newspaper readers live within the information bubbles imposed on them that confirm their biases. MSM also now relies heavily on financial support from vested interests like government agencies, cashed up activist organisations, big business and billionaires who push their own agendas through MSM.

What’s The Age?

Well, QBD - in a land, a long-Long-LonG time ago there was a street named Spencer in Melbourne.

It used to have a train station that didn't capture the diesel-fumes like the one there now.

Across the street was a building, which looked like it was a bunker built by Stalin.

From within was produced what was once known as a broadsheet-daily newspaper.

It was called "The Age".

Only someone as old as me, who can remember Barry Vagg, Frank Davis and Graham Osborne and free-university degrees can remember such parts of Melbourne life.

That's enough now.

It's time to go to sleep QBD.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
