The Pain Driving Lever in 2026

Making assumptions here. I was at training on Monday and Petty is fine, did all the drills except for the contact ones naturally, looked really good and jovial, has over 6 weeks until round one

I’m pleased to hear that! He is a valued member of our key backs, however, I have May ahead of him (if back to full fitness). I think that choice is rather obvious!

I like Jake. Very interesting to talk to. . A very different cat šŸ‘

Yes, he’s the Travis Head of footy… looks serious (and no doubt, is) on the surface, but is a bit of an oddball.

Did anyone lazily read the bit about Simon Goodwin and thought it read "Lever still doesn't agree with the Simon Goodwin decision" (sacking)

No, I thought it was pretty clear that it was about his being dropped to Casey…

ā€œI still sit here to this day and I don’t agree with it but that’s (Goodwin’s) opinion and match committee’s decision and so for me it’s kind of over now and hopefully it doesn’t happen again.ā€

Yes thats how I read it Hardtack, a bit conceited I thought.

He may be in the news but its not a new incident.

I think you will find it is - police visiting his house (according to the papers).

Given it’s Victoria, he probably offended someone using his words.

Do you think words can be offensive and hurtful, @Ethan Tremblay ?

I take back my optimism about May for the year ahead.

I’m tipping a ā€œretirementā€ in the early rounds. His body can no longer stand up to the rigours of AFL football will be the explanation.

On May, I wonder if there is a future for him in the old Hibbard role as a back pocket to open up a position for Jed Adams?

I don’t know that he’s quick enough or good enough one-on-one to take the Hibberd role.

Steven May will play on the best oppo forward for much of the season

At Casey?

How is it obvious? Did you watch May play last year? Terrible for most of the year. Couple that with serious off field issues, age (34), and the fact that the club told him to look for a new home last year, they wanted him gone, but you still think this amounts to an obvious place in the side over Petty?

You’re not thinking clearly! You’re over emotional on this. The club didn’t ask him to look for a new home, they said that his place wasn’t guaranteed… that he was free to explore his options. I go to all games at the G, so obviously I watched. Let’s deal with facts… in 2026, May is still on our list. He is looking trim, focused and confident. He is an experienced, premiership full back. He was considered one of the best in the business throughout most of his career to date. I choose not to ignore those credentials. At the time of publication I obviously felt he was worthy to be considered for selection!

All of this could change rapidly if we take tonight’s news flash into consideration, but I am not backing down on my support for a bloke who has been a very successful member of our defence for several years. In the end the coach and selection committee will make their choice based on the pathway back to success.

No problems then, the only thing I saw up here in QLD was that it was related to the old incident. Sad to hear if it's a fresh incident.

Greg I feel that you are being overly harsh on Steven May, I watch every game and I thought May was one of our most reliable down back. I have checked his Wheely ratings and they back up my thoughts, ie

Games - 16

TOG - 93.9%

disposals - 17.7 efficiency- 86.2%

Marks - 7.1 / game Intercepts - 2.8

Spoils - 5.3 / game

He missed games due to injury and being incorrectly reported. His 1v1 is 1.9 or 66%, whatever comes out he well and truely warranted and earnt his spot in 2025.

On May I think the truth is somewhere between the two opinions. There was a sizeable gap between his best and worst games where historically he has been ultra consistent. His worst games came when he was manned on mid-sized leading forwards, something he has excelled at in the past but age has caught up with him. He now also struggles to bend and therefore his ground ball game which used to be serviceable has deserted him. May on the right match ups in 2026 will be a benefit but this might be a week to week proposition. If King is looking for the future and not the now then having others ahead of him in best 23 is likely.

I agree with all of this. In fact I’m hoping King just puts the best player available any position on the field each week. He is a MFC player & deserves our support. The next weeks will show whether his body stands up but his experience is invaluable to our younger defenders.

I don't like people either, but I don't mind umpires

He’ll be good this year as long as the ball isn’t on the ground or above his head, for those a player needs to be able to bend and reach. His first reaction to raising his arms is grabbing at his back with his right hand. Add his various other issues and he’s as cooked as a player gets.

Lever needs to get over it

A senior player still talking about disagreeing with the club 6 months after he was dropped is embarrassing

You were playing poorly Jake (and/or were injured), deal with it. Show some maturity. Any player can be dropped

I'm glad he is using it for motivation though

The May discussion took this thread off-piste (sp!) for a bit, so I'll take the liberty of another slide, onto a black run.

Is it just me, or does the thread title look like it refers to the outlook for an item of dungeon equipment?
