A few thoughts:

  • It's really not a bad side, but misses the obvious star power of (prime) Trac and Clarry

  • If picks 7 & 8 hit the ground running we'll have some impressive young talent running around

  • Can't see why we'd play May in R1 unless injuries strike

  • Really need another high quality small forward

who is your 23rd man

I actually reckon our depth now is better than last year.

Defenders (7) - Adams, May, Lever, Turner, Jiath, Salem, Bowey

Wings (3) - Langdon, Lindsay, Culley (also fwd)

Mids (6) - Pickett (also fwd), Rivers, Steele, Viney, Langford (also fwd), Windsor

Rucks (2) - Gawn, Petty (also fwd)

Forwards (5) - Mihocek, JVR, Chandler, Sparrow, Fritsch

It’s time to move past Melk, T Mc and May unless we have injuries.

Start Adams as a lock down key back and support him.

Every mid has to have 2 roles. Riv and Lindsay back. Pickett and Viney forward. Steele wing. Windsor on ball. Langford wing and forward.

***Howes is a placeholder until we get someone better but 5 backs who can all contribute overhead is vital to the zone.

***Henderson another placeholder but we need to have those waves of half forwards.

This would be a dream forward line for Steven May the defender, even he could keep up with them.

I think Jvr, Mihochek and Melksham all together are way too slow if we want forwards to lead at the ball carrier. Id love to see Kentfield play Round 1, we need athleticism ahead of the ball.

I think Petty is a forward and is too slow in defence. The game has changed since 2021 and he will get found out for pace in defence.

isnt that the same lack of space that has generated no seperation from defenders coupled with a lack of leap that has hindered him as a forward

You don't have to be quick you just have to be smart. The people writing off Melksham is amazing. Our best forward this year. Mihocek hasn't even played a game for us. I agree Roo has been disappointing but getting the second best defender now should help him out.

I think he will start down back. He's not one of the smartest of footballers that's what's hindered him as a forward.

Kentfield is breathing down Roo's neck, he's already surpassed Jefferson. Roo won't want to have another year like this year or Kentfield will surpass him.

We've got the same problem as last year. Even with Tracc and Oliver we rarely had a player get 30 possessions let alone 40. Hard to see who that player in our side will be. I guess a more attacking style and pace might help

A lot depends on what happens in the off-season. Who has niggles. Who bursts suddenly into prominence. Who finds a new position. Who fades for one reason or another.

But if I was guessing, I think there are very strong indications that King, who has politely said in public he won't throw everything out, will throw almost everything out. For that reason, and because I think we need to do it, I'd be looking at a Round 1 team that looks very different to Goodwin teams of the past 18 months or two years.

Salem Petty Howes
Jiath Turner Bowey
Lindsay Sparrow Windsor
Fritsch Kentfield Chandler
Viney Mihocek Langford
Gawn Pickett Rivers
Adams Steele Culley McAdam Heath

Ideally, we want everyone getting 20, rather than one 40 and a heap of 10-12’s.

If King lets the boys play a bit more freely, everyone will be more involved (negatively and positively)

JVR has to be delighted that we have checkers and the extended bench which will allow us to develop Heath.

I remain very optimistic he will flourish.

Key ins: Jack Steele, Brody Mihocek, Changkuoth Jiath, Max Heath

Key outs: Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, Judd McVee Jack Billings, Charlie Spargo

WE SAY: A world of list change at the Demons during trade and free agency to kickstart a new era under Steven King. The addition of Jack Steele helps fill the midfield void left by premiership pair Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. Plenty of others options to roll through there including Trent Rivers, Caleb Windsor and Harvey Langford all set for more on-ball time. Brody Mihocek brings his own flag-winning pedigree in the forward half and Changkuoth Jiath provides handy dash off half-back. The loss of Judd McVee leaves a void in defence. Steven May returns after he wasn’t able to find a new home during the trade window. But it wouldn’t be a shock if King begins to look past the veteran defender, with the potential for Harrison Petty to return to the backline. Max Heath also joined the club as ruck cover for Max Gawn and we expect Heath to be just that. Two top 10 draft picks to come in as well.

If the new forward structure does not include Harrison Petty. Then the competition between him and May will be interesting and might make him a player. Then again he might be let go next year for a round one pick and May retires, and we start again

Very interesting

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
