2026 Player Numbers

Featured Replies

Agree. Lock in Steele for number 9. 👏👏

It’s a famous one too.

🏆Brian Dixon, Laurie Fowler, Alan Johnson Neita and … 🏆Charles Spargo

  • 4 weeks later...

Unofficial (of course) but at training today some players had some new numbers.

#3 - Laurie (obviously with Salem still on the list this was random

#4 - Langford

#5 - Lindsay

#11 - Mihocek (doubt Maxy is giving up the #11)

#14 - CJ

#38 - Oscar Berry

#46 - Steele

Max Heath did not have a number on his guernsey.

Lock in 4, 5, 14 and 38 as above, and Steele in 9 of course.

Culley lusting after 13.

19 and 20 for Picks 7 and 8.

There's a pattern emerging - 3 and (?) available for 19 and 20 next year....

Clearly the other teams are worried about us: number swapping a tried and true method for throwing spies off.

On the other hand, a risky strategy for Melbourne. The 1958 GF says hello...

Was today the 2nd time Jai Culley was in #13?

At a guess..

#4 Langford

#5 Lindsay

#9 Steele

#13 Culley

#14 CJ

#19 Matthews

#20 Taylor

#27 Heath

#33 LSP

I must admit while it'd be an honour for a player to get former superstars' number (regardless of why they left) I too would rather see those numbers rested at least next year. Also while being assigned a single-digit number would be cool again I agree with the idea of Langford, as one example, sticking to #19. But why, oh why, are big numbers so bad? I don't get how a number like 16 is good but reversed 61 is some kind of insult. We're not talking about football boots or a weights program either of which might affect a player's form.

There are potentially 99 numbers available - using more of them makes it easy at times to rest numbers and/ or reserve some so that Gawn's 11 or Robbie Flower's 2 isn't just handed to the rookie list champion under-18s rollerblader who could be anything, but probably nothing. How cool would it be if some player took number 53 or 72 or 97 and a few years later are a much loved and well above average player and even for a few years after "Willow Jans-Heston" finishes on 286 games his number 97 is still seen on the jumpers of Demons supporters (or Swan or Bulldogs or whichever)? Unlike nearly any other number 97 would automatically be associated with this player for AFL fans, and some of the general public. I'd love it if a rookie decided to be different and made a high number something. Xavier Taylor for #79! 🙂

Not yet. But you have to assume steele will be 9. and jiath is likely to be 14. That leaves 19 and 20 free for new draftees

Kalani - #34 unofficially official 🤫

Kinda surprised Brody Mihocek chose not to continue in the #41. It's certainly available now that Kynan Brown is no longer on the list.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

  • REPORT: Richmond

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
