A nice start from hiim:

“Melbourne has a rich history, and I feel very humbled to be given this opportunity at one of the oldest professional sporting clubs in the world,” King said. “I can’t wait to meet the playing group, my fellow coaches, the staff, and the Demon faithful, and start building towards 2026.”

One small gripe - king in future olease refer to us THE oldest oldest professional sporting club in the world (I dont care if not true)

Not critical of the decision, but I find it a bit odd that he'll still be coaching Geelong, but good luck to him in his flag endeavours with the Cats. Don't we need a coach hands on deck to sort out list management?

He’s got 2 weeks to steal as much information as possible! Geelong took all they could from us. Even stole our runner!

There’s a few players who need a phone call from a new coach, otherwise all we really needed was to show a vision. The existing staff can convey that until King starts

Going to be interesting to find out what happened with Buckley.

His Bank Manager will know.

My sister can continue to pay up her membership (and that of all her grandkids....). She wasn't going to renew if Buckley was coach.

I... have no real opinion. I've been away from Oz way too long.

So he was our second choice?

"Nathan Buckley's presence was a curiosity all along as Bucks was interviewing Melbourne as much as they were interviewing him," he said. "Right at the end, he couldn't answer the question if they offered him the job would he take it and I know Tasmania plays a role in that somewhere."

Extensive resume, worked under pretty coaches within good stable clubs and most importantly, he was player and assistant coach at Geelong, so he knows how to get [censored] done..

But, tbf I thought it was either Buckley or Jaymie Graham, although preferred anyone as long as it wasn’t Hinkley.

Overall, I think fans should be happy with the appointment.

Of course we will have to wait for that horrible duo Kane and Caro to tell us why it is a bad decision. It will come! Bring on 2026!

So glad I don’t have to go deep into my soul and ask myself if I love Melbourne or despise Buckey more.

He got talked out of it!

That's ok, he's in for alot of pain with Tassie.

If Buckley turned us down for Tassie it will be a major regret. Think back to Sheedy at the the Giants - the first coach is like an ambassador type role. zero chance of success

Caroline Wilson, Brendan Gale and Andrew Dillon must be feeling very smug right now.

They got their man!

Just like our butchered CEO search, we've appeared to follow suit and landed on a Plan B (or even C!) with our Snr coach selection.

Genuinely can't believe we moved Goodwin on, with a year left on his contract, to bring in an Assistant Coach.

Hope my negative sentiments are proven wrong, however the lack of faith in our Administration & Board has never been higher.

Please get us Bartel now Mr King

This is what needs to happen now.

I assume this appointment is basically a signal that we are going to rebuild? That was always the elephant in the room in regards to Buckley I thought...people were suggesting this is a good job for him for a crack at a flag...but reality is this group is so far away it's not funny. With our long term contracts we're atleast 5 years off having a contending team again in my view. Can King set us on a path to build the right player culture this time? Not just for success but for a sustainable period of non negotiable competitiveness. Good luck.

Is King the right guy?

Beat me to it!

It's the first day so undoubtedly yes but I can't wait for the day all too soon where that question comes up.

WELCOME TO THE MFC STEVEN!

Written and authorised by Buckley’s chief PR strategist

Yep, Sheedy didn't do much coaching in those years. Cameron was pretty much matchday coach from the start.

And now I guess a very wealthy man.

All hail the king

I was never that keen on Buckley so I’m not sorry we didn’t pick him. Plus, means we can remain a Figjam free zone

I assume we will hold a presser at some stage for him?

If Buckley was umming and ahhing this late in the piece I get why the club moved on from him.

I would say having the Tassie thing in the back pocket made it a lot easier for him to um and ahh.

Would have loved to see what his decision was if that crutch wasn't there.

Maybe, but Buckley being non committal this late in the process would have been a major red flag

I’ll take them at their word that King was the preferred candidate

And one thing is for sure, we know he wants it

Waiting for the ‘Sack King’ thread!

For the historically minded should be more like "Off with his head".

But count me out. I loathe those threads about undermining the coach whoever he is.
