I wanted Flanders but would be interested how much we did offer him. If it was less or equal than Saints then I guess either King didn't think he was worth that and/or Tim Lamb finally being conservative on the contracts.

Not including the players that have been delisted, we have the potential of moving on Trac's full 1m+ contract, around 700-800k of Oliver's, May's full 7-800k and whatever McVee and Spargo were on.

With Mihocek and Heath coming in, we should be well in the green and I'm tired of people thinking we don't have the space.

Looking at it objectively we're just a hard sell right now.

The worm always turns. Hell, before this year absolutely nobody wanted to go to the Saints now they're more popular than Bonnie Blue.

Do the things in our control - set the culture, announce Caulfield, NAIL the draft, and flash the cash next season.

It's a marathon not a sprint.

Flanders is far from done. His PREFERRED destination is the Saints. It's up to the gold coast where he goes now.

Same as Trac, we don't get the deal, we will look for a place that will give it to us.

I haven't written this off yet

If it's straight forward, it should get done on Monday. If it prolongs then you can bet that the suns are looking at us.

I think we play plenty more cards, if we have to.

Sun's don't give enough, we pivot, Petracca for Curnow is now on the table.

Surely we can't [censored] this up, we hold all the cards if played right.

Mate, if St Kilda are going to offer pick 7, GC will be signing this deal up ASAP.

We’re out of this race.

Yeah as always we NEVER land a big fish, close association with King?? Yeah that played out nicely!

Gee the aints will play finals next year

Is this your gut feel or based on intel?

personally i find it hard to see GCS refusing pick 7

So the Saints wined and dined him with some top brass attending and I think I read somewhere we had a coffee meeting with him. Not sure if that’s right but if it is why did we not go all out and roll out the red carpet to get him.

Maybe we wanted him but not bad enough not sure what the play was here but having his former coach as our head coach did sfa

I'd say that Flanders had committed to joining the Saints for some time. He gave King the courtesy of a catchup, but his mind was made up.

Watch them speed straight past us next year.

People can Criticise all they want, but they are building a solid list. Good young talent coming through whilst adding some much needed depth and experience.

Good on them i say.

Are they trying to win the premiership or going all out for 7th? Because the latter isn’t all that admirable.

They have 1 genuinely elite player. Some good veterans in Wilkie and Sinclair. And 4 guys who could really be something - Tauru, Max King, Phillipou and to a lesser extent Darcy Wilson.

Bringing in more good players will help make life easier for the others so maybe they all take a leap. But to completely empty your salary cap all in one go without getting a true A grader or anyone that seems value for money seems a bit desperate and could really hurt if they don’t take a leap.

We haven't moved on Trac, Oliver or May yet. What if none of them move? Tell me why we didn't beat Flanders Saints offer? There was a reason our offer wasn't higher and no one knows except Lamb and co. Yeah it sucks I know, I really wanted him, but now it's over I'm just trying to think of it through a list management lens. I wonder why we didn't have the best offer when you'd think we could afford it.

You don't acquire players from other clubs by being conservative with contracts. Especially when the Saints immediate future seems more promising.

King's role would be to sell the club. He wouldn't have any input on contracts.

Well King might want the heads up he's gotta convince him to take less to come. So we should of blown Saints out of the park with our offer? Cos we didn't and there has to be a reason we didn't.

Pick 7 and 900k+ for Sam Flanders, we played our role as the underbidders!

Go for the real prize (Humphrey) or let Jase Taylor do what he’s paid to do!

Could be the ultimate bluff, and gcs could of asked us to do this too to have saints play their hand. That way we can get the Humphrey trade done

Maybe, unless GC find it hard to deal a deal for trac

Players have to agree where they want to go. Flanders is done

Playing Devil's he may not have said he wouldn't come to the Dees but PREFERS the Aints.

I do tend to agree its all over bar the shouting but no harm waiting for that ( the shouting lol )

Anyone who thinks SOS will just offer pick 7 for Flanders has never seen SOS work. Terrible to deal with, trade wise

You want to turf out star players like Oliver for one reason or another, and you think you’ll be able to walk good players back in.

?? No trades are easy, as everyone at the club has always acknowledged.

Odd post, not actually grounded in any kind of reality.

Spot on . For once we will get what we need re Trac. Tim Lamb was unequivocal. The deal will "...be in the best interests of the Melbourne Football Club..."

Fascinating few weeks coming up for the club. Mihocek is a fine symbol of culture improvement to start with.

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
