I somewhat only half jokingly suggested earlier what we would take from yesterday was "learnings".

Yes, I was having a little dig, but I also thought ( really ) that we might learn a bit about this mob, something you only really see when the goal posts move ( fitting ..lol ) and the status quo is thrown in the bin. I just wondered if we might find out more about who can as well as who should play for the Dees.

There was some great footy ... and we played some of it. In classic fashion the game was there for the winning only we weren't quite good enough. The Pups desperation in the end was probably the difference... but that was in the end !! During other periods of the game our Dickensian schizophrenia shone and dimmed. There's not a lot of point lamenting some of the silly mistakes. They happen, they still tend to bob up more than desired. Our skills need attention. I put down some of our calamity to the notion that some old habits die hard and some of our older die hards perhaps have seen better years.

There seemed a little more verve in our play. Dont think ive witnessed as much leading ( well there was some..and noticeable imo ) as was on display.

With regard to some of the fluff ups... well there looked like the intention to get a bit more jiggy, more maverick, more purposeful but it just didn't come off. Some understandable frustration apparent.

Had a few of those plays gelled better and we win.

For mine a 'learning' was we can actually play better footy. It was a bit rough, but there were signs.

A new 'enabler' with some new team members and we might be competitive again.

Again we certainly stuffed up a few things, but we looked like we were trying. I enjoyed the game if not the result.

Possibly the greatest takeaway from the game .... we did the right thing..... in forcing change. Was just needed.

Go Dees

Do you really think that yesterday’s game plan was any different to what we’ve been attempting all year? You really think that a coach sacking and 6 days between games is enough time to see a difference that can’t be credited to Goodwin and the coaching team under him?

Yesterday’s performance has been there most of the year, just inconsistently as the players have been learning the new style an we’ve been blooding new players.

Game plan ? Well you were never going to get an overly different game plan. Funny you say that as I DIDN'T.

What i referred to were the nuances .

There was , imo, certainly a different directive out of the coaches box.

If you feel compelled to hang onto Goodwin that's your call.

Some signs of life but not in the middle other a few sparks from clarry. Two things stood out, how easy it was for them at clearances and how quickly they transitioned to spaces where they outnumbered us. Still we had a crack and the younger players were good. Collingwood will be especially nervous .

I don't think the game plan has changed.

It has looked different/better in the last three games: Saints, WCE and WBD as they aren't renowned for strong defence. Nonetheless, it is good for the team to know it does work and in-game practice is essential.

Hopefully, it stacks up vs Hawks and Pies.

Gee culley has showed something that we can definitely work with.

I think he's shown more in 2 games than koltyn has shown in all his games he's played this season

Bloody loved the game by Tmac on Darcy.

Tom seems to be improving with old age! Really want he and Melk to sign on again for next year

Will we ever learn why he was dropped out of the blue? I am also very impressed by the effort from those two veterans. Let's hope they have the will and body to go one more year.

Against Gold Coast a few weeks back, we shifted Viney out of centre bounce. We got smashed at clearance in the first quarter and immediately abandoned that plan.

Yesterday we kept Trac forward despite being smashed at stoppage early.

I like that we didn’t cave. We kept at it, which helped Windsor, and IMO Trac got better as the day went on.

Different directive from the coaches box?

Do prey tell, what was that?

Petracca almost lost his life last year. Perhaps that's an exaggeration but if he believes it surely that'll affect his on-field confidence. Also if players are meant to be in peak physical condition wouldn't a month or two of being an invalid affect that? He may improve a lot next year. Fingers crossed

Yes Petracca gets a bit of a pass.

Maybe the mind set etc..

You're not stupid... don't act it

It was not necessarily a new game plan. But we started the year with a very aggressive style, and as we struggled in games we became more conservative again.

For instance, start of year/yesterday we embraced risk through use of the corridor. At the start of the year when we chipped around in D50, we looked to move ball into the centre square. During the middle part of the year, we played a lot more long down the line footy.

Similarly, we largely abandoned the run and gun hand ball game from d50 which was also more on display here.

Whatever people think about Goody's sacking I really hope that false narratives and myths don't take hold on Demonland.

The post above is an example of such false narratives.

We have been playing fast, transition footy all season and playing with an attacking mindset all season. In fact it's been one of our problems - we don't have the cattle to not cough up huge scores on turnover, as we did again yesterday.

Tactically and method wise, yesterday's game was no different to how we've played all season, particularly since the bye.

In fact we have been really improving our transition game in the second half of thevyear, as evidenced by a raft of stats, foe example scores from defensive half.

I mean 7 of our previous 8 quarters befor3 yesterday's game were some of best transition all season.

Spot on. People see what they want to see.

As Chaplin said in his pre match presser, there's no time to change anything, so they'll continue working on what they have all season.

I was annoyed about the result; mids didn't do great and it's upsetting to see Windsor injured, but on the positive side...

Our players were leading yesterday and being rewarded and taking marks or gathering crumbs.

Goal kicking looked better

The second half of the game was exciting to watch.

We looked competitive.

Changes were made.

Young lads like Culley and Adams might be alright.

Players were smiling and enjoying themselves as were fans.

There was pride in the jersey

You make a good point , the game plan works against teams with weaker defences. But surely a game plan is only worthwhile and sustainable if it works consistently against the top teams with good defences. Clearly our game plan has failed miserably in that regard . This is why our win loss ratio has plummeted and is less than half of what it was in 2021.

I thought there was plenty of endeavour in yesterday’s game but it was the execution at the end which was and has consistently been the problem. Moreover , our mid field has gone from elite to average in record time.

I felt your last couple of points where clearly what cost us the game today, so frustrating.

It seems obvious to me more individual coaching is required. Find the repeat skill errors and work hard on those and less on areas they are competent in.

Another bizarre move by Goodwin where we managed one win & 4 or 5 losses.

2025 has been the year of dishonourable losses

6 losses by 13 points or under now

Not fit enough to run out games

If you said mentally fit enough I might agree with you, for me it is all between the ears. Dogs started on fire every quarter, then the Dees would have the better of the later part of each quarter. Nothing wrong with fitness, confidence definitely,

Pre-game on MMM Chaplin declared they planned to be more attacking.
And I thought .... Good.

Who at Casey do you think deserves a go that hasn’t had a chance yet?

Sestan. And thats more to do with my romantic notion of fulfilling your dream to play AFL.

He's had too many injury setbacks at the back end of the season to debut. Otherwise I reckon he would have definitely played a few games this season. Which is a shame for him.

It would be a wild take to give Kentfield a go, but I'm here for it.

My heart says debut now, my head says next season, after a big preseason.

I like it that he can kick goals and that having an opponent is a personal insult.

And so were the recruiters.
Any kid that lairy has got to be good .... Right.

He will be Fork ‘em, give him a tough pre-season, new coach, new role. He had his best game for Casey on Saturday so with a bit of luck and a finals series at Casey playing on ball role that will help getting him in the right groove.

Dunno man.
He's had a few opportunities to show what he's got and it hasn't been real lot.
You'd think he woulda been fit this year unless Goody was gifting him games.

I did think it looked as if he was trying too hard at times and it wasn't working.

I took the statement to mean not just this game but recent games which I think is incorrect because Kossie has been playing well.

I apologise. I totally misunderstood. I can see why you would’ve questioned Frap’s comment. All good 👍🏽

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
