And what would Viney know about it as a first-year player? There were rumors all over the place about players canceling 2k runs because it was too hot under Bailey, players running the show. We were a circus. Like I said, he might not have succeeded, but it didn't make it any easier for him; the club was in a mess.

The coaches responsibility at afl level is not to sore out a bunch of ****ebags. It is to create an environment where players see how they can individually improve.

I donโ€™t believe our players are inhereiting the former and neither should they be.

Another blow for Demons as Hinkley pulls out

Really?

Who TF would want Hinkley? The list he has had at times to never make a GF is a failure

I reckon the senior assistants pulling out/not showing interest is because everyone knows Buckley has the job

How many failed head coach roles can one go for? 3-4? before they start to smell like failures.

I actually think that Buckley is not the safe choice. It would be safer to pick an unknown. There's more expectation on picking someone like Buckley as opposed to an untried assistant. His standing in the football world, senior coaching experience and media presence puts him front and centre for criticism.

I'm on the fence where it comes to Buckley's appointment, but he has been reflective enough of his shortcomings as a senior coach. Let's say he is driven instead of egotistical and it gives us a totally different perspective.

I'm somewhat disappointed that Enright has withdrawn from the race but that is based on my own knowledge of him as a player and the media reports of him as an assistant coach.

Buckley may not have the ticker for 10 years so he will need to anoint a successor coach after 5 years or sooner if things go pear-shaped. That's the backup plan get a good assistant and let him know that if his patient he will get the gig.

Mark Neeld was a Mick Malthouse / Filth Trojan Horse. I don't think Bucks will be the same.

Spot on, and the dees are "going through the process" so that if Bucks doesn't work, they can say he was the best candidate. Even if he has had the job from the get-go.

Wasn't really a fan of Buckley when he was the C'Wood coach but I loathe everything connected to that club ๐Ÿ˜

I have listened to him on SEN and on Foxtel and he does show some sound analysis and some introspection from his time as a senior coach.

He certainly would have a burning desire to be a Premiership coach.

I think the whole process is set up for him and he will be the Dees coach in 2026.

Vic media love him such as whately. Just ask Adelaide watchers I know say a self promoter and under achiever at the sharp end despite their talent.

Good point and adds support imo that Dee's Board timed the run well to change coaches this year rather than mix it with blues and possibly lions next year. I'm coming around to the views on here that Buckley has a lot of traits our list needs so get him now ahead of a race next year.

Ken is a great coach, he had an average list. and took that club from almost folding to multiple prelims.

He was the same as Goody, good coach but his time there was done, i don't think he would be a good coach for us. His game style was very much the same as Goodies, and just like when we lost that big tall in Ben Brown, Port also dropped away when Dixon retired. But they played the territory game and inside 50 game much like us.

Ken would be a great assistant coach to knab, apparently is a very good people person, motivator and gets the best out of players.

Iโ€™m not entirely sure that King isnโ€™t part of the process but I know the club were particularly enthused and interested in how Kelly had presented. Think McRae. It was different, it was positive.

King has worked under Bevo, Chris Scott and coached his own team for a few weeks. To me he looked a brilliant candidate but there is something about Kelly.

Appreciate that mate.

One thing I would say about Kelly, is that he has seen a successful environment at Geelong as a player and as a coach. Living down here and knowing a few of their staff through my workplace/working in football, they have very clear but different philosophies on how to get the best out of footballers.

I would be very happy with him...

I think Hinkley would be a good hire if you want to sneak into the 8.

He'd squeeze everything out of the list and have us around the 7th to 10th area for the next 3 years.

However, his finals record was pretty damn ordinary as there was often one major let down in which they had their finals destiny in their own hands - eg: the 2020 and 2021 COVID prelims where they had the luxurious position of staying home in September, or last year's 80 point home thumping to the Cats in week 1 finals.

We can do better than Ken.

Honestly i think memories of Mark Neeld will be the reason we're super reluctant to hire any of the potential 5 untried assistants in this process, the huge bonus with Nathan Buckley is we know for sure he isn't going to be a Mark Neeld, which wouldn't matter as much for most clubs as it clearly will for Melbourne

Itโ€™s NATHAN BUCKLEY than daylight in my view

Heโ€™s definitely got all the main attributes ticked off . He is driven to succeed. Has great insights. Commands respect. Sure others say heโ€™s not a premiership coach or player but he came within a bees body part of winning one.

Iโ€™m glad to see heโ€™s sounding out some assistant role and whoโ€™s possibly available. Thatโ€™s what we want to see.

Steven King is only other possibility for me. Has the background and time as an assistant.

James Kelly is a [censored]. Maybe if we go down the arrogant road but that was mark neeld so buyer beware.

A fresh report is suggesting Nathan Buckley is making key moves behind the scenes as Melbourne prepares to unveil its next senior coach by the end of September.

The Demons are on the lookout for Simon Goodwinโ€™s successor, with the former Collingwood coach largely tipped as the frontrunner to take over.

And now Channel 7 reporter Xander McGuire says Buckley has gone as far as โ€œsounding outโ€ potential names who could form part of his backroom staff.

โ€œMy understanding is (Nathan Buckley) has already started sounding out potential people that might form his footy department if he were to get the gig,โ€ he said on Wide World of Sports.

โ€œTake that for what it is.โ€

If we stick to our deadline of before prelim weekend

Bucks should be in seat within 18 days

They have been there, done that, not happening again ๐Ÿ˜

Graham Wright has given Voss 2026 to see what he can do with some big changes in the Football Department and in the playing list to come too. Interesting times ahead ...

Iโ€™ve never backed favourites, and I have a solid dislike for most things Collingwood - but they are not good enough reasons to not select Buckley.ย

However, Iโ€™m leaning towards James Kelly as our next coach. His record impresses me. Three time premiership player - so a winner. 300 odd games played - so had longevity. Been part of the successful Cats coaching team - including a premiership in โ€˜22. A renowned people person, and last but definitely not least, a Jim Stynes medal winner.

Buckley cannot match any of these traits/ achievements - so Iโ€™m backing Kelly for our role.

Is the prelim weekend deadline just there so Buckley can publicly finish up his media commitments with Fox Footy before being all in with the club?

Hinkley got them to multiple Prelims. People widely underestimate how hard that is. Geelong, Collingwood are exceptions, not the rule. They make top 4 and got into a position to win. They ultimately faltered. Had we made at least one Prelim in 22 or 23, Goodwin would probably still be coach. Internally at AFL level, there is a lot of weight put onto Prelims.

Also he had an okay list. Imv they significantly over performed with him as coach. The one year with him taking a back seat, they suddenly turn into a potato farm of a team. Not surprising.

That said it was definitely time for a change.

I do find this interesting. Chris Scott inherited a premiership list and was very fortunate in a way to get the first flag out of the way right away, Hinkley and Scott after that actually had really similar records in terms of being consistently around the mark without perhaps cashing in, Scott has probably tipped that further in his favour the last 3-4 years, but the idea Ken Hinkley can't coach is silly.

In my opinion we would be mad Not to take Buckley.

Possibly part of the story. A 6+ week formal process also creates the perception that there has been sufficient governance/rigour applied (which may not have been the original plan under Green but possibly pushed for by new CEO/president).

Time/distance from the Goodwin sacking might also suit Buckley - helps him sell the story he wasnโ€™t plotting the appointment prior to Goodwin being given marching orders.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
