Hearing Green saying the criteria of 8 years experience as a coach , not sure why the footy world needs to hear this, Scott & Macrae I’m sure didn’t have 8 years ( could be wrong) an both are premiership coaches with possibly another flag coming up! Keep this stuff in house!

Apart from Buckley, they've only been assistant coaches at AFL level.

The former senior coaches are available because they failed. They would have some explaining to do.

In your penultimate paragraph you’ve ended a sentence with a full-stop instead of an exclamation mark! Just letting you know in case consistency matters to you!

You’re welcome!!!!!!!!

😜

no problem here with 'case consistency' 😁

McRae was an assistant 2007-2021.

Kelly, King, Lade, Skipworth all clear the 8 year mark.

I agree about not making it public but seems like a reasonable metric.

Clarkson was 7 years. Hardwick 5 years. Chris Scott just 3 years.

But I think you can argue Hardwick was a fraction too green to begin with. I also think Scott brought a good tactical change to win the 2011 flag but then Geelong weren’t actually all that good for the next half a dozen or so years.

That’s really saying something… you have many, many, many disappointing occurrences from which to choose. 😉

Carlton 2022 Semi tops it in my view. Footy kind of died for me that night.

It was 2023, but the 22 straight sets was just painful

Totally agree pf my mate and I were in complete shock as we thought the game was over when Stynes was penalised. That last five minutes scarred me for years then the pandemonium of our Dee brethren was terrible topped off by the epic journey out of the car park. I still feel like we were robbed.

Whereas, Goody had 4 years at Essendon, including an interim senior coaching position, plus an additional 2 years as an assistant under Roos at Melbourne. So he wouldn't clear the bar either.

The 8 years experience seems incredibly arbitrary.

Ditto... blotto..

i Agree, but I think it’s just a mature acknowledgement from the club this isn’t just a footy coaching role, the entire club needs realignment and repair and the person to do that is going to need experience

Are people actually upset by Green saying we want eight years experience?

I’d bloody hope we’re trying to get an experienced candidate - it’s a senior coaching role for a football club that’s lacked strong leadership for years now

You must have forgotten what Roos inherited. We were North / West Coast level bad. How is Clarkson going at North?

We played finals 1 year after he left, which was something we hadn't done in over a decade prior.

He changed the trajectory of this club, and set the foundations for Goody.

When he took over, did you think we'd win a flag in your lifetime? I sure as hell didn't.

We are in a completely different place now with our list, but I still believe that what we need most is a cultural/ attitude/ mental reset. More than we need a new game plan or a list overhaul.

I agree especially the highlighted. I would extend this to a total club attitude. I think Roos had the support of the AFL community snd there was a change of approach by the press and umpires to recognise a winning attitude.

If our team played as vigorously as displayed by the Pies and the cats, our players would be rubbed out by the officials at every level,. Penalised on the field and at tribunal.

While i appreciate the game is difficult to umpire, the inconsistency and bias in many of our matches and certainly tribunal decisions appears obvious. WE need to reset and ask what are we doing wrong so we can play with the same confidence as the more favoured teams. Equal treatment will lessen frustration and allow us to play amore attractive game.

I am probably not expressing myself well, and do not want to be seen as just complaining. We need to be positive and identify how our attitude must be reset.

Correct, they are now media stars who give their opinions, rather than report.

As mentioned, with an arbitrary rule like this, we'd immediately rule out the next Chris Scott, Hardwick, Clarkson or Goodwin.

I think we told Buckley the role was his before we sacked Goody and we're going through the process to give the board cover, making this point moot anyway.

But I've been wrong before...

I get it, but clearly we’ve identified experience as a requirement for the role

Every club will have different needs when going to market for a new coach

You mention Scott as an example, but Geelong was a strong enough club on and off the field to ‘take the risk’ on an untried coach (as good as he’s since been for them)

Would we have structures in the club to support a coach like that? I’m not so sure

Regardless I tend to agree with your last point, it’s pretty clear we sounded out Buckley long before Goodwin was sacked, so it’s a moot point anyway

Totally agree mate.

The club have had a quiet word to NB about the role.

Club doing its due diligence in about conducting a process to see if any prospects can bring anything fresh and new to the table.

If not then its NB's gig.

He ticks the boxes and the main one he is hungry for success which i like, brings a profile and aura with him, we need that as a club.

He can handle the big dogs (egos) in our team also.

I guess this is my point. Every club is at a different stage and has different needs. Clearly, we've identified we need experience, but this is the problem with an arbitrary rule like 8 years experience. What if the best candidate had 6 or 7 years experience and was seen as the glue to the FD and wider club?

I think it shows how poor/naive some of our messaging is. There was never any need to be specific about the amount of experience in terms of years. Just say you're looking for experience and you won't be drawn into specifics. They will come out as part of the process.

An operator like PJ wouldn't frame things this way. And if you've seen Green's video on socials yesterday, he can barely string a sentence together, and manages to repeat the same talking points regardless of the question. (I know it's difficult being in front of the camera, I struggle with this too unless I know exactly what I'm talking about)

I worry we still don't have the right people in charge though.

Time will tell.

Totally agree about Green

All I’ll say is that Smith can’t start soon enough…

It’s great that we have Demonland to voice our opinions and concerns to share with one another and float theories, perceptions and inner thoughts about all and sundry it’s a great outlet. But I sometimes feel that we over analyse every detail and look for faults that don’t exist, this is a time for reflection and great anticipation, I for one am enjoying the ride and will trust the decisions made by our club in Sourcing our new football leader.😁👍

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
