100% - ridiculous to suggest they put the cue in the rack.

Gunston was asked about the importance of percentage in his post match, on ground interview and he said they we're aware of the importance of maximising percentage in terms of their final ladder position

(they are on outside chance of finishing top 4 - if they do it will be on percentage. And if they don't percentage might be the difference between playing a home elimination final at the G or an interstate elimination final).

The last 5 minutes they started going slow....players may want %, but they also do not want to get injured before finals.

Not cue in rack but they definitely did try and slow it up.

Let's say that's true - would make sense because counter intuitively the best thing in that circumstance is to maintain the percentage they had by ensuring we didn't score at all and the best to do so is to slow the game right down (because opening up the game risks your opponent scoring too and say scoring 3 to 2 goals would actually decrease percentage).

Makes our effort to score 3 late goals mote meritorious no less so.

Junk time goals are clearly more valuable to some than others. You are clearly always right though....to fit whatever narrative you feel is "more" right.

If so, they probably got a blast from coach and leadership. A top 4 position is more valuable than possibly losing an individual player. So if they did what you say they are not playing for the team but are selfish and can expect a long article from Wilson putting the boot in.

Haha I initially read that as the Dee's being too risky.

That’s not entirely incorrect Norm!!

Did I just hear that Steven King has put his hand up? I missed the back end of the conversation

he confirmed that he would have a chat if we approached him, which i thought was a strange way of phrasing it

how about all these wanna-be coaches actually WANT to apply, rather than be approached?

Exactly, if that’s his approach then it’s a no.

i felt the same way when chaplin said he didn't even want to apply

pretty odd to not even want to go thru the interview process as someone who apparently has senior coaching ambitions

Absolutely....I am sure Sam would not be happy with how they finished the game off.

It happens in most games though, junk time goals when teams take their foot off the accelerator, which is what it looked like to me. Lol Wilson is only interested in boardroom politics. Commentry on actual football, not so much!

True it happens in lots of games, but not you would think as the finals approach , playing a grade B team and getting an extra bit of % could make all the difference in a team's status in the finals.

If Miranda Kerr wants to discuss dating me I will pick up the phone.

I'm pretty sure the club already said they needed a new voice and he's been there a while. I think he even said that himself. So no point putting his hand up.

It's actually very possible that Freo could sack JL if they miss out on finals. Melb might not be the only club looking for a coach in 2 weeks time.

There is no chance they sack him after winning 15 games

Now it's getting interesting.

Any others playing mid-court will now have to make up their minds... have a tilt... fade away.

Roll up... roll up....

No thanks. Only flag he's been involved with as a coach was Dogs in 2016.

And I’ll never forget what he did to Jeff White.

I’m sorry but I am obviously old school because when I was interested in a job I WOULD APPLY NOT EXPECT THEM TO REACH OUT TO ME.

Honestly 'bin', I thought Mitchell showed his intent when he rested Watson early in the game. Then the smiles, laughter & levity on the bench led by the coach.

They were playing with us & never looked like losing unfortunately. I would have loved us to have wiped the stupid smart a... grin off his face but it wasn't going to happen.

Maybe we will get the last laugh if they miss the top 4 by a fraction.

I think he just knows who the likely candidate is and like others doesn’t want to publicly over extend himself only to miss out

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
