I was taught for ten years at an all male Christian Brothers School in a posh suburb in Melbourne.

The Teachers who I remember and was impressed with the most, in retrospect, were not Brothers, but were the two Lay Teachers that taught there.

Judging by the Pupils of our Premiership Team of 2021, Simon was a very good teacher of Men.

If/when he writes a memoir of his playing career, I think people will be surprised by his attitude and appraisal of some of the coaches and players he played with.

Very astute, very charismatic and often funny. That's extremely rare.

And the worst tactical match day coach ever. Even worse than Dennis Jones.

A smidgin of sensible tagging would have won us round 1 & the 2 St Kilda games & allowing Geelong to have loose defenders was suicide that even rookie coaches avoid.

Good riddance.

If you are going back that far no wonder you are Cranky. The appointment of Dennis was met with the universal exclamation of Who?

Agree.

He stuck with the same midfield soldiers that won a flag 4 years when everyone in the comp saw that the game was changing to more transition.

Only took him this year to realise that he actually had to change the game plan to a more running and transition style

He was pretty slow to adapt.

And even after he realised he still found it difficult to part with his favourites. This year should've been about getting midfield minutes into Rivers, Windsor, Langford even McVee one the season was done but Viney, Oliver and Petracca kept dominating midfield minutes. Petracca I can cop, one of Oliver or Viney as well but not both.

Even when he realized he didn’t change it

Pickett was them only new one

Oliver Viney trac got their usual minutes

His final move was Windsor but way too late by then

Even worse he found gems like rivers and then ignored him

Dug his own grave

I will never understand why Rivers wasn’t put into the midfield this year

His second half of 2024 as a full time midfielder was excellent and one of the few positives in an otherwise disappointing year

He then spends all preseason training as a midfielder as Goody begins to flag that we’re transitioning as team, both from a gameplan and personnel perspective

But then what happened? He didn’t play a single minute in there for the whole year, despite Viney, Trac and Oliver playing game after game in there, with their weaknesses being a significant factor behind us falling to 7 wins 13 losses

And I don’t want to hear about AMW’s injury meaning we needed another defender back there - by the time McVee came back into the team we had plenty of defensive cover to move Rivers out of defence

In the end it was emblematic of why Goody had to be moved on, and it will be very telling if he starts getting CBAs in the last three games

Yep, well, he did get midfield minutes. Perhaps you didn't watch the games. But we needed him in defence because McVee and Salem were not really cutting the mustard.

And much as I like Rivers and his energy and enthusiasm and ability, his field and goal kicking is on a par with Trac and Clarrie.

Is Gawn a literary scholar? These words read like the football equivalent of "No Man is an Island" by John Donne. Read on, and think of it being about Goodwin (and ignore the hyperlinks):

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Cringe af.

Out of curiosity, what is the main difference between now and in 3 weeks time.

In my mind the difference is simply respect….to the bloke that got us our first flag in 57 years.

In this podcast, Gerard Healy says the time for a strong board was 12 months ago, and that Melbourne signed Goodwin up to a two-year extension 12 months ago. Gerard Whateley goes along with this and claims the board defaulted back to the All Blacks consultant who’d done the football review the previous year. Healy then adds that  ‘they defaulted back to the All Blacks consultant who said give them (sic) a 2 year deal.’

They have got the timing and circumstances of the two year contract extension wrong. Goodwin’s contract extension was announced in August 2023, not last year.

That was the most frustrating thing to listen to. So many factual inaccuracies and half truths.

I disagree.
Rivers kicks might not hit every target but at least they spin correctly.
Unlike the full mongrels Trac and Clarrie let go.

He is doing a good job of selling the list and club at the moment on 360. Hasn't put a foot wrong. Very positive and accepting. Seems to have accepted that lack of forward connection and gameplan cost him his job.

Has said multiple times that things will change for the better and that the list is in good shape, that the future coach is walking into a good environment.

Also seems set to be at GWS next year.

He did a good job staying positive. The question around his thoughts on keeping Viney, Petracca and Oliver together for next year was shot down quickly. He said he wouldn’t elaborate and that’s essentially private. It was one of the few times he seemed to bristle at the questions.

GW tried incredibly hard to unearth negativity towards the board and admin however Goodwin played a straight bat.

He sounds like he already has a job lined up in Sydney.

All class on 360. Hope Goody does well wherever he ends up at next.

Handled himself with class and was super professional.

Yes, he's definitely going to be at the Giants next year i reckon.
