You can't get stuck into a team when they play with that level of commitment…they were just more efficient in front of goals …plus they benefited from appalling umpiring (I rarely blame umpires btw) …Lack of a key tall go to forward cost us again

We had a key tall he just plays with no physicality whatsoever. Petty has to be the most frustrating player on our list, so many times today he just had to make a contest and with the slightest body from Moore he just gave up competing. Also missed a sitter in the 1st half which proved costly.

Not sure if he's our version yet but yeah, that surprised me.
But who else?
Kolt was goin' ok.

Howes or JVR off were obvious choices surely

Frustrating result.

The May/Gawn incident will be forgotten by them by the morning. There are posts on here that’s there’s too much smiling after losses. Well this is the opposite isn’t it. A stern word said in the moment will not last long between professional players

May is a great player but a culture cancer - such an ordinary bloke

I'm not convinced he had a crack at max. I saw max react angrily to another player just a second before May. So bit harsh without knowing the facts.

Yeah, fair call.
I woulda pulled Howes and hoped JVR pulled something out his backside.

The composure of Sidebottom and Pendlebury v the opposite from Oliver and Petracca. I thought Oliver and Tracc were good today but the same old issues really stood out when you have a comparison like those two Collingwood champions. I'll give Lindsay the benefit of the doubt for his 50 - much worse hasn't been paid but Pickett knows better and his lack of discipline in big games really hurts. Fritsch goes from chocolate royals to boiled lollies in one play that ultimately costs the win. It was another one of those games that we have seen plenty of in the last few years but in so many ways we are a really good footy team.

The effort was outstanding, but we're just not a good enough football team to overcome the breathtakingly bad skill and decision making errors that we throw in every time we get some positive momentum. It felt as though almost every Collingwood goal was the result of a Melbourne turnover.

Perfect summary

I’ve been a JVR apologist for too long now. He’s a bust, does not know how to get himself in the game. He can’t be part of our plan moving forward. Bloke does next to nothing

JVR played 60% of game time and half of that was as a second ruckman, as has been the case his entire career.

We draft a key with forward with genuine potential and don't allow him to play his natural position for more than 5 minutes each quarter. It's no surprise he's struggling, I'd like to see more from him too but he's clearly being mismanaged.

Bad kicking cost us.

We had mo composure in those final minutes.

Again had a chance to win & move up the ladder.

We just blow chances time & time again.

Maybe playing 3 games in a row interstate is a good thing. I need a break from this team.

I'm amazed by some of the negativity here (...no I'm not). Almost everyone thought we'd be lucky to come with 5 goals of them, many expected a 10 goal thrashing, yet we lost by a single point!!

Sure it would have been great if the point was in our favour instead, but it wasn't. Despite all our mistakes, it ended up a toss up.

Of course we could have done better and we have problems.

But if that is all C'Wood can do against us then I'd say they must have problems too.

I’ve got Fritsch playing on from 20m out on repeat inside my head

Let us blow off steam for abit 😂

Another senior player that that lost composure and has zero awareness of the moment. Oldest trick in the book is to just go back and take your time, even chew minutes off the clock.

Blaming the umpires is easy but lazy

We are hopeless with composure and kicking for goal

Fritsch not spotting the free player in the goal square

Petracca and Oliver losing their minds with 2 mins left on the entry - turnover

Hopeless

I’m sacking everyone involved with our goal kicking ailments

Normally I'd concur...

But ...they were...meh.....mere.

You really can't touch a Pie..

What is it with birds... freekickhawthorn.. evenmorecollingwood.

I'm sure an unbiased observer would be thinking 🤔 🤔

The biggest difference, San umpiring...was skills.

It's not our forte

Or handball to Sparrow for a walk in goal

That was bizarre. He’s made for these games

To be fair he wasn’t having a great day

I know exactly what Max wanted to do. I just wish that he knew what we all know, which is that he can’t make that kick happen.

Max is a champion, but he has to know his limitations. Kicking is his.

As for May, I don’t know what he said so I won’t judge him. He was BOG for us and he is a passionate guy. I watched Clarry punched the ground when Max kicked it. They all felt it. I really don’t think Max would take it to heart. They’re big boys who care deeply. And thank god for that. If they didn’t care I’d be worried.

And made zero impact when he was up forward. Totally bereft of ability to create space. Today was his chance to make some sort of impact and he failed miserably. Don’t make the same mistake I have for the last few years and give him the benefit of the doubt, he is simply a below average football player at best and I’d be happy to see him off the list.

Melky hitting the post too 😭

Agree. It was a poor decision picking him. He is often in no-space nowhere near where the ball is going and today that was so obvious he didn't even crash too many packs - one I counted. His 3 marks were uncontested. No score. No impact. Shouldn't be in the side.

Kozzie needs to be more disciplined - that 50 and Fritsch's brain fade largely cost us the game at the end. Not to mention the poor kicking.

The umpiring was inconsistent but that is not why we lost.

We know this league is corrupt and Naicos is the Macedonian flopper, but fact of the matter is, we win that with just a bit more composure and smarts when we had momentum. We primarily lose momentum due to our own undoing.

Richmond were bottom 6 for free kicks across their 4 years of dominance and 3 flags.

Just really sick of losing to these [censored] and the same way time and time again. Yeah, we were brave and should be proud, but honorable losses for a group with this much top end established talent to compliment the younger blokes like Tholstrup, Langford etc shouldn’t be tolerated any longer.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
