Former West Coast premiership player Adam Selwood dies at 41

Former West Coast Eagles premiership player Adam Selwood dies just months after the death of his twin brother, former Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood.

This makes me feel sick.

Deepest condolences to the Selwood family. Again.

This is so bloody sad.

Just so devastating, and a timely reminder that players are human beings and you never know what they are going through off the field.

Would be nice if the media would take this as a wake up call.

I cannot imagine the depth of pain after losing two sons, brothers and a husband in such a short time.

We need to do more to assist with mental health.

When I first saw this on a Facebook group I thought it was an old post.

Terrible news, I feel for the Selwood family, to lose one family member is horrible enough. A second months later, inconceivable.

I won't pretend to have anything further to say, just want to acknowledge this is awful, and to give a nod to everyone who might be feeling that very worst of tensions.

Imagine losing your identical twin to suicide. How could you go on? I believe it was their shared birthday recently, which would have been even harder to deal with for him. Horrible situation, and you wonder what made it too hard to go on for both of them. I hope the family can share their story one day so it can possibly help others in a similar situation.

Just a word to the "blokes". It is not the way we usually roll, but be there for your mates, even when you think they're being D'heads. Sometimes the signs aren't always evident, but if they are mates, wrap your arms around them. Even if it is only metaphorically.

A hug can sometimes be the best medicine there is. Go well everyone.

Nice thoughts but hugs doesn’t help with clinical depression. Drs references to professional help is what gives those suffering a chance.

Imagine it’s a beautiful sunny day with clear blue sky and you dont notice it

imagine you hear your favourite song playing and it doesn’t move you.

imagine you are with your best friend but it gives no joy or enthusiasm

Imagine your problems, real or imagined are weighing you down so much that self harm- suicide seems like a positive step in a sea of negativity.

BTW Selwood, Tuck, Frawley... is that a disproportionate number of football families with these tragedies?

Unfortunately, it's not. 99% of suicides receive no publicity, the majority not being concussion related. We lose around 10 people per day in Australia. It's probabably more, as many can't be classified as such with certainty. 3 in 4 are males.

The only positive when a well known former footballer takes his life, is that it brings a taboo subect out in the open for thought and discussion. This increases the chance of saving others. I have no doubt, this is Danny Frawleys legacy.

It's tragic, it's heartbraking, it's indescribable, but the story of the Selwood twins may well help us prevent the suicide of others. I hold this belief logically, but also emotionally, as a way of dealing with the loss of friends I've known.

I meant specifically suicides of AFL players. You wrote a good post though.

I can’t imagine what the Selwood family is going through. I lost my cousin to suicide when we were in our early 20’s and even 25 years later, I still struggle with it. It’s the worst feeling in the world to keep wondering if you could have done anything to help. I ended up as a social worker working with people who have mental health and AOD issues because I wanted to do at least a little bit to reduce the number of families who have to bury their child.

Definitely check in on your mates and don’t be afraid to have a conversation with them. I’m not saying that alone will save someone, but it may be what they need to reach out to a professional to get help. It’s awful.
