STATS GEEKS.

ANY TEAMS THAT HAVE KICKED MORE POINTS THAN GOALS IN A SEASON?

OR

HOW MANY TIMES IN A SEASON THAT A TEAM KICKS MORE POINTS THAN GOALS?

9 times so far this year, the previous 3 years it was 8 for the season. Highest under Goodwin was 12 in 2021 inc the 3 finals.

Also have kicked 5+ points in a qtr 10 times this season, 14 last year

Let's not waste these next 9 games with some fanciful illusion we'll sneak into the 8 or trying to chase wins that will amount to nothing.

This is now the time to prepare us for 2026. Play Jefferson and JvR up front. Put Petty down back

May + Melksham to Casey. Viney to a forward pocket.

Use this as an opportunity. I know Goodwin is a self-described "winner", but it's now about the big picture. If he's still chasing wins this season instead of formulating a game plan that will challenge in 2026, then he can go.

I can't see how senior players will react going into this mode. LIke most of the first 5 games, we would be inept and bringing any sort of sustained pressure in the second half of the season. I fully expect only winning 2-3 games of the last 9 at best. Goody has to get tough with his mates and start dropping a-graders if they are unwilling to bring it.

Are you serious? - No way May plays at Casey.

His form has been good and he's of also of value to the team in a mentoring capasity and setting the standard. I'd even like him to play up forward with some of our developing forwards. He'd make them walk taller playing along side them and if they're not doing the required team things and/or committing to the contest, I think a Maysy rev-up could actually be a good thing for them too.

Melksham should also be played when fit for similar reasons and how funny would it be to see him play in a forward line with May.

I'd be quite OK with Lever and/or possibly even Petty being dropped back to Casey to find some form and hunger. Would love to see T Mac given the opportunity to get to 250 games this season - his service to the club and form this year deserves it.

Sick of seeing us wasting games on Laurie. Would far rather we get some more games into Tholstrup, Kynan Brown, Adams, Woey jnr, Sestan, Culley and possibly one or two others like Sharp and Verrall.

Have loved his season to date, but I think Langford looked tired and lacked impact on Sunday, so could do with a rest.

Also time to end the Winsor experiment at half back put the kid back on the wing and let him play his natural game.

The irony would be if by playing guys who are keen as to prove them selves, changing things around a bit and releasing the shackles of expectations as bit that we actually play with more freedom, flare and start attacking more effectively and winning games.

We were dead after round 5. Sure the wins against Freo & Brisbane were nice surprises, but the weight of evidence from the past 2 years strongly supports the view that we are a terrible football team.

Or a terribly coached football team

No

It was born of hope and I salute Adam for having that hope.

Let's keep it open to measure those green shoots for next year.

It was a cracker of a thread - a bold idea well argued. I don't think the name is true any more, but it has got some interesting conversations happening.

Delusional at best!

Just checked, still dead.

But our carcass on the side of the road should be an interesting watch; sometimes stops traffic etc and gets moved into positions such that people pass by and wonder if we're still alive.

But nah :-(

In what way? They basically quote the statistic's of five or so players ..all correct & then acknowledge our new /newish players. Doesn’t say to me we should be a team that’s flying . I think West Coast could do exactly the same thing with their list. Trac is brilliant at clearances ..his kicking is dreadful ..but not sure it does anyone any good to put that in the mid season report. After all we have many posters who are more than happy to post about negatives ad nauseum. It’s quite nice to read something a little bit positive

Well acknowledgment Of 5 wins. But 9 losses is not the way most supporters will be pleased .

Surely you are not pleased with this result so far.

It’s a con job for the companies that sponsor the demons. And also for possibly 55% of the supporters base.

In my view we have had errors of judgment in team selection, team strategy, playing positions, team fitness, and kicking to position and ( ha ha) goal kicking.

And I know footy, played 100 games of F grade amateurs Reserves ! ( smiling)

I do agree about the corporate spin job.

I'm not expecting much for rest of season but am intrigued to see how it plays out.

We're really an enigma wrapped in a comic.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
