    Presumably Fritsch, Trac and Melksham are going to be played as marking/leading forward targets to support JVR, and particularly when Gawn's on the bench and JVR's in the ruck.

    This could be spectacularly terrible. Everytime in the past we’ve gone in with a small forward line we’ve consistently bombed it to no one.

    No idea what Goody and the match committee are thinking, but he may fall on his own sword if we get smashed.

    There’s really no rhyme or reason with our team selections this year. The structure of our side has been consistently changing, so how are we trying to play?

    If they want to go the small forward line we are going to have to be precise with our kicking and we will also have to put on high pressure for most of the game. Don’t do that and we will lose this game by 6 goals easily.

    It's not the changes I would've made but I get it. We absolutely suck at marking inside 50, so let's run a small forward line to hopefully force better shot selection.

    I personally don't see Sharp or Spargo in the 22 but our depth is just not where it needs to be, so it is what it is.

    Remember last year when we had that great 2 weeks this time last year when we knocked off Adelaide and Port?

    Lets just hope we have success this weekend

    We absolutely have the least talent and goal kicking power in our forward line in the whole comp except for maybe Richmond. Our Key forward stocks while ok for numbers are really lacking in quality compared to most of the competition.

    Hopefully JVR rediscovers his form ASAP.

    We need to find out if guys like Turner, Fullerton and Jefferson and even Kentfield when fit, have what it takes. If Fullerton continues to bang down the door in the VFL we surely have to give him a go !

    Our small forwards too, apart from Pickett who is now more a mid just don’t play like regular scoring threats either.

    I am perplexed as to why other senior players were not dropped and Tom Fullarton given a chance to play?

    Our forward line looks very small.

    Simon Goodwin is certainly coaching for his career.

    That was incredible. But it wasn’t two weeks. It wasn’t even a week. It was two matches five days apart. When the fixture was revealed remember how angry we all were? And rightly so. But we pulled off two wins against the odds. Both wins were fantastic but the win over Port was extra special. It was even worth the drive-by bottle of water to the head that I copped while waiting at the traffic lights after the match.

    Lots of angry blaming going on of Goodwin, then lines like “play Fullerton”, “drop Fritta”, “drop Spargo”, “drop Viney”, etc…

    I see it that for two years now we have been trying to transform our game, recruiting quick skilled players to attack from the half back through the corridor, a recognition that forward entries from contested play often turns it over and hurts us… the transition was abandoned last season due to injuries, and this season we are only now getting back the key players critical to making this transition click, Pickett last week, XL this week and hopefully McVee and Kolt next week.

    In part I suspect it’s easier to teach a new game style to new talented kids than have our older crew change the way they’ve played for years. But, and a point Goody has made repeatedly, these things take time.

    So buckle up, quit bitching and buy in to what our club, coach and players are trying to do.

    If it clicks, we beat the Dons and the moaners can chew their gristle in silence for a week. If it doesn’t, well it’s another week of angry whining on D’land, and I’ll just tune out and hope the club continues with it’s transformation the following week.

    Spoils to the brave.

    The likelihood is we won't ever know the answer for those two DJ as Simon refuses to play one of them and the former's potential form and/or settlling in with the other forwards / mids and learning his role / how play the role and improve on playing the role (at the senior level) is treated with contempt.

    I don't think rushing back a player from a broken hand is smart at all. Six weeks for fractures and hands are tricky. They did it with Oliver last year and it didn't go well at all

    Would not the strong internal message be to omit players who aren’t, won’t or can’t play to expectations of the new game plan? At least to a level to reward players showing good form at Casey. Gawn mentioned on MMM we spent 2022-2023 trying to capture the magic of 2021 and we now realise the game has changed. I sense Goody is still trying to capture it by backing in premiership players that don’t fit the new direction due to stage of career, amount of preseason, lack of growth or lack of desire.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
