Hah. My partner goes for Carlton - I said on Wednesday it was good we played on Thursday and Friday night because then we could just enjoy our weekend. Nailed that, unfortunately.

We suck.

On the downside though, a bit more time before the next loss would be nice.

effort was there but everything we do is so laboured. all huff and puff with little inspiration

skills not at AFL level. can't execute simple handballs

we're cooked. time to plan for draft and trade period. trade out some senior players and bring in some more youngsters and build our next team to challenge

and find a new coach. Goody ain't the man to take us forward.

Please stop catastrophising. Yes, it's bad right now but we still have some powerhouse players. Goodie needs to blend the new guys into the team and its new game plan.

We were better tonight. In with a chance before another Q4 fadeout.

It’s a 4 Quarter game, so i don’t buy that excuse

So yeah I went to the game tonight. Just got home. Thoughts:

  • effort was way better

  • Forward line is non existent

  • Engine room in the middle is ok at times (Max was good tonight), but it’s a shadow of its former self

  • We got out marked like crazy

  • Some good passages of play, but the players don’t know where their teammates are most of the time, so often get stuck with the ball and nowhere to go except a 50/50

  • Petty - gah. I really had hopes the guy would get back to what he was, but he can’t jump anymore, and has no energy or intent

  • Spargo - still only second game back but time is running out to show he has something

Not really… the Cats were all over us, but off target for the first three quarters. We were never a genuine chance. Sure our pressure was ok at times, but we were never able to sustain it. We seem to be unable to rid ourselves of the desire to just bomb the ball long into the forwards… watch the Cats, time and time again, they were able to find players with space in the forward line and hit them on the chest. We looked like a team without a clue and without a plan. We looked lost!

There’s just one word that sums up how I feel: Flabbergasted!

Also umpires can gagf'd as far as i'm concerned, took away all our momentum in the third when we were coming.

Just like a proverbial punch in the bollocks.

Never liked Geelong. [censored] place.

Also, I do not know if I’ve said it before, but why the [censored] do we wrestle in the CB when they are really not very good at it?

We currently have one of the best clearance rucks the game has seen.

Max can literally put the ball anywhere in the square. He doesn’t get beaten.

The three midfielders should be playing as loose as possible. Starting maybe 10 m behind him and running forward at different angles to give Max three different hit to possibilities.

This method is very difficult to defend against. By playing a congested midfield, we are playing into the oppositions hands and curtailing what should be a massive advantage.

Absolute rubbish… we have no forward line, no effective mids, still just play up the wings, cannot hit a player on the chest to save ourselves, our skills simply aren’t up to scratch… awful to watch!

We can’t make 3 consecutive possessions… mark neeld days

We’ve been spanked last 3 weeks. An experienced team playing in patches ain’t going to cut it.

The cultural rot that set in over the last few years is now manifest on the field

I remember the neeld era. Recent performances are giving me flash backs

Make a proper assessment of where we are and plan accordingly. Tassy coming into the comp in a few years. We can’t afford delusional thinking.

Hunter, Billings, Schache, McAdam - those are recruiting decisions that wouldn't have happened under Roos' watch, or Todd Viney's watch.

Hunter was more than useful when he came across, McAdam we may never know (injury).

As for the rest and what happened under Roos, Tommy Bugg, Ben Kennedy, Pat McKenna, Ben Newton say hello, even some of the people we drafted/rookied. There were more than a few doozies there. And let's not even mention Heritier Lumumba.

You're rewriting history.

Exactly! should we not be able to play separate to our man at CB and back ourselves in.?? This wrestleing sheeeit does my head in

How's the atmosphere down at GMHBA? What a boring game of footy fueled by zero atmosphere. We had some nice moments and a few players showed glimpses, but gee wiz we're boring to watch overall. So were Geelong for that matter, but I suspect it was them just doing merely enough all night to keep us at arms length.

I'm not talking only about their football ability. I'm talking about their character, intensity, desire...Hunter was a bad influence on several in the group off field and for a senior player, didn't set an example to the group (and actually set a bad cultural example). Billings and schache play with zero intensity. McAdam perhaps harsh, sure.

Point is the character and belief of the playing group is the sum of the parts. These might seem small flaws within individuals but when you add 3, 4, 5 questionable characters a year the shape and complexion of the group changes over time - subtly at first and then at critical mass.

Bugg, Kennedy and Newton weren't amazing players but put in. Bugg did a lot for the character of the group and made the likes of Watts a much better player for a few years there as part of our rise as at the very least, he could inspire confidence and gumption in his team mates.

You're missing the point with McKenna. Never made the grade, but didn't negatively impact culture or standards.

Lamb, Richardson, Goodwin allowed these types of flaws and efforts into our club...it changes the culture slowly. Others see what Hunter gets away with, or that half assed efforts get you a game if you're Schache or Billings.

Standards & Culture, Standards & Culture, Standards & Culture.

I don't understand how any of you who followed this team from the dark days and watched it turn can't see how things have changed on this front.

Actually a good chance that he is leading the votes in the Keith Bluey Truscott medal. Great work ethic and does the little things that many in the team aren’t. Chin up!!!!!

Compare who the cats, lions, pies & hawks have traded in, 3 of them are premiers, we won a flag and we’re in the premiership clock yet couldn’t attract good talent or a fwd to capitalise on our 500 fwd 50s!

We never ever looked like we could do enough to win. Playing behind the ball and chopping it around the backline, we never had players up the ground when we did break away. Goodwin is now coaching to mitigate the damage on the scoreboard.

Not uncommon for coaches on their way to the sack.

Billings character and standards is of high level.

Nick Reiwoldt said this last year in one of our early coverage and i take his absolute word especially coming from someone whos known to be manic and elite with his preparation a driving standards.

Billings issue is his consistency and development that has been his biggest downfall and I put that down to the [censored] poor development at St Kilda.

That has absolutely nothing to do with standards and culture at the Dees.

Ben Kennedy was a bad influence to the group due to his off field activities. You can figure that out yourself.. I have had this confirm to me previously by an ex Melbourne player. He was a bad influence on the likes of Harmes and Hogan.

McKenna and Ben Newton fall into the same bracket as Harry Sharp. Genuine list cloggers that add no value to the team when called upon.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
