    It wasn’t that Toby killed Howes, it was that Howes killed Howes. 

    2 GWS goals came from his errors like skipping over the footy in the middle of the ground or coughing up a bad handball in the goal square. And generally there were plenty of occasions for him to get a good fist in at the contest or body the ball and he didn’t take it.

    I don’t like to say it but he’s soft and there’s no reason to tolerate soft players when it’s not their first go at afl footy.

    Goodwin didn't seem overly concerned and suggested he might be a test for Gold Coast in round 3.

    So, you'd imagine he'll be back by round 4 V Geelong.

    Howes always gets done by small forwards

    This is the NM team from R1 that were in their game vs doggies to 3QT and then faded in the last.

    Petty to Larkey, TMac can take Darling, the Howes role would be v Zurhaar to free up Lever for intercept marking (worked well yesterday); but I'm not sure Howes is the matchup.

    I can see three tall(ish) forwards against this backline and under the roof. I'm sure we learnt something from playing them a couple of weeks ago in this regard -  Disco in for AJ the only change for mine. 

    Overall we're far too strong in the guts.

    An annoying downside to Melbourne putting itself into the early first round through trade and natural position in the last couple of seasons is that I'm aware of the potential of a bunch of those young North kids.

    It's nothing like the GWS list but there's enough talent in there that if they all happen to have their tails up on the same day, they can be very powerful.

    In a way, it is the perfect game for emphasizing the importance of doing the basics, the defensive efforts, and the general team things correctly, because getting those things right would definitely be enough to get the win.

    We're only in danger if we start acting like we're not in danger. The Isandlwana principle.

    I think Logue did a hamstring and Comben also came off sore, so will be interesting to see what happens with their backline.

    Obviously Archer also suspended, but I expect him to get off as that is a ridiculous thing to be suspended for.... but I thought that about Kozzy last year also

    Jeffo wont get dropped after 2 goals in shizen conditions and in the perfect conditions at marvel has a chance to really shine.

    So we're back to JvR doing the back up ruck work?

    Or maybe TMac and ? takes Darling.

    Goodwin has said things have to change. I reckon JvR honing his forward craft by staying put is one of those things.

    TMac is a great defender. Or forward. Tenth in the Bluey last year. But he ain't no ruckman. Neither is Petty.

    JvR is pretty good in the ruck, but we need him forward.

    I agree Disco should come in. Not sure who goes out. Should be Fritsch, but that won't happen.

    That would be four tall forwards plus Max down there half the time. The answer to our fowardline issues is not more tall guys.

    Without getting shot at, I'd like to remind people that we just lost to a widely rated Top 4 team by 3 points while we fielded 6 debutants and didn't have Kozzy or May.

    We were able to stop GWS from getting the ball out quickly and scoring at will for (almost) the entire game.

    I don't think we are going to make too many changes. 

    Building momentum and experience are key.

    There will be changes through the season, but I can't see too many for this game outside of covering suspensions.

After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren.       It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
