If you think the crowd was bad on Sunday, imagine what the crowd (or lack thereof) V West Coat at Marvel in early August  is going to be. Particularly if it’s a Sunday 4:40 and/or we’re out of business due to continually losing close games.

A very specific scenario right there, BBP.

🤔

Idea 1: Rather than stacking the change rooms with family and friends the club should send every young member a one use access pass to the match day change rooms. (Clearly booking ahead would be needed) Get them in, give them a guernsey, a signed footy and a couple of photos with their favourite players.

Idea 2: Make under 10 memberships free or virtually free with every adult membership sold. Then invite the kids to training where they actually get a run around with a player/s. Like a Melbourne Auskick session. Choco and the rehab players could do it and the likes of Trac and co can join in briefly. Give the kids signed photos.

Idea 3: Every adult member who brings an under 10 to the footy gets a scarf for that kid.

You have to engage the kids every year during their early years. There’s hundreds of things the club can do. I guarantee there’s a few crew on the payroll who’d love to get this stuff happening

They're so costly GW given we play a brand of footy that doesn't allow us to win too many blow outs, but conversely not allow too many blow outs the other way.

A little more composure in the dying minutes and we're 13-10 last year and 1-0 to start this season.

True. We especially need to learn how to defend a narrow lead with a couple of minutes left on the clock

Rome wasn't built in a day, Neil. Their social media pressence is broad and appeals to younger generations. Their style has also been adopted by several other clubs across the league. The only way to grow supporterbase is by targeting young people. No one who has already picked a team is going to swap past the age of 12. That our club's supporterbases demographic is disproporitonately older should be a cause for concern.

This topic is always triggering, to everyone no matter what your views are.

IMO the crowd on Sunday was completely within what ought to have been expected. Scheduling a game against the lowest or second-lowest supported interstate side against the Grand Prix was always going to result in a low crowd, and then add to that the rain, and it's not just unsurprising, but honestly pleasing, that the crowd was 23,000+.

If you watch on TV, you don't get it, because the MCC is consistently 10x more packed than anywhere else in the ground and you can't see the MCC from the broadcast wing.

In 2022-23, our home crowds as a percentage of our membership were, I believe, the 2nd highest in the league, behind only Fremantle. Our raw home crowd numbers are of course lower than Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon etc., but they have 1.5-2 times as many members as we do.

By and large, criticism of our crowds is misguided.

However...

I have been, and remain, of the view that our club has too great a proportion of supporters who choose to withhold their attendance as some form of "protest" against the club. My view was ratified last year when this debate came up after our game against North. Posters readily admitted on here that they chose not to go simply because they were "sick of Goodwin" or "sick of our low scores" or that they'd "go when the team starts playing the way I like".

IMO, if you choose to withhold your attendance as a form of protest, you are killing the club from the inside.

When I say this, I always say the next bit too - I do not, for one second, begrudge a single person who cannot go to a game because of cost, family, health, distance, work, or all the other sorts of things which make us unable to go. Almost no one can go every week. My comments above are directed solely to the portion of our supporters who can go (financially, health-wise, time-wise, family-wise), but simply choose not to.

@Bring-Back-Powell asked earlier what will happen with our West Coast crowd if we keep losing close games. I would suggest that something that might help us win a close game is a loud crowd in our favour. So instead of asking what happens to the crowd after the losses, perhaps we should ask whether showing up in greater numbers earlier might help us win those games instead?

@Dr. Gonzo earlier posted that everyone gets to make their own choices, and I agree - ultimately, you decide if you want to go or not (assuming you can). But if you choose not to go, when you otherwise could, IMO you don't then get to complain about, for example, our home games being shifted away from the G and to Marvel, or our games being in the worst timeslots, or our club not getting the same level of funding as other clubs. Whether we like it or not, this sport cares about crowds, and they are important.

All very good points

Another problem is parents who allow their kids to support other sides. I’ve no idea how this ever happens. My kids were never given a choice, they didn’t have a choice, there was no choice, choice wasn’t a word used at the time, as far as they were concerned choice was between lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork. Their Aunt tried to nab them and she wasn’t invited over again. Only when indoctrination was complete were other teams discussed. As far as my kids knew there was only one team. My 3 serious partners all became Demons, my current partner’s son barracked for Collingwood. I told him either barrack for Melbourne or never come to the footy with me. He too is now a Demon. Doesn’t matter how you do it but it must be done. Harden them in the fires of barracking for a small club with a superiority complex. Then take them forth to the G and yell till their ears hurt and their soul rejoices.

You need to compromise, W. Try to get involved in something she’s interested in. This is what I do. My sons don’t get into footy. I watch MAFS (I know right) because my older two watch it (again, I know right) and we have a group chat going during each episode which makes it fun. My youngest isn’t into MAFS. He has Asperger’s so if you wanna know anything (and everything, literally EVERYTHING) about 17th century Northern European naval artillery… I’m your gal 👍🏽😅

MAFS?! That's almost worse than being a Collingwood supporter! 🤣🤣🤣

People don't like being told what to do. Children are no different. If they're swearing a lot of not using their cutlery you can keep guiding or disciplining them to change that. But it's not going to work for team choice. As a young tacker I chose North Melbourne because my favourite colour is blue. It was pretty superficial as probably the only time I ever saw them play 'live' was the 1978 Grand Final on colour telly and years later Carey's team's flags didn't thrill me at all. When Barassi moved from North to Melbourne Dad convinced me to move over with the coach and share the Dees with him and my brother and understood the only games where I'd see North was when North were playing Melbourne at the G. Force wouldn't have worked.

Great efforts there Roost it.

But on the other hand I bucked my Collingwood supporting dad and Hawthorn supporting mum and look how I turned out. Easily one of the best MFC fans in the business.

Quite. To my 5 year old up here in Canberra - football is about Demons and Max Gawn playing other colours and that is that.

yes and no; depends upon what the return on investment looks like from an engagement to activation to conversion ratio

i'm guessing, but i suspect ours would be very low, whereas gw$ have very different aims and outcomes with their social strategy

Here's to you converting many more serious partners into Demons fans in the future!

Can I argue that the topic of this thread is disrespectful to Demon supporters,  Not saying that the topic or discussion is wrong  just that it needs to be worded differently

Advertising is a pretty intangible activity at the best of times. Think it would be foolish for us to stick up our noses at modern promotion activities and I don't think it would cost nearly as much as you seem to believe. As mentioned by another poster Hawthorn have also embraced a similar strategy. We are currently putting resources into producing media and other communications but my point was more that what we're producing comes of as stale and bland. I think we can do better than what we are currently outputting in that area.

Reminds me of this Video - from Captain's day and they were trying to rank the captains by followers on instagram.

Danger makes a dumb remark about our supporters being at the snow and Maxy says most of our supporters are 60 and don't have instagram, and he'd be higher on the list if it was facebook etc.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
