So, onto tonight's game.

Barring a draw, there will be good news (one of them will lose) and bad news (one of them will win).

It's a choice between Ebola and Meningococcal.

Daniel Hoyne said on Monday that 4 of the last 5 premierships were won by teams that were top three in ball movement. By that he meant their goals emanated largely from their half back line. The inside 50 count was not a factor.

Our 2021 premiership was the exception.

This gets mentioned a lot. Our method is not the easy way or common way premierships are won. Probably why we failed to win multiple flags.

The sooner we move to a turnover maximising , ball movement focused game plan , the better chance we’ll have at winning a flag. Hopefully well start to see more of this this year.

I only had 'half and ear' to the conversation. Whately (?) asked Hoyne about the importance of I50's cf ball movement and Hoyne gave the example of last year's GF where the Swans had only two fewer I50's (49-51) but lost by 10 goals.

Whately then asked who you'd draft first - a good mid-fielder (clearance player) or a good half back.

I don't think Hoyne gave a definitive answer (both equally important, or have their role).

BTW I don't know what 'ball movement ' means, or how you measure it. Scores from transition from your back half?

I barely listen or watch any footy media anymore. I can't stand most of it. Hoyne is an exception. I really like him - he's the only media analyst i listen to regularly (via the sportsday pod on spotify which separates all the segments out meaning i don't have to listen to the other guff.

I hadn't listened to him yet this year - did so on the train to work this morning.

Ball movement has been a hobby horse for Hoyne for a few seasons now. He was right on to it as something to 'watch' with the way the Pies started playing under McRae in 2022, and of course in 2023.

As you suggest by ball movement he is talking about transition from the 'defensive half'. As you suggest that is measured by goals from the defensive half.

By the by its important to note that defensive half means the defensive side of the center line NOT a team's defensive area (eg from half back, or inside D50), as it's often conflated with. I say important because i think sometimes people assume transition happens from deep in a team's defence.

The other key stat related to transition and ball movement is turnovers. The best transition teams (ball movement) create lots of turnovers thru their pressure and then move the ball down the field effectively (like GWS v pies).

It’s not Rocket Science, so why have we not been playing that style?

Create a Turnover and the opposition is automatically on the back foot ….

@M_9 - please do not share facts from someone who knows his facts on Demonland.

Well, its not quite a fact.

Hoyne didn't say it inside 50s were not a factor for those premiership winning teams - far from it.

Of course it's a factor - just not as big a factor as it once was (reflecting the change in how the game is now played by tge best teams).

No but his clear mantra, for the 3 years I’ve been listening to him, is that the game has moved away from stoppage and territory dominance. Success now largely comes from being able to score off turnover and defend off your own turnover.

We know that in 2022-24 we struggled with the turnover game relative to better sides. The big question for me on Sunday is what we try to do in that area of the game to improve on the last three years.

That's a lot of new faces   Blimey teddy

Completely agree with your point Binman. But the data is the data. Unless a team can slingshot with precision off half back on a regular basis, ones chances of grabbing a flag are significantly reduced.

I loath them both 100%
i just want to see big hits tonight

I loathe everything Essendon - jumper, players, supporters, arrogant board members, Dodoro, Sheedy etc... - and revel in their finals losing streak. Even my loathing for Pies or Blues is dwarfed by it. But there is something brazen, arrogant and totally unlikable about the current Hawks team that makes me want to slap people. Strutting around, selfies on the ground after games, stupid pre-organised goal celebrations. Yuk!!

I won't go as far to say that I will barrack for the Bummers (never, no) but I do want them to win. Unfortunately I think the Hawks will win by 4-6 goals.

Interested how a first up, against a already played one round, game goes, especially the first and last quarters

I'm actually tempted to go for Essendon tonight. My rationale being that their season will inevitably unravel spectacularly at some point and it's that anticipation I want to savour. In contrast Hawthorn need the arrogance knocked out of them now.

Good insight right now into the conditioning perspective because Hawthorn have already played a full intensity game where as Essendon had the week off.

Giants will be the same.

It's truly amazing how consistently the Hawthorn football club produces entire lists of hateable players.

Essendon, stop falling over.

And look for options better. Loose players not being spotted going into F50.

Hawthorn running forward looking very well drilled. And stuff me they can kick.

Yep. They really do embody the colours of their guernsy.

Annoying how they have just come from now where to be this good. They were just talking about how to set expectations with members for < 5 wins.

These foot skills by Hawthorn are a bit disturbing.

But not as disturbing as the state of the G. – with the best part of two more games on it before we are there. Pies should be playing somewhere else.

  • GAMEDAY: Fremantle

It’s Game Day, and the Demons return to the MCG wounded, undermanned and desperate. Still searching for their first win of the season, Melbourne faces a daunting task against the Fremantle Dockers. With key pillars missing at both ends of the ground, the Dees must find a way to rise above the adversity and ignite their season before it slips way beyond reach. Will today be the spark that turns it all around, or are we staring down the barrel of a 0–6 start?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
