AFL website has it if you click on the match and then go to player stats

Outside of conversion, we won this game. Our stats and control of the game outside of the second quarter were strong.

Not convinced on our new ball movement, but our contest and defence were back on show yesterday. It was a big step froward from last year, and looked like a less powerful version of our 2021-2023 seasons. Our stars were up and about, and seeing Trac and Clarry fit and firing was the biggest positive on the day. With Gawn, Trac, Clarry, Viney all fit, we'll be competitive this year. Can pretty much lock in finals IMO barring bad injuries again, but can't see us being at the pointy end anymore due to lack of firepower up forward.

Outside winning, yesterday's practice match over in WA was as good as I'd hoped for against a likely top 4 team. We gave some of our kids a taste of AFL level against strong opposition so they can experience the level they need to reach. Langford and Lindsey both look like they'll have cameos this year. AJ contested well and will be valuable if he converts his opportunities to score.ย

On the negative side, we've got some battlers out there still. Billings is a momentum killer. Bowey hasn't been up to AFL standard for a few years now. Howes is still a deer in headlights at times. Chin and Disco were MIA. These guys are all on the fringe of best 23, but we need them to step up as the stars can't do it all themselves. The reason we were so good in 2021 was those lessers lights all nailing their roles.ย

The JVR injury was the black mark on the day. We really need him fit for round 1 as not only is he a key target up forward, he's one of the few who converts consistently!ย

I couldn't watch it all but the few parts I did watch revealed that we are much better with Langdon and Windsor patrolling the wings. They run up and down their wings so much that they might as well be starting from HBF.

Bring them back to where they belong and work out other solutions for the midfield and backline.

Chandler's TOG was 84%. Woeful disposal numbers, with 3 kicks and no handballs.

The AFL stats are a joke, for example, like hits outs, the clearance number is a rubbish indicator - it just measures quantity not quality, impact or outcome. The key clearance related stat is scores from clearances - which is not on the AFL website despite them owning a share in Champion data.ย ย

There's no sugarcoating Chin's disposal numbers but playing as the small forward (playing Koz's old role) his key KPI is pressure.

And the AFL site doesn't have that data (though i'd note he only laid 2 tackles, only one of which was inside 50 - by way of comparison Clarry and Fritter, yes fritter, had 2 inside 50 tackles).ย

The other important stat for Chin (that the AFL actually does have, but not for this match) are the total distance he covers in a match and the distance he covers at speed. That data is available, though frustratingly only for the for the top 5 players at the Telstra tracker section of the AFL app.ย

That data is really important as an indicator for our high half forwards, a role Chin played last year, given how important those players' defensive and offensive running is (ie to defend turnover and provide options ahead of the ball on transition).

it is less relevant if Chin is playing a true small forward, but important, nonetheless.ย

Chandler was on for 84% of gameย  - for 3 kicks only

Johnson is undersized but has heart.

Lindsay cameo on boundary all class.ย

Langford will make progress this year.

Turner is going to be a handful with Fritta, Van Rooyen and Kossie firing.

Lot to like, few negatives but Iโ€™m staying positive.

ย

Bailey will fire when he starts improving goal conversion. Until then He's just a target at the moment. Absolutely unreliable and kills opportunities.ย

My saints tragic friend says the same. No loss for them. If he gets a game its alarm bells time.

wow that is poor output. I thought he might have missed a half as he was so absent.

Agree Chandler offers plenty of pressure and running but he has to increase those numbers.

Importantly, he is probably the straightest kick for goal in the team! Just needs to get it!

I agree with most of this, but our ground defence was a bit shaky at times and we need to get better at protecting the middle of the ground.

What really hurts us is that opp know he doesn't have, nor has ever shown, second efforts or do the 1% so they double team someone else.

And yet ok to pot shot Jeffo ( for perceived weaknesses) but not Fritsch? I'd drop Fritsch on last nights effort but they wont! Chandler also has done nothing for a long while and should spend time at Casey! I don't give a fat rats clacker if he provides more pressure than a thousand jet tyres going through a bees diaphram... KICK SOME GOALS for a change!

The old firm were back and firing, Clarrie, Viney, Tracc, Gawn were great. We won all the stats that supposedly count, clearances, contested & uncontested possessions, inside 50โ€™s. But still lost by 3 goals. Itโ€™s only a practice game but I ask what value has the coaching squad added to our game plan/style over the off season?ย

Knockout question, EH. The preferred option still appears to be the long bomb and kicking to a contest - all low percentage in terms of gain, separation, providing the opportunities .... etc.

We were out all afternoon and had visitors last night so I was just sneaking a look at the player stats during the game, I thought that Chandler and Disco must have been injured as their stats werenโ€™t moving like everyone elseโ€™s. I watched the game when everyone left. Surprised that no one is mentioning Steven May, he was brilliant as was Salem, Tracc, Clayton, Mr Ed, Max and Spaz. Boweyโ€™s turnovers really stood out as they cost us dearly, as did Billings lack of finishing skills, what was Fritta thinking. His job is finishing. Windsor, Lindsay, Langford, Sharpe and AJ will all be better for the run. We sorely missed Rooey, Petty, TMac and Judd McVee. Letโ€™s hope that Jack Henderson can step up to the plate. The big takeaway for me is our fitness, we ran the game out in 32+ degree heat on the other side of the country and had 14 shots for goal in the last quarter but only managed 5.9. We won all the contested KPIโ€™s and had 63 inside 50โ€™s, we are on the way back. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

Disco played like he was at a Disco and was largely MIA!

Bowey kicks for a clearance - at least 50% of the time - without foresight, without looking for a target, nor hitting a target - as he once did in his earlier days with the Dees. Heads up applies to backmen as well, Bowser, without declaring intent too obviously. You can return to superb delivery skills if it pleases you as that would please many a Demons fan awaiting an expectant result.ย ย

A few good things to take out of that game and there is a lot that would have given the players and coaches a bit to contemplate.ย
ย

Extended periods of dominance, good clearance work and good at the contest all good. Inaccurate goal kicking and some loose defence, not so good.ย
ย

I would take the good with the bad out of that practice match and use it to drive home lessons with regard to setup and preparation for set shoots.ย
ย

a question: If we were so on top in clearances as the stats suggest, why would we not up the pressure at the contest as much as possible to force stoppages? It may not have been attractive football but it might have been winning football.ย

Goal kicking training every session would be a bloody start. ย Canโ€™t believe they donโ€™t do this religiously. No point gettin our hands on the pill if we are gunna kick points majority of the time.ย

Can't believe the vitriol directed at Fritsch. He's been our most reliable forward over the past 4 years, and yet some are pointing the finger at him based on 2 quiet preseason games. He's the least of our problems.

He only played one of the gamesโ€ฆ. So one quiet pre season game

FWIW after one praccy and noting that it's just one pre-season warm up so not casting anyone in the bin at this point.ย  Comments purely relate to this game in isolation...

POSITIVES:

Clarry โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

Tracc โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

Big Mย  โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

Windsor but more dangerous and effective when he pushed higher up the ground.ย  Back to the wing for mine.ย  โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

AJ - Early jitters but improved as the match went on.ย  I like โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

Kozzy - only one quarter to go by but electrifying from the get go.ย  Needs to play 80 / 20 Small Forward / CBAs (or thereabouts) once he returns though imo.ย  We need his goal kicking smarts and ability to convert.ย  Our constant inaccuracy is a momentum / coach killer.

Sparrow โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ - has shown VG early pre-season and in-seaaon form before though.ย  Needs to bring this level or so most weeks.

PASS MARK

Langdon but like others i feel he needs to get back to the wing pronto for Billings

NQRS THAT WEREN'T AT THE LEVEL

Billings

Howes

Bowey

Chandler

Woe - albeit with limited TOG.ย  Needs a bigger hit out to see where he's really at.ย  Looks slow both across the ground and with decision making though and will need to start showing off other assets this season if he's to gain some traction and a regular spot in the 22.

He did some good things but he seems to have mastered the panicked dump kick turnover that can be so costly, as it was today. He didnโ€™t have that in his game in the early days.ย

It's hard to know with Boweyย  Even though he got a bit of the ball he butchered it and was ineffective against their smalls who created havoc. He is small and not very aggressive but usually highly skilled.ย  ย Maybe with TMac and Petty back in the backline, it becomes more contested and strong, less reliant on him contributing to that, so it doesn't show up so much in his game and he then has more time to deliver properly.ย  ย We won't know until they all play together.ย  Windsor also becomes a better player with those two back.ย  A strong suggestion by others is that Rivers needs to take Bowey's defence spot now that Langford will hold down a midfield place, Langdon has gone to the midfield and Sparrow is going well.ย  Especially when Kossie comes back.ย  That is 7 major midfielders.

A bit tough on Woe.ย  ย 25% GAME TIME for 9 possessions (same as for Pickett).ย  A full game would reach 36 possessions at that rate.ย  At least he is hard at the ball unlike some, and can use both feet.ย  One of the good things to come out of the second half.

Yes, is but not when it is used incorrectly.

"whence" means "from where" so "from whence" is a tautology. "From" in that instance was redundant.

So a triumvirate of words to help you sound really stuck up!!!

Whence, Hence and Thence ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Itโ€™s Woey.

ย

Is am optimistic about this season and the terrible conversion is not stymied that.ย

We are coming from a ways back in a number of areas - getting that many I50s and missed shots is a luxury frustration I will gladly put up with as we progress from where we were.

The tiresome sniping of depth players is as noxious as it is expected - beat the bell curve of fandom and realise that they do not matter - they are replacement players that donโ€™t dictate wins and losses (but jeez theyโ€™re good for excuses!)

Petracca, Oliver, May, Gawn, Lever, Viney, Rivers, Pickett, Fritsch, Langdon - these are the players that will dictate our fortunes.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithyโ€™s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and itโ€™s 1ยฝ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.ย
