Would anyone know when, where and what time the captains run (training session) for this game is. My daughter is very keen to make it.

Also if anyone has access to good tickets and not using then as a result of the Gran Prix; then we'd be interested in them. We = 7yr old bot, 15yr old girl and someone who can remember Jim Stynes and Neil Daniher playing footy!!!!

We are traveling from Canberra and trying to coordinate this with missing some school, limited accommodation options (gran prix), road trip with an easily bored youngster, plus a very passionate Dee's fan. So need to organise now, to try and make it work.

Hope you have booked already Ungarie. I decided to get tickets to the Pesidents lunch this year as we are taking our son to Melbourne to shop for his wedding suit and treat him to a game at the G. Thought round 1 was great solution for us and grabbed the expensive tickets in early January.  We then went to book flights and accommodation and thought prices were much higher than usual for our annual trip down. Then we found out the Grand Prix was on and felt a right wally. All our usual gotoos were unavailable or way over priced. Decided to power on though rather than trying to cancel the game tickets. We managed to get a 2 bdrm apartment on the MCG corner of the CBD, but when we look nowdays things are getting even more expensive, so book as early as you can if you haven't already. Also found good restaurants hard to get into (not surprising) but we have managed to secure a booking at Phillipe for the Saturday. We aren't used to eating at 5 o'clock (4pm for our qld body clocks) but it will still be great.

All up it would be cheaper to take him to Singapore but we are really looking forward to a great trip, informative lunch and hopefully a great game. Our last few trips down have been narrow losses.

P.S. I'm also keen to know details about the captains run training.

Thanks, sorting out final accommodation now.

If anyone could give an indication of when the captains run might start that would be very helpful. Our plan is to drive in from the Lakes Entrance that morning for it.

Also with the Grand Prix on at Albert Park for the game, has anyone any suggestions about parking. Is it likely to be taken up by F1 fans (walking across)?

Didn’t realise our first game of the year - against an interstate side we struggle to attract a crowd to - conveniently clashes with a huge global sporting event running in Melbourne.

Although F1 is on

I reckon we’ll get more against gws for round 1 than we would later in the year. More people are excited to be back to the footy and eager to go.
If we crack more than 30k it’s good for us

We'll definitely lose people (both in attendance and viewership) to the F1.

We're starting 20 minutes after the race starts too. Perhaps it may have been wiser to give us the 12:35pm slot for the armchair viewers. But i'm sure we'll put a respectable crowd.

I'm not attending either as I have a function that day - which is not ideal,

The Captain’s Run is usual at Gosch’s on the day before GameDay. I can’t imagine that’d change. It’s still four weeks away and I’m not sure if the training schedule is finalised yet. I have buddies in admin so as soon as I hear anything I’ll post in this thread. 👍🏽

At least there'll be other 'interesting' loud noises - and overhead activity? - around to distract us from the sounds and sights ground management normally bombards us with...

We got 42,000 when we played Sydney in 2023 (a great win ironically without Kozzie) on the GP Sunday. Probably about 2,500 - 5,000 less than hoped.

On that basis, I reckon the GWS game will go from 28,000 to 25,000.

We once got 37,000 to a GWS game at the G, but in that game we'd just made finals for the first time in years and the vibe around the club was a lot better than it is at the moment.

That 37,000 crowd was the last round of 2018, where we were in finals but also playing for a top 4 spot.
Next highest after that was round 1, 2016 (28,500).
All other games vs the Giants have been between 16,000 & 21,000 😟

From memory in 2018, Collingwood (as they usually do) spoilt the party for us. Had they lost to Freo on the Saturday and we beat GWS on the Sunday we would've made top 4.

Given the Pies won, we had to beat GWS to host an elimination final Vs Geelong, which we did. Had we lost we would've travelled to Sydney for our first finals win in donkey's years.

It was a special win over GWS and the vibe was electric at the time, with respect to being an MFC supporter in 2018. I'd argue just as much as 2021.

Spot on with the year and crowds. We don't draw well Vs GWS for obvious reasons.

I was planning to go to this game but a week ago it occured to me it is on at the same time as the GP. The GP is a once in a year event with 2 Aussies in the field and one with a big chance of winning. As a motor racing fan I will probably stay home and flick between channels to watch both. So the first home game of the season is out for me.

I was there that day. In the medallion club. I had an arrangement with the guy behind the bar. On my way to the toilet I would give him a wave. Beers would be ready for me on my way back to my seat. Thats how busy he was.

I can guarantee you I was not one of the 8000. I never go there. A soulless hole that you can only watch from the top deck.

We play West Coast there later in the year. We might be in a bit of danger in beating that crowd if we're no good by then and the fact that most MFC supporters hate going to Marvel.

They'll close the top deck for the Dees/Eagles game there as they'll want to create the impression on TV that people are actually there.

I was there, and I believe we won, I went out with 7999 others and had a kick on the ground after the game, I couldn't how rock hard the surface was.

They'll be closing most sections of the top deck at a lot of Melbourne Home games this year. Giants, Suns, Freo, North, Swans at the G, West Coast at Marel.

Yeah that makes sense given the closures started last year.

I'll miss having 6 bays to myself on the top level of the AFL members.

I still get a row to myself for those games on 2A in the AFL - Just sit in the Medallion Club area which is always empty.

I don't get the Marvel Stadium hostility (yes I go to plenty of Carlton home games there). I too prefer the MCG but Marvel is still a decent place to watch footy. Especially if it is bad weather. Its also great for accessing drinks/,food/bathrooms, better than the MCG in that aspect. Transport is easy too being next to Southern Cross Station. If you get say 30K+ you can get a pretty good atmosphere too.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
