Footy boss is running the core component of a business. The footy department soft cap and players salary cap both account for the biggest chunks of club expenses.

And that job has shifted to a much more managerial role over the last two decades. And since then the people doing those jobs have progressed to CEOs.

I don’t mind having a CEO with a different background. It just means Green has to have a big say as Footy Director at least during the transition.

And whilst the coach gets the headlines I think we need to really evaluate the role of the GM of footy.

I am concerned about a lack of AFL experience...it's not about dealing in FD matters but it is about working within an industry that is a bit of a closed shop.

The good news is at Chamber of commerce he’s been exposed to many of Melbourne’s big business people and has a media profile/connections.

Gill Mc was also long rumoured to join the RV board as Chairman before pulling out. Might be a connection there.

Given his parentage I'd have thought Schwab grew up a Tigers man.

He was in recruiting in his first stint with us. If I recall correctly some of his signings included Todd Viney, Earl Spalding and Warren Dean.

Perhaps he should have stuck to that

Not having a football background these days as the CEO is not a disadvantage as the role has changed. It is more commercial now, and the reality is CEOs carry out the board's direction and implementation of the agenda that the club sets, ie if the club wanted to sack a coach that would have to be done at the board level, not him alone, he must raise concerns and ideas to the board and it is up to them for approval or rejection.
The club has appointed him, and it is up to the club to support him in all areas till he gets a handle on all parts of the operation. Good luck to him on being appointed.

Cameron Schwab had three stints as CEO one at Richmond two at Dees so couldn’t have been a total write off.😳😳😁👍

He was also made their CEO at 24 y.o!

Honestly I have no idea if this is a good appointment and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

I don’t believe that you need to have a background in the game to be an AFL club CEO but I do think that the position of AFL club CEO is completely different to CEO of a corporation. You do need to have a grasp on the game, liaise with members whether that be in a forum like the AGM or down at the training track.

Sounds like they've picked a CEO for a specific purpose. He's a former director at Racing Victoria, Vic chamber of commerce etc.

Would have absolutely loved Nicholson I think he would have fit the bill perfectly but I wasn’t in charge of the brief so I don't know what they were looking for. Caulfield is clearly the priority so we’ve gone with someone in the know at least. It could be that this is a 3-4 year appointment.

Anyway I have no other opinion on this right now, I don’t feel bad and I don’t feel good. Hopefully it proves to be the right call.

Redleg you are the second person to completely misread my post. I was describing the KENNEDY COMMUNITY CENTRE in DINGLEY. I work in Malvern and catch a train to Caulfield station three days a week so know exactly where the racecourse is.
